togerland
The first one had an endless boot and i noticed the ram chip got burnt a bit. The second was working great for 2 days I decided to do a bios update and during the middle of the computer rebooted for no reason and corrupted the bios..... I called up biostar and they would never send me a new bios chip without sending in the whole board..... :( Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1078085-so-annoyed-second-rma-biostar-z77-board/ Share on other sites

SkyDX
I vote for GIGABYTE boards as ASUS ones gave me some RAM compatibility problems recently :pinch: But yeah Asrock and Biostar are usually not that great, I hope you manage to get everything running fine :/ Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1078085-so-annoyed-second-rma-biostar-z77-board/#findComment-594873577 Share on other sites

Vice
Get your money back from where you bought it and get an Asus board instead. There is a reason Biostar are so cheaply priced. I called up biostar and they would never send me a new bios chip without sending in the whole board..... :( The parts I've bolded are what boggles me - if the system was working, why on earth would you update the BIOS? BIOS updates should only ever be done if you are experiencing problems and there is a chance (or documented note in the changelog) that they've addressed the issue you are having. Rarely they should be done for performance improvements, but those generally are a result of fixing a problem. Dysphoria
I got the Biostar TZ77B and is working perfect. That is for $100 less than the Gigabyte offering. I matched that with a i3770k running at 4.5GHz on air cooling and stock voltage, and 16GB of GSKILL 2133MHz. I am loving it. Because they generally add new features or improvements like bug fixes, etc. Like my netbook, there were complaints that it wouldn't accept 8GB of RAM (wouldn't post), even though the chipset supported it. A BIOS update was released to fix the issue. I've never had a bad flash... Yes, they will fix bugs, but that's not my point - my point is that if your system is not exhibiting any problems, why bother? There's too much risk involved for too little reward for a perfectly functioning system. For example, your netbook won't accept 8GB of RAM - if you're only running 4GB and aren't planning to upgrade, the fix is useless to you, so why tempt fate? togerland
Bios updates should only be done if the update directly addresses the problem(s) you are experiencing. A bad Bios flash can render a Mobo useless. Rule of thumb for the Bios- If it's not broken doesn?t fix it. I dont think it was figuring out my clock speed correctly on its own and I figured a bios update would fix it Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1078085-so-annoyed-second-rma-biostar-z77-board/#findComment-594880409 Share on other sites

metal_dragen Veteran Posted May 22, 2012 Veteran Share Posted May 22, 2012 If you cant update your bios without a promise that your board should still work then it is not a company I want to buy from x While in theory I agree with you - the problem is that BIOS is just software, and software is written by people who are prone to making mistakes. Unfortunately, the BIOS is loaded into firmware at the lowest level of operation of your computer - it's not like installing buggy software in Windows where you might get random program crashes but in all other respects it still works - when your BIOS is buggy, best case scenario is a functioning computer with lowered performance - worst case is a non-functioning computer (that is also potentially unrecoverable).
