No, that guy should be offended and take it personally.

Being romantic is nice. So long as you don't make it cheesy. I love romancing my girlfriend, her reactions show me more love than most guys will ever feel.

Didn't say it's a one-size-fits-all way to be romantic.

He actually got pretty prejudicing by implying it's no more than meaningless tradition.

I beg to differ lol.

old fashioned != wrong

I'm sure you're doing lots of old fashioned things yourself.

Change for the sake of change?

It works without flowers, so why bother?

...

I don't mean to offend you, so read my words lightly and don't take the personal, but really: nothing's bad about being romantic.

You may disagree, but there are enough people who like it and don't embrace it for the sake of tradition, but because they agree with them, the tradition being no factor, but a state of what they like, not a denominator if you will.

SO many things are old fashioned, remember this. (Y)

how is a damn rock romantic? the only reason we have them is because a company wanted to make money. so they started pushing the idea that you "needed" a ring

After 10 years together there really shouldn't be any such thing as "your" money as all your finances are shared.

Personally I think marriage is old-fashioned but I don't think it's a big deal if you share the cost of the ring. At the end of the day it's just an overpriced trinket and you're going to face numerous other overpriced expenses leading up to your wedding.

Personally I think marriage is old-fashioned...

Out of interest, why do you think it is old fashioned?

While I can appreciate people get divorced to be "fashionable" these days, the majority of people who get divorced just make bad choices. Sorry but I don't want to marry someone who makes bad choices. For me marriage shows a life-long commitment and unity. If you're not married then you're still just boyfriend and girlfriend where either one could just walk away at any point.

I don't understand people who don't want to get married these days. All it shows me is a fear of commitment and a lust for that chance to walk away easier.

it does not show fear of commitment. walk away easier? right... because so many marriages last anyways.

If 2 people are good for each other, they will stay that way, regardless of getting married or not. Gay people seem to do fine without it.

I'm one of those guys who doesn't "believe" that marriage is needed. To me, while marriage has meaning to some to show "ownership" or "coupling" , it is an outdated method. It was used a long time ago, to decide how land and other items would be divided. It is no longer for that, and now, doesn't even mean a life long promise. Marriage has lost all value and meaning/purpose.... But one of these days, I'm going to make my girl happy and still go through with it.

I hope you don't get divorced :D

Ya, one of the reasons for the tat is to make it more of an effort for that to happen. Hopefully something will seem more important when it is actually permanent. Of course, I'm also making marriage wait till I know that it will be something that will work. Girlfriend has been ready for a year now... getting ansy over me making her wait a few more :p

Man to man, buy the ring from your own money! ;)

It'll have much more meaning that way.

It really won't, and if she wants it to be bought from the shared account, it might actually offend her and mean less as he didn't listen to her.

Sorry but love, commitment and marriage isn't about throwing money at her.

Dude you should be leading her on with the BS that its going to come from a joint account and before she has chance to go out with you and get it, you suprise her with it. Payed for out your own pocket a week before and blow her out the water!!

For the sake of your masculinity dont "joint" purchase it.

Ofc it isnt but as the man your honor bound to be the one who asks for her hand in marriage and it shouldnt be pre-planned to a date, if it is only you should know.

If there truely in love she wont be offended ffs.

If there was any sign of "money = love" then they shouldnt be getting engaged or married. They been together 10yrs, so I think as the MAN he should be chivalrous and buy the ring himself.

I view an engagement ring as a present that you are buying someone to show how much you love them. Having her pay for part of it takes the meaning out of that in my opinion. I would just start setting money aside from your checks to keep in your personal checking (not the joint one) so when you buy the ring, you paid for all of it and she won't know how much you spent.

After 10 years you should be long past the his and hers money anyway, and even if he takes it from his account, it's still their money. it's irrelevant, and if she says she wants it to be paid from shared resources, it should be respected, it's not about being chivalrous, she might not even want that, some women actually live in the 21st century and could be offended at it, especially when they said they want it to be paid from the shared amount specifically.

and if you think a women in love can't be offended, you're sorely mistaken or just don't know women.

Once your married it will continue on this trend. When her birthday or anniversary comes up and you buy her a gift you will buy it with the joint account so why not the ring. People make too big a deal over something so petty. Unless shes only marrying you cause you can buy her things then it shouldn't matter who pays for what.
