New Macbook Pro 2012 (Core i5 2nd Gen) not booting after failed file transf

Recommended Posts

Guys I need your help. My dad recently purchased a Macbook pro 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5 2nd Gen.

When booted for the first time, I tried with him, transferring the data using the Migration Assistant. Due to crappy Internet speed, it failed miserably to transfer the 100GB+ he had stored. Nonetheless, it mysteriously created an account with Administer Privileges on it from the old PC (don?t ask me why).

Now, when I try transferring it with a Hard Drive the computer crashes, bringing start to the apocalypse.

The computer now DOES NOT BOOT UP, not even in SAFE MODE, and a Blocking Sign is displayed in exchange of the Apple logo. For killer, the new MacBooks, which I don't know why, do not bring the OS disc or a DVD recovery unit which I can grab a copy of it.

I?m asking you what to do next. I need some help since I don?t surf in this mac waters. With Windows I would have booted onto the recovery utility bundled with the OS and do some magic tricks, or use the recovery partition of the OS. What could be the equivalent in Mac?

Thanks a lot guys for the help

P.S: Mac OS X Lion

First of all, Migration Assistant doesnt use internet... it uses ethernet/usb/firewire/thunderbolt to ethernet/usb/firewire/thunderbolt.

Second, if migrating from a PC, it WILL create a new user, if you read the migration assitant it would tell you. Its not like its a bad thing.

Third, the recovery is Command + R when your booting up your macbook. The Stop sign means a corrupt hard drive. So system files were being moved around or something and when the process of migration assistant died, it killed the boot up.

So now, you want to COMMAND + R, hold it down and hit the power button, continue to hold it down till you see it boot into recovery. If you cant do that, hold down option and boot the computer, itll load of all the partitions of the hard drive. One of them will be "Lion Recovery". Done....

Fuq It has a failing hard drive.

"This drive has a hardware problem that can't be repaired"

Back up as much of the data as possible and replace the disk. See an authorized Apple dealer for more information"

S.M.A.R.T. Status : Failing.

It's 3 days old  and I don't live on the U.S.... better go to a representative now...

Edit: thanks Sikh and Jerid for the help....

I had a feeling that was the case but I didnt wanna say so.

When and how did you dad get it? If it was new or refurbished(from apple) then contact them asap. Apple's really good about just giving you a brand new computer instead of installing a new drive.

Also, I know you know, but I just wanna stress that failing hard drive does not mean its apple's fault. I see failing hard drives very rarely out of the box for any computer.

Yep a failing hard drive is not Apples fault, nor is it the fault of any computer manufacture. What is their fault is if they handle the support poorly. Hard drives are most likely to die when they are new and within the 1st 30 days. Which is why it is VERY important to keep good backup (like you should be doing anyway) when using a new hard drive.

Not only what warwagon said but apple makes it WAY TO DAMN EASY to keep your **** backed up, cause they realize, as much as they try to control all the parts, a hard drive is a hard drive. Its going to fail. SSD or Normal Mechanical.

Regardless, they will take care of you.

Also as of writing this message, one of my mbp's is backing up to my nas using time machine. flawless and simple, didnt notice it was doing it, havent looked at the "time machine clock" in a long time.

I love time machine. Also backs up any external drives (flash drive or hard drives) that i connect to any of my macs. :D

I'm not blaming its Apple's fault. C'mon, I know that nothing is perfect, and it is entirely natural that you can get a failing PC, which I don't blame Apple for. I'll need to wait for a few hours so I can get their support directly. Sent an email to the itunes department, though, since it doesn't seem that they have a direct email address (Think is for spam reasons)

    • All these CEOs got the biggest boners thinking about firing employees for AI. Turned out it was just a wet dream.
    • And the fact that the majority of people from Poland are white European Christians while the people you are complaining about in post after post are not is just a coincidence... Every sentence in your post I am replying to is racist nonsense. None of it is actually based on any facts whatsoever. All immigrants are seeking a better life too. It's literally the only reason they would risk everything and leave their homes, families, and homeland. They are working and contributing to the economy too, as you even admit. They get the same benefits your partner did AND that YOU are eligible for as well. That is one of the key things of the EU and a mark of a civilization. That is the definition of a society where everyone is given a chance, treated equally and fairly, and is judged by the content of their character, not their different skin color or which version of ignorant superstitious nonsense their parents lied about as children. Racists around the world said the same things about the Irish and Jews and Poles (like your partner) and...every other immigrant movement over the centuries. What's your family's heritage, by the way? Were your ancestors lied about with racist fearmongering crapola by self-entitled locals the same way as you are now? If someone like that said the same things about all people from Poland, like your partner, would they be right? Or would you want them to judge your partner based on who they actually were, not where they just happened to come from?
    • Again, this is an irrelevant attempt to attack the messenger. The truth does not require any justification.
    • Removed the blue and underline as you did not post a link. This would also  be considered spamming.
