weird problem with MS word.

Question

hey, I am having this frustrating problem with MS word and can't seem to find the right answer.

if I click in the middle of a word and delete a few letters using the delete key, and then use the backspace key to delete a few more letters, everything is fine.

if I delete an entire word with the delete key and then try to use the backspace key, it won't work. I don't know why... I dont' remember having this problem with previous version of MS word and don't have the problem with onenote or any other program... I assume there is an annoying setting somewhere but can't find it.

any ideas?

What version of Word are you using? I've just tried with Microsoft Word 2007 and haven't been able to recreate your error. I also can't see any particular option that would give you this problem. Does this just happen in Word, or are other programs affected as well?

I can't seem to replicate this in MS Word 2010 32-bit either and have never come across this issue myself...

Can you confirm what version of MS Office you are using please?

Have you tried Repairing your MS Office installation?

If that does not work, perhaps try updating to MS Office 2010 SP1; assuming that's what you are using (if not, MS Office 2007 is at SP2 and MS Office 2003 is at SP3 currently). Make sure you download the right version of the update for the version of MS Office 2010 that is installed on your system; i.e. 32-bit or 64-bit (go to File>Help to display the Version details). Download links for both versions are on this page: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2460049

I have all the updates and am using office 2010. The installation seems to be fine.

I just confirmed that it only happens to some documents! I opened a new word document just now and tried to replicate this but couldn't!! If I open any of my papers, I get this same odd behavior...

I write pieces of my papers in onenote and paste them into word for final editing. I use the table of contents and bibliography features of word... those are the things my documents have in common with each other.

Hmm definitely is an 'odd' problem...

Maybe you have an MS Word add-in (COM) that is causing the issue? Try disabling all COM add-ins for Word or just ones that you don't use. Does the issue still occur?

Why don't you just use the Backspace key ALL the time /s

As a side note, I found an odd issue myself on a user's laptop that had Google Chrome installed and also the Skype plugin for web browsers. When Google Chrome was open and had the Skype plugin enabled, she could not paste text with the formatting options in MS Office 2010 apps, it would only allow the plain text to be pasted and the Merge or Keep source formatting option was not visible. This issue went away after I disabled the Skype plugin in Chrome! Turns out that she wanted to use IE instead so I uninstalled both Chrome and the Skype plugin. Maybe this is related to your issue...just throwing it out there!

    • I really wonder if this has to do with the built in VPN or "private DNS" of browsers that trip up legal requirements like cookie consent and Cloudflare (to avoid all the botnet attacks we get). And BTW some botnets still manage to get past Cloudflare, we are constantly having to tweak it to block malicious traffic that ultimately cause a DDoS.
    • CPPC states can also be messed around with in most UEFI settings but aren't as robust as the ones that the Windows Scheduler can provide! Make sure you look into what your motherboard also has before customizing for the Windows Scheduler.
