Best Usenet Client

Question

Hey Guys,

I currently use Unison as my primary News Browser on my iMac, but when I want to download an NZB, I generally leave it to SabNZBd sitting on my File Server. Both of these pieces of software are GREAT at what they do. Sab outdoes Unison with NZB, PAR & RAR tasks, but Unison outdoes Sab in-that it can actually browse Usenet and 'Quicklook' at binaries without requiring Downloads to the Local File System.

That said, I've recently setup an ESXi Server at home and am looking for a News Browser for Windows and have yet to be able to find anything that comes even close to Unison.

Was just wondering if you guys had any ideas and also curious as to what the average Neowiner uses as their primary Usenet Client.

Thanks

Chris

Unfortunately I can't offer too much advice on this as I do all my Usenet downloading on a Windows 7 based machine at home using SABnzbd - which is absolutely great!!! (I used to use GrabIt but found it too buggy as it was a beta application and hasn't been updated in a while now).

Perhaps you can check out this website for some alternatives:?

I don't know whether it will work with anything but UseNEXT, but Tangysoft's client is excellent.

Just checked, it's a product that's licensed to the Usenet providers.

Check with your provider whether they offer Tangysoft's client.

It's incredibly good! (albeit sometime a little unstable... Possibly not the best choice for an unmonitored server)

Cool, good luck with that then!

Feel free to try GrabIt if you are searching for a Windows based application, as it only runs on the Windows platform and does include a 'Browse' function. I was using it for a while but then switched to SABnzbd and haven't looked back since ;)

There is a new GrabIt beta version 2.0 coming out shortly that you can sign up for here if you like:

My god, I thought Grabit was long dead. Apparently not lol

I use Newsleecher on Windows, I feel it's the best client currently.

Pan is primary a linux usenet reader. For windows, I'd suggest you try xnews -not a linux app even thou the name suggests so- or newsleecher if you want a search alternative function to XPAT search.

However if you're just wanting a bog standard binary downloader that does par2, unrar etc and such, then there is grabit and my personal fav, unzbin (utorrent interface)

I actually love the web interface of SABnzbd as it is clean and fast. GrabIt seemed just far too buggy at times for my liking!

Yes I also use Astraweb as my Usenet provider and download via their SSL server connection.

I have heard that Giganews is also quite good and you get online storage and a VPN service bundled with your account also :)

    • There is a lot of reasons not to use Edge but faster fixes and security updates is not one of them.
    • Can't reproduce. I installed Edge, went to neowin.net > accepted the cookie consent > used menu to go to forums, everything loads and I can browse around the forums. If you can't interact with the dialog on the forums for some reason, go to the main site and accept the cookie consent there? It is true that the site will not function properly until the cookie consent is accepted or rejected,. it's a legal requirement and I also know that certain VPN/ad blockers block it, which is a user related issue and not a neowin.net problem.   This is not our cookie consent dialog. Gotta love browser hijacking... /s Edit: this may be what Californians see, I will confirm with our consent provider.
