Looks like software to me.

Try dialling ##634# and run the diagnostic tests, that should tell you if it's a hardware or software issue.

On the basis that the lumia 800 has no physical buttons and his touchscreen seems to be out of order, I'm sure not sure that's the best advice.

Well, it's worth a try as it could just be the app that has issues.
