OS X Grey Screen error, possible hard drive issue?

Recommended Posts

I have a MacBook pro bought last summer with 10.6.8 on it

Been having a weird issue as of late.

Randomly while working on an given task, I get a slight freeze or lag, spinning beach ball and a weird hard driving click. Then it stops. all my tasks I tried completing catch up

Followed by a dialog that comes up with what looks like an applescript logo and "the command terminated due to receipt of a signal"

Whats odd is that this isn't frequent, I might go a few hours with this happening or up to a week.

Now today I boot up the MBP I hear a slight click and get a grey screen, I saved the code below, but rebooted and it was fine. Any ideas on this, Im wondering if something is up with the factory HDD? Wanted to get some opinions before I might take take it to Apple

You can have mechanical failure in the drive and smart doesn't know anything about it.

Back when I worked in IT I ran into more-than-a-few Seagate drives that reported "no issues" with the Seagate SeaTools+smart yet they got stuck reading certain areas of the disk (with the infamous clicking sound).

Also had the same issues with my older MBP from 2007 and a Hitachi drive in it - system slowed down more and more and eventually click.. click.. usually it would give IO Error and recover but eventually it would simply choke on it. Switched to SSD, couldn't be happier.

I ran a few HDD tests, like smart and everything checks out so far

Your drive can be shot to pieces with Disk Utility still saying everything's just fine. I experienced exactly this with my previous iMac: At one point it took over ten minutes to get to the login screen and another six to load the desktop. It took the better part of the day to copy all the files to my external drive over FireWire 800(!). Turned out to be a faulty HDD. It got replaced and everything worked the way it should again.

I'd say your HDD is broken as well.

Sounds for sure like the drive is failing. Had a western digital in a MBP 13inch fail like this. I was able to plug it into my hackintosh and copy off the user folder. Using a program call "HDD Regenerator" in windows I was able to "repair the bad sectors" and actually cloned the drive entire for the user. YMMV, but you definitely are going to want to replace the drive.

Yes Sir, get it to Apple ASAP.

Edit: You should prolly also let them know that "in your opinion it's unacceptable that a high price point machine has defective components that fail in under 12 months that should last years!" and that you should somehow be compensated for the time and effort you have to take to get it replaced.

Last time I tried that on them, I got a gift card ;-)

    • That's not what I meant:) I like the tabs being above the URL bar, but previously the tab selection started from the top of the screen (y=0). So I could just quickly push my mouse up and done. Now I have to actually aim it just slightly below the top, because the tab is now a few pixels below the top. In other words, previously I only had to aim with my mouse horizontally, now I have to both vertically and horizontally. Super annoying.
