Game Boredom

Recommended Posts

How quickly to you get bored of a game? I find myself hardly ever finishing a game no matter the style rather quickly. I have yet to finish an entire game outside of a few rpg's. It's not that they get too hard but more of the same thing over and over after awhile. Maybe I'm just outgrowing this stuff.

Same. I am bored now trying to find something to play. I have been trying a bunch of F2P MMo's but nothing, but yeah I have played most of the big AAA titles, not just MMO's but FPS games and such and NEVER finish them. 99% of the time I just play a day or 2 in single player, get bored and jump right in Multiplayer mode.

Yeah sounds like you're getting fed up with gaming or just not found the right game to play or you just prefer the shorter games.

Me personally while i may not have the time to play games like i did when i was younger, i still enjoy the games and play and finish the majority of them. I find Minecraft and A Valley Without Wind taking up most of my gaming time lately.

I'm playing Legends of Grimrock right now and I'm already pretty bored with it. Gave up on Skyrim about a month ago although I may go back to it at some point. Clash of heroes is another that I'm just bored of. Batman, Dagger Dale abd a few others. Not a big fan of MMO type or FPS as I tend to enjoy single player games. All in all I am a little excited to play Diablo but not crazy about it being a "always connected" based game. I did enjoy the Serious Sam games and did finish them. Looking forward to the new one but all in all, nothing keeps my interest.

Same as you really. Most recent games are too easy (Demon Souls / Dark Souls excluded :p), so unless they have particularly enjoyable gameplay or a decent story I quickly get bored / lose interest. Probably only finish about 15-20% of games I start.

I get bored quickly. Minecraft WAS GREAT, one week later I couldn't play it because it bored me.

Terraria was GREAT! 3 days later I couldn't play because it bored me. :/.

I get bored of coding easily too which is why it takes ages for things to get done on the site I'm coding...

I too find some newer games boring for actually having too much to do. Like Skyrim, it seems odd, but the massive size of the world I am daunted or bored of having to explore.

I have actually returned to playing my old games, like SWAT3 / MoH:AA / HL2 because they tend to be mid-length or stand-alone missions and levels. The modern CoD / MoH titles are too forced and I can't take my time mucking around taking pot-shots at people, however epic some of the staged battles may well be I don't find much replay in them.

Skyrim is definitely fun. There's so much content it can be intimidating at first If you've never played an elder scrolls game before. And graphically, it's just stunning. Turn the settings to the max and enjoy the scenery while you explore the northern province of Tamriel.

Good post. I've ran into getting bored on games allot. I'll switch back and forth between games and it might takes months before I finish. I have to finish a game before I can buy a new one. Right now I'm getting a bit edgy as Commander Shepard going up and down the elevator on the Normandy trying to find people to engage in conversations with and then jetting off to some world to gain alliances with aliens to fight the Reapers. I've been to the Purgatory bar so many times to have shots and dance with the crazy chick up on the rail hoping that would take the edge off but it just makes things worse. Its an awesome game but I just want to kick some Reaper butt and get it over with.

I've discovered as I got older, games didn't capture me anymore. As a kid up to probably age 13, I got sucked into the game worlds and never got bored. Now, I have probably 20+ games on the backlog. Some of them are really good, too, but they just can't keep my attention for whatever reason. I think my imagination is fading. There are still some exceptions to this rule, though. For example, I played Chrono Trigger all the way through for the first time about a year ago and actually finished without getting bored. But that's one game out of hundreds.

It's not just age, low attention span is a side product of modern media. Back when I owned a SNES I had 5-6 games at a time and I traded them in as I completed them to fund more, on my PC now I have well over 30 games and a backlog of films that need watching, TV series to catch up on, websites to read...

The success of short and focused indie games on mobile devices sums it up pretty well.

So do we think its just because we are getting older? Or do you think its because games are really changing and are getting so dumbed down now a days that its just not holding our attention anymore? Or is it something else?

