2.5.5 - Download

Attention:

2.1 and up include an application designed to make changing settings easier, courtesy of our very own SoapyHamHocks. You can download this program here. Simply place it in the Windows 8 Steam skin folder and run it. This file could not be included due to deviantART's stance on uploading executables.

Enabling this skin causes steam to constantly use ~20% cpu. Any fix?

Thanks for the great update! :D

I'm probably blind, but I can't find anywhere to go to the downloads page? :p

You can find a link to Downloads in the dropdown arrow's menu in the search bar. I decided to adopt this style from the default theme.

Hmm, you're one of two people having this issue (unless you happen to be [GMT]S.Holmes on Steam as well). I'm not experiencing this problem myself and I haven't had any other reports of it either, so I'm not sure what to make of it yet.

I guess we can start with some basic troubleshooting:

  1. Is this the first version of the skin you're using? If so, be sure you've installed it to the skins folder and not the root directory. If you're upgrading, try deleting the skin's folder and re-downloading/installing it.
  2. What operating system are you running Steam on?

No, I'm not him.

1. No, I tried this skin once before. I always keep the friends tab open and noticed steam eating up cpu like crazy. I thought it was steam issue and iirc, opened a thread somewhere in steam forum about it. Later I found out the skin was the issue. Now I have tried this version after a long time (few months) but still same issue.

2. Windows 8 Pro (retail) with Media Center. fwiw, the only common things between the previous system and the current system are CPU (i7 3770K), RAM (16GB DDR3 @ 2400MHz) and GFX (580 GTX). Motherboard, drivers, OS, hdd etc all are different. Previously I was using W8DP or W8CP.

I do have dual/tri monitor though. Third monitor on Intel HD 4000.

It seems I still have the old one...I have put this one in w8 folder.

You're welcome. Enjoy!

Alright, I'm just making sure so I don't go through the same troubleshooting steps in two places.

The skin did cause CPU issues at one point early in development. I had gotten some reports and eventually figured out what was causing it and corrected it. Can you try deleting both versions and just downloading it fresh?

If the issue still occurs try the following: While monitoring your CPU usage start Steam but close any other windows (news updates, friends list, etc.).

Is your CPU usage high?

  1. If not, try opening the friends list, then another window or page you commonly have open until you notice something abnormal.
  2. If so, open the friends list but close the main window. Also try closing all of the windows while leaving the Steam process running.

Let me know what you find.

Previously friend list used to cause cpu spike. Right now only the library tab causes spike. Not store, not news/community, not server browser/friendliest etc.

Now it does not always spike in library. Only when you select certain games.

I have quite a few number of games. Let's categorize them in two: Installed (#1), Not-installed (#2).

Selecting #1 category games do not cause spike except Universe Sandbox.

Selecting #2 category games causes huge spike except a few games like AaAaAA!!! - A Reckless Disregard for Gravity where the spike is low but still not normal.

Make sure you've put the skin in "Steam/Skins/*Skin Name*", and not "Steam/Steam/Skins/*Skin Name*". I know this is rather basic but it's an easy mistake to me.

It was in the right place, don't know what the issue was, but I tried it just now, and steam (beta) updated, then I could use the skin. /shrug. Thanks, looks very slick.

That's an odd situation. I don't own either of those games but I'd imagine if it only happens with a couple it's something out of my control. Outside of changing the text size and the selected background color the list is mostly hard-coded.

Oh, well I'm glad it's working now. Enjoy it.

I have ~113 games. Only 26 installed. Almost all non-installed ones cause this issue if anyone of them are selected in library.

I have non-steam shortcuts added. All of them causes this issue.

After a bit of troubleshooting I'm beginning to notice a trend: Uninstalled games with no time stats are causing high CPU usage, while those that were previously played and have stats aren't.

I'm going to look into this. Thanks for the help, we're getting somewhere now!

Edit:

Fixed it!

Cool. Yes, I can confirm only items without timestat causes the issue. Let me redownload the skin (assuming the fixed version is up!).

:( where is the fixed version?!

Also, am I blind of the clickable button (link) to close steam overlay is missing?

Can you add a little indent in friends tab -> groups -> friend names?

I haven't uploaded it yet.

I removed the link.

That indent took up a lot of space space and just left less room for names, so I removed it.

Can you add that link somewhere else if that position looks bad? For example, a back button on top left. Would look cool!

Then make the offline text font/color much different from group name font/color please :)

I'd prefer the gray of "1 IN GAME, 4 ONLINE" for offline friends.

That's actually a really good idea! I'll see if it's possible.

Now that I can do. I usually have my list set to only show online friends so I hadn't realized how light that text was. Thanks for bringing it up.

    • Still using Classic Outlook? Microsoft highlights 15 reasons to switch to New Outlook by Usama Jawad As many of you may know, Microsoft has been trying to get customers to ditch Classic Outlook in favor of New Outlook for quite some time now. To that end, it has added numerous capabilities to the latter, including PST features, and it is working on several more, such as a unified inbox. However, customer response has been a bit lukewarm so far, with many considering the New Outlook to be "hot garbage". Now, Microsoft has highlighted 15 features that users can leverage in New Outlook in yet another attempt to get customers to migrate. Although not all of the 15 capabilities are exclusive to New Outlook, in fact, most of them are available in Classic Outlook as well. But Microsoft hopes that this combination of familiar and fresh features will be able to attract existing users as well as new ones. For ease of readability, we have summarized the 15 features below: Pin an email: This makes it easier to track important emails Snooze an email: You can temporarily snooze an email thread for a specific time frame until it becomes relevant again. This can be very useful in scenarios where you don't feel like actively following a thread or simply want to follow up on a later date Add multiple categories at the same time: You can assign multiple categories to an email through a single, simplified interface Sweep: As the name implies, you can define automated move processes on your inbox to declutter it, rather than cleaning it up manually Schedule send: Does exactly what it says on the tin, and can be useful when accommodating recipients in different timezones Simplified folder sharing: The sharing process has been simplified so permissions are automatically applied on parent folders Follow a meeting: This is an RSVP option that lets people know that you won't be able to join the meeting but would still like to access a recap Save calendar views: You can save different views for the calendar based on different workflows Improved meeting tracking: Organizers have more controls in viewing meeting responses, such as the ability to sort and download them. Typically useful when there is a large audience Meeting recap: The Outlook Calendar surfaces a meeting recap with recordings, transcripts, and shared files Filtered views: Allows you to declutter your Calendar so that it's easier to scan and schedule Change a recurring event: Users can modify future events of a series of meetings while preserving the configuration of previous ones Rename your email account: This labeling makes it easier to identify multiple accounts in Outlook Modern themes: Exactly what the name says, plus Dark Mode Keyboard shortcuts: This facilitates flexible user behavior as customers can choose between Outlook for Windows shortcuts, Outlook for the web, or turn them off completely There you have it. It's a decent list, but it remains to be seen if it will move the needle in a meaningful way for users who are attached to Classic Outlook. Again, a lot of the aforementioned features are already available in Outlook Classic, but for some, native functionality is not present, and people typically resort to workarounds. Microsoft will be hoping that it's primarily those capabilities that get people to finally switch.
