Draytek VPN Router. I wouldn't trade it for anything. The best piece of networking equipment I've ever used, and I've tried a lot of them. I forget who on here recommended Draytek, but I thank god they did. lol

pfsense 2.1, VM on N40L (updated to 8GB, 2nd nic added) using vsphere 5 (esxi)

HAHAHA, I always get a kick out of your specs. I don't even know what they mean, I just know they're bad ***... LMAO

Running pfsense http://www.pfsense.org/ 2.1 is current development release in a virtual machine

2.1-BETA0 (i386)

built on Fri Jul 27 15:20:57 EDT 2012

FreeBSD 8.3-RELEASE-p3

VM - virtual machine. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_machine

N40L - is a HP microsever, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16859107052 Got it lot cheaper than that current price. Updated its 2GB of ram it came with to 8GB, and also added a 2nd nic (it only has one built in). This was so could use router on VM, one interface connected to modem, second interface connected to my lan. This is done via virtual switches that you assign physical nics too.

Vsphere 5 - just then new name for ESXI, 5 is the current version - running 5.0.0 u1 (build 768111)

This allows me to take snapshots of my router before upgrade - easy rollback if something goes wrong, switch routers to something else on the fly, say different build of pfsense, or ipcop, m0n0wall, smoothwall, generic linux as router, etc. etc. Many Many advantages of running your router in VM.

Also allows me to reduce power consumption, less hardware - just one tiny box (n40l) and run my router and all my other VMs without having to have multiple boxes. Other VMs on the box act as my NAS, my linux shells, my test workstation OSes, Test Server OSes, etc. etc.

Hope that helps clear it up.

Opposite of what I've experienced! My Netgear has lasted me 6 years and the worst was the Linksys. My Linksys only lasted a week! Took it back for the Netgear 6 years ago!

My old Netgear RT314 from 1997 is still kicking. Just using it a a RIP router at this point though.

Also picked up 2 WNR3500L routers from Newegg (refurbed) to serve as range extenders :)

My vote was Cisco but I am actually gonna go to use pfsense too when I get my ALIX board. (Surely your help will be needed ButMan) :p

Well if your going to call me names?? ;) I'm not so sure I would be up for helping

Sorry man, didn't even realize I spelled it wrong. My apologies BudMan.

I just got the AMPED WIRELESS!!! AP20000G access point and it really does have HARDCORE COVERAAAGGEE!!!!!

175ft away I can stream an HD Youtube vid with not much buffering!!! way more then my netgear!!!

it's been awesome and setup was very easy. I love it!

dual band! USB STORAGE! 4 guest network per channel! (all named after ponies!) and lots more!!!!!

I have a Linksys Wireless-N 400 dual-band. In and of itself it was the ********* router ever along with all the other crappy Linksys routers I've owned.

Then I installed DD-WRT on it and that thing is rock friggen solid now. It's amazing to login and see up-times pushing 90 days. With the default firmware I had constant reboots, and conflicting ip addresses on the network. DD-WRT FTW.

    • Limited Prime Day deal sees Amazon Echo Show 11 is at its lowest price yet by Ivan Jenic The Amazon Echo Show 11 is currently $149.99 on Amazon during Prime Day, down from $219.99. That's 32% off and $70 saved on Amazon's newest mid-size smart display (purchase link below). As its name suggests, the Echo Show 11 features a 11” Full-HD touchscreen, which is a decent upgrade over the Echo Show 8. It offers 60% more viewing area, which makes a genuine difference for recipes, calendars, video calls, or any other scenario where the smaller display can feel a bit cramped. The Show 11 is built around Alexa+, Amazon's more capable AI assistant that can handle natural conversation. You can make reservations, order groceries, and find content based on your preferences, instead of always having to give it precise commands. There’s also the Omnisense technology, which adds ambient awareness, allowing the device to trigger routines based on temperature, presence detection, or visual cues. Smart home control is built in without needing a separate hub, and the home screen doubles as a photo slideshow when not in use. Taking all of this into account, the Show 11 is a perfect smart addition to your kitchen counter or living room. At $149.99, this is a strong Prime Day buy for anyone already in the Amazon ecosystem or looking to build one out.