I've been gaming for years and I lived for the next release of a game. Seriously how many of us have bought new computers upgraded our video cards just to prepare for a new game coming out. I remember before Half Life 2 came out how jacked up I was and I bought a new PC with turbo charged whatever in it. I wasn't disappointed either. I think we have gotten spoiled with games and how incredible graphics are nowadays. Story lines and keeping interested has been more difficult. Predictability has taken over. The on-line gaming communities have taken over.

Tbf I still play the original C&C, syndicate and syndicate wars, super mario world (and numerous hacks) for the SNES, loads of atari games like deuterous and whatnot, and they're awesome.

Minecraft and terraria just fill in some time, they're not 'fun' tbf.

I'd like a game that is actually fun and each level is something completely different (as in, not just different objectives but a whole different game per-say). But no-one would make a game like that, you'd need 10+ engines! Hah

I feel this way. The only game I play any more is Team Fortress 2. I think for me I'm bored of Single Player games.

I really loved Mass Effect 2 for me it was the game of the year. I anticipated Mass Effect 3 so much. Then I finally played it and I got bored about an hour in and haven't touched it since. Maybe I'm just growing out of games I don't know.

I'm having difficulty learning new complex games like RPGs or strategy games. I'm a programmer so I figure **** out for a living, when I get to play I don't want to be figuring **** out, I want to be having fun. So the only complex games I play are those I learned back when I was utterly fascinated with games, i.e. 10 years ago. I can still get sucked into a game of Settlers 2 for hours, but I don't want to learn how to play the latest installment in the series.

I feel kinda bad about not having learned how to play Civ 4 or 5, or The Witcher 2, but my brain won't let me.

I don't think games are dumbed down in general (a lot of games back then were very dumb), I think we just no longer put enough value in learning how to play them to justify the effort. For whatever personal reason, everyone is different.

The last game I really got any thrill out of was dungeon defenders and I played it with my hubby, sis, and lil bro a couple months ago....

and skyrim was awesome, but not as mind blowingly perfect as I anticipated... Plus it was buggy as hell. :-(

I'm kinda bored with games.... I only mess around in minecraft once in a while but that's about it....

Happens to me a decent amount as well these days, for me I do not think it is because I am getting older, although it does play a small role, but as others have already mentioned, it is the predictability of these damn games these days. Nothing is new after the first couple of hours, that is why I have gone on record lately saying I actually prefer SP experiences that are under 10 hours, as I think they usually tend to do it right. And I prefer SP experiences myself. So I think it is a combination of developers feeling as if they need to make a game longer then it needs to be, and some games just shooting their nut so to speak way to early on, and the rest of the game is just retreading what has already been done.

But there are of course exceptions. I am currently playing Rayman Origins on my Vita, and will definitely beat it one day, and that is as repetitive as a game can get pretty much from the perspective it is the same gameplay more or less throughout (new abilities are unlocked as you progress), but the gameplay is so enjoyable to me, and the level design is done so well, I enjoy playing it, even if it is the same experience more or less.

So yeah, after writing that last paragraph, maybe from so many years of playing games, right now I feel like I have seen it all so to speak. So unless a game is done really, really well, which for me just needs to be fun or original gameplay, then I do lose interest much faster then I used to.

Off topic I know, but what is with Bethesda? Fallout 3 was buggy as hell... New Vegas was buggy as hell... Skyrim seems to be buggy as hell... Why can't they lower the crash bugs in years of development? :|

    • Well I've done a grand total of nothing, and it now clocks between 2010mhz and 1995mhz (stock is 1710mhz) and hovers around 80c, warmer than it used to, but tolerable clocks seem to have returned. Thanks for all the advice on this thread. Will review the evidence and make a choice.

    • I really wonder if this has to do with the built in VPN or "private DNS" of browsers that trip up legal requirements like cookie consent and Cloudflare (to avoid all the botnet attacks we get). And BTW some botnets still manage to get past Cloudflare, we are constantly having to tweak it to block malicious traffic that ultimately cause a DDoS.
