I like a few other members here can't stand Unity. I've never really been a fan of Gnome at all to be honest, but since they introduced version 4.0 KDE has became equally messy. I only really play about with Linux when I have some time to spare anyway but I would be more attracted to Ubuntu without unity.

Can't install it, because i cant get proxy configured for Ubuntu Software center...im using this at work. looks like i'll have to use this at home only..lame.

Here is an elegant solution provided by my good friend!

To sort your problem out start here: Make your life easier and switch to a root session in your terminal: sudo -s

Then: export http_proxy=http://domain\\username:password@proxy-ip-address:port

Then: apt-get install app (don't worry about "sudo" in front because you are already in a root shell.

Edit: Special characters must be escaped If, for example your password = pa$swo3d The \ (backslash) is used to escape in a terminal.

Steam on Linux does not mean games on linux. it just means that some or maybe all of Valves games may be released there, and some indie games, but most others won't care.

Most AAA game engines support both OpenGL and DirectX, therefore, it won't be much work to port them. OSX uses OpenGL too remember.

And speaking of games on Linux, I'm enjoying Oil Rush, 0 A.D, and OSMOS at the moment :)

Unfortunately I often find myself wanting to do tasks where Linux simply doesn't have suitable software available (I've never found this with OSX or Windows) so for this reason I still won't be able to use it as my primary OS.

Just out of interest, what tasks are you trying to do? Maybe we can help recommend some packages.

Compared to previous versions of Ubuntu, the newest one is absolute garbage. It doesn't even run on my netbook, and Windows 7 w/ Aero works perfectly fine. Linux can stay on Android, but for desktop/laptops, it's not acceptable at all.

Are you trying to be smart here? :) I know Unity runs on top of Gnome.

when i meant Gnome gone i meant the Gnome GUI(Gnome Panel).. The poster i was replying to was bitching about the GUI thinking it was Gnome.

I thought the core of Gnome 3 was gnome-shell and mutter? Ubuntu's Unity uses neither as far as I know. It still uses parts of it (Gnome), but not nearly as much as the full blown Gnome desktop.

It's a lot smoother than the past couple releases, and Unity actually behaves now. Overall, I like it. There's always a few nitpicks here and there, but I have no problem recommending it to friends and family.

I've tried several linux distro's over the years but, Ubuntu is by far the easiest and user friendly their is (personal opinion)

now I heard that Steam, is getting into linuxand that rocks. for me and my wife, we can now play our games on Linux and I must say, with that into(from steam news itself) means Linux will be a huge contender in Gaming. I really think some developers are seeing that Linux is a very viable platform. I just hope my Canon MX340 wireless multi-function printer has drivers for linux here. if that's the case, I'll only keep win7 on it for smaller functions.

All speculative.

Mint is just a distro based on a distro, based on a distro. It has no clear purpose. The codec argument is moot too, since Ubuntu gives you the option to install them while you're installing the system. But FWIW, I'll post my opinions about what you've pointed out.

The speed difference is negligible.

The theme is ugly. Sure it's neutral gray for most of it, but the airbrushed metal theme is very amateur and unprofessional (remember older versions of iTunes?). The green all over the place is annoying too. And yes, I get it - it's supposed to be "minty".

The only thing more "friendly" is the default applications. I'll admit that some of them are better than Ubuntu, but that alone doesn't make it more friendly. The Mint/Cinnamon thing is a personal preference issue.

It comes with the new continuation fork of Gnome 2 of which the name has escaped me.

Eh, no. just because a game supports OGL does not mean it's easy to port. that part of the game is the absolutely easiest part to port to start with. and the market is way o small for developers to spend the money required to port their games, especially when they also have to deal with the support costs of all these linux systems, when even one of them is harder to support.

I have tried Ubuntu (latest version) and I find Mint a bit snappier, especially the side bar thing (which I hate).
