need idea for server uses, please.

Recommended Posts

Hi firstly let me work you through the basic stats of my 3 servers....

I have 1 dell power edge, with about 2gbs ram and 500gbs HDD (72gb raid 3.5)

I then have one hp proliant with 12gbs ram and 140gb HDD (72gb raid 2.5) with quad core intel xeon 2.4hz per core

lastly I have another hp with 18gbs of ram (with space for 22 more ram slots) 8 x 72gbs raid hdds (2.5) with 8 cores intel xeon at around 3.2ghz

Obviously all can be upgraded

I need ideas ... I dont know what to do with them I want something that will either make me easy money or just be useful and to be done from a home network (for now, untill proper testing and use)

ideas? I already have 3 servers placed in different countries around the globe so a web server for a BASIC website is not really needed

I assume they're at home, in your bedroom or something because you refer to your home network. And I'll assume they are attached to this home network, and your actual internet connection is poor. At least not useful for any mainstream hosting as you've not even mentioned it.

My suggestion is to check if any of the CPUs support VT. Use that as server sole server, pop a few virtual machines on it and play around with networking/fallover load balance and routing etc in a sandbox network.

Sell the other servers on ebay.

With the little information about the servers other then cpu clock speed and storage sizes we can't fully offer you any great ideas. We don't even know the extent of your current network, your router(s) any switches you use etc.

I used to run a server back when LTSP was a pain to setup and run, very fun to play around with and if you have some older machines, you could get away with completly slient terminals with the server in the shead.

For actual home use, I'd say those servers are a bit much. The power consumption is very high, and I assume they're scsi drives rather then sata making them quite old xeon cpus aswell.

Again, I'd sell up, buy into a low power micro/mini-itx and virtualize some servers.

good suggestions tnak you and no they are not that old one is about 5-6 years one is 2 and the crap one is like 100years old or something lol they will be behind a home network untill after the set up... after that they will be moved to a location with business internet around 200mbs download and 100 upload ... with cisco routers, firewalls, hubs ect....

I might set up a "business" network for university students to penetrate with purposely left wholes ect creating levels to complete ... but thats something which is a massive job I can use vitually machines but have not tried a virtual network .... even if i had a physical with all these servers and cisco gear I would still need the VMs

    • Ocenaudio 3.19.3 by Razvan Serea Ocenaudio is a full featured, fast and easy to use audio and music editor. It is the ideal software for people who need to edit and analyze audio files without complications. Ocenaudio also has powerful features that will please more advanced users. To assist ocenaudio development, a powerful toolset of audio editing, analysis and manipulation called Ocen Framework was created. ocenaudio is also based on Qt framework, a well known library for cross-platform development. Cross-platform support ocenaudio is available for all major operating systems: Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. Native applications are generated for each platform from a common source, in order to achieve excelent performance and seamless integration with the operating system. All versions of ocenaudio have a uniform set of features and the same graphical interface, so the skills you learn in one platform can be used in the others. VST plugins support Ocenaudio supports VST (Virtual Studio Technology) plugins, giving its users access to numerous effects. Like the native effects, VST effects can use real-time preview to aide configuration. Real-time preview of effects Applying effects such as EQ, gain and filtering is an important part of audio editing. However, it is very tricky to get the desired result by adjusting the controls configuration alone: you must listen the processed audio. To ease the configuration of audio effects, ocenaudio has a real time preview feature: you hear the processed signal while adjusting the controls. The effect configuration window also includes a miniature view of the selected audio signal. You can navigate on this miniature view in the same way as you do on the main interface, selecting parts that interest you and listening to the effect result in real time. Multiselection for delicate editions To speed up complex audio files editing, ocenaudio includes multi-selection. With this amazing tool, you can simultaneously select different portions of an audio file and listen, edit or even apply an effect to them. For example, if you want to normalize only the excerpts of an interview where the interviewee is talking, just select them and apply the effect. Eficient edition of large files With ocenaudio, there is no limit to the length or the quantity of the audio files you can edit. Using an advanced memory management system, the application keeps your files open without wasting any of your computer's memory. Even in files several hours long, common editing operations such as copy, cut or paste happen almost instantly. Fully featured spectrogram Besides offering an incredible waveform view of your audio files, ocenaudio has a powerful and complete spectrogram view. In this view, you can analyze the spectral content of your audio signal with maximum clarity. Advanced users will be surprised to find that the spectrogram settings are applied in real time. The display is updated immediately when altering features such as the number of frequency bands, window type and size and dynamic range of the display.
