Best Usenet Client

Hey Guys,

I currently use Unison as my primary News Browser on my iMac, but when I want to download an NZB, I generally leave it to SabNZBd sitting on my File Server. Both of these pieces of software are GREAT at what they do. Sab outdoes Unison with NZB, PAR & RAR tasks, but Unison outdoes Sab in-that it can actually browse Usenet and 'Quicklook' at binaries without requiring Downloads to the Local File System.

That said, I've recently setup an ESXi Server at home and am looking for a News Browser for Windows and have yet to be able to find anything that comes even close to Unison.

Was just wondering if you guys had any ideas and also curious as to what the average Neowiner uses as their primary Usenet Client.

Yes I also use Astraweb as my Usenet provider and download via their SSL server connection.

I have heard that Giganews is also quite good and you get online storage and a VPN service bundled with your account also :)

Yes that is quite correct. Their service is good but they're one of the most DMCA'd host so I would recommend looking elsewhere.

I am assuming that you are talking about Giganews as I was just making another suggestion for the benefit of others, as my primary is still Astraweb which has served me well!

No mentions of Newsbin Pro yet? OK... http://www.newsbin.com/ Been using it for years and love it enough to have actually paid for it. Great for downloading stuff with my Astraweb account, automatically handles RARs too which is handy. It's also very regularly updated, and it's easy to get hold of the developer on their forums too.

NewsBin is crap when compared to SabNZBd mate. I switch from NewsBin to SabNZBd. A lot of people switch from GrabIt/NewsBin to SabNZBd. It's worth it.

I tried it, hated the web interface.. switched back to grabit. Would rather see the parts download, and not have to upload my download to open the nzb.

You can tell Sabnzbd to monitor a folder for nzb files. If your browser is set to save files to your desktop, then you can set it to there.

There is also the nzbdstatus addon for Firefox.

Also, if SABnzbd is set as the default program to open .nzb files, then why not just choose to open the file directly from your browser (if you are downloading from a website and not using a news reader...) so that it launches SABnzbd; rather than saving it locally and then uploading the .nzb file for download??

I, personally (as well as a lot of others on here), swear by SABnzbd!

I didn't know I could open them with the sabnzb program, I thought it all had to be done through the web interface. I also didn't know I could click on the download to see the parts. I'd personally prefer it if it were a standalone program instead of web-driven though. Just out of personal preference.

Ya i'm surprised Newsbin wasn't mentioned sooner. I have the same configuration as well as I pay for newsbins search, it's fantastic!

Ah mate, you need to try it again. The first time I tried it, I hated it and went straight back to GrabIt/NewsBin. Gave it another chance shortly after that and it turned out I was the problem not the program.

You can set it to run as a service, so it'll boot up with Windows (or even install it as a service on your WHS/NAS box). You can set it to 'watch' a folder and whenever a .NZB file appears in there it will automatically get added to the download queue. Not to mention that it has built in auto-repair, auto-unrar, auto-unzip and a crap load of other features. One of my favourite things is because it's web based, you can access it from anywhere (if you set it all up correctly). So I can be out and about and check on my downloads. Or I can add something remotely to the download queue.

Well, the general consensus is for raw NZB Downloading - sabNZBd is the best.

And for Browsing - Newsleecher.

I'm going to setup Newsleecher on a separate VM on my ESXi Server to test out. I'm also going to checkout AltBinz

Great little addon. I don't use it for monitoring at all, it simply automates the adding of LEGAL FILES to my SABNZBD server from a bunch of different sites.

There are a couple of similar things out there, but this one seems to be bestest.

Also: Sickbeard with API support is where it is at. Remember boys and girls, pirates are bad.. (NINJAS RULE!) (Totes not troll bait >.>)

for the mac i use Nzbvortex, for windows there's a good free one : sabnzbd plus, simple http interface, works very well, good luck :)

I like grabit, like the dude before I like the physical application. I don't like the fact that sabNZBd has to have a browser to work.

I've switched to Sabnzbd which is pretty neat and unrars and puts everything into their own folders but the only thing I don't like about it is its lack of GUI and use of a web UI so I occasionally switch over to Newsleecher to stay sane.
