Hi guys,

I have a Windows live email account and I was wondering is there any program like the Windows Live Mail app which works on Mac? I setup Outlook which works ok but it doesn't work properly, it doesn't show like my folders I have created to sort out my emails like PayPal, Facebook etc. What email client is best to use on a Mac with Live Mail that can support this if there is any?

Are you on Lion? if so, Mail should definitively support Hotmail...

Yeah I am on Lion, and yeah Mail works but my point is how do I get it to download folders like on the Live Mail app in Windows as it only downloads my Inbox mail nothing from paypal, facebook etc folders i have setup to split my emails up. Not sure if this is possible if its like a feature microsoft only have in live mail app

It does....using POP3 :x

It's sad because there's no good way of using a native client with Hotmail on OSX

Oh well, so Microsofts fault really for limiting what Live Mail supports? and yeah it comes up as pop3 -.-

What about gmail? Might end up forwarding my mail to gmail or something

Live Mail doesn't support IMAP, which most of other email providers use to sync data.

The Live Mail Desktop App on windows uses a proprietary protocol called DeltaSync.

I'm not sure if DeltaSync works in outlook, but if you use your account through exchange, it might work.

My suggestion is that you forward your hotmail email account emails to a gmail account and then use Mail, Outlook or Sparrow on OS X to download emails from your gmail account.

This way all your folders here will be synchronized too.

Funny...Outlook 2011 will only do Mail syncing with Hotmail, but won't sync with the calendar or contacts.

Meanwhile, GMail will sync mail, contacts, and calendars with Outlook 2011 (or iCal, Contacts, and Mail stock OS X apps). Hmmm... looks like I won't be switching to Hotmail or Windows Live Mail anytime soon.

I have Outlook with my Office for MAC Student and I tried it out and it isn't great at all, i found pages of emails still on my live web view it wasn't syncing very well and its still pop3

Does Hotmail support forwarding? If you forward all of your mail to a gmail account, use IMAP, and then setup so that your sent email was from your @live account you could have an OK setup... that is if you didn't want to drop your current email address. Otherwise, I'm not sure there is a good solution for you.

It sucks, but I blame Microsoft on this one. They aren't keeping up with the competition and their almost yearly redesigns of Hotmail really have just repositioned advertisements and not brought anything useful to the table in terms of features. For it to be 2012 and Hotmail still not supporting IMAP is just.... is just.... well I'm just speechless there. POP3 was the bomb back in the day...as in the 90's.

How are these not options, relevant, off topic or trolling? You better back yourself up here. My post was 100% factual for the best options.

He asked for programs which are similar to the Windows Live applications in Windows. Hotmail.com/gmail.com are websites which don't offer the full experience he is looking for. Most of my comment was towards moving to gmail.com. Some people can't simply change their e-mail address because it is a "better service" (even if it actually is).

I could have recommended Wine/Parallels/VMWare but I felt that it was just as off topic. He wants a native application/interface.

Gmail is more than www.gmail.com, it is IMAP, POP, Mobile ActiveSync and more, It can also be a POP client to fetch mail from other non-Gmail accounts, and Send Mail as... using SMTP servers of non-Gmail accounts to keep the email address from another provider but use Gmail as a mail store supporting all these protocols. You can even use Windows Live Mail on Windows to seamlessly access Gmail as you do Hotmail, as you can with Outlook for Mac or Apple Mail all while keeping your Hotmail Email address that you use to send/receive. Gmail is be best system because of it's power, and it's no reason to flame due to your lack of knowledge about it.

Also he did not mention that it needs to be native, so your options are valid too. hotmail.com provides a pretty similar interface to Windows Live client, he didn't say what requirements he has except that he is looking for something similar to Windows Live Mail which works on the Mac.

SuperKid, what you need is mbox it make it so you can use IMAP instead of pop3 to sync hotmail with mac (folders included)

it works with outlook (though a little buggy on syncing the mail in the folders), but it works perfectly with the default mac mail app

I use this app and have been very happy with it, completely worth the $20 I'd say, I don't know why it's not more widely known

(I would have recommended this sooner but I didn't see this thread till today)

I've actually tried the feature you mentioned (imap/pop) and hated it, but that's more of a personal preference. There is no "lack of knowledge," I just don't enjoy the way Gmail works. I use Windows Live 2011 on a VMware windows 7 daily because I find hotmail.com does not provide the same speed/functionality.

You're right: Gmail's paradigm doesn't work perfectly with a standard IMAP client, but I think it works beautifully with Sparrow.

      The flaw with this analysis is that this laptop has a cellphone CPU in it. In the Intel world, that would be an N150 and those are everywhere, even in low end laptops. You can get an N150 based NUC with 16GB RAM and 256GB-512GB SSD... NOT soldered in... for < $500 Canadian (around US$360). The problem is two fold: tech bloggers/writers on most tech site (like this one, ironically) overvalue Apple and apparently aren't in the same earnings class as most regular people. As a result, we get breathless articles about how everyone needs a folding phone when most people just cannot afford one... or really need one. And we get Apple used as the baseline metric regardless of whether that comparison makes any sense. If Dell or HP released a retail laptop with a cellphone motherboard, you'd be all over them for doing that - but Apple does it and it's genius. I see articles suggesting what Samsung - a company that basically started the foldable phone market and has built them for eight years - needs to do to compete with Apple's unreleased, unspecced and unseen folding phone. Sorry, no - if the Neo (really creative name there BTW - still, better than the Go, the other "creative" product name everyone's using) encourages PC makers to make cellphone laptops using lower end ARM processors, we all lose. It's a step backwards and a capitulation to the fact that semiconductor makers and computer OEMs (and tech bloggers) have totally lost the plot.
