Torchlight 2 Beta Weekend

Recommended Posts

Has anyone else managed to play Torchlight 2 Beta yet? Surprised that no-one has commented on this so far! I had an email from Runic Games with a key and game download link.

It's testing the Internet component this weekend (or multiplayer part) but you can play it like a single player by setting up a game and then passwording it if you choose to.

First impressions were pretty good - it's fast, fluid and still has that Torchlight vibe. It has the same graphic style as the previous game so whether that's good or bad depends on how you saw the original. Pets are brilliant especially the bulldog.

Keeping my pre-order and looking forward to playing the full game.

I hadn't realized this was going on so I didn't get to sign up until today.

I hope I get a key before Tuesday when the "Beta Weekend" ends.

you probably will, they're sending beta keys out like crazy right now so they can do stress tests on their servers

i had just signed up on friday and got my key yesterday morning so chances are good for you

I already preordered 4 copies, and gifted the 3 away to my wife and my best friend and my Mother, so my mind was already made up. I got a key yesterday and man, what a blast! I've played, my wife's tried it out going to be awesome! Cannot wait! For me one of the biggest selling points was mods and very minute DRM honestly.

yeah mods is what I was looking at being the best.. Also not counting the fact you can play this without having to be on the internet everytime.

I signed up for beta.. hopefully I will get accepted and make sure this is what I want to get

Hope you guys get in. I won a beta key via Neogamr so I'm pretty happy about that. If I come across any keys though, I'll be sure to pass them along to this community first and foremost.

As for the beta, it's amazing... I didn't think I was going to have this much fun because I was starting to think maybe, just maybe, I was growing out of the genre completely. I mean, I like Torchlight 1 and all, but I didn't like the town+dungeon type scene similar to that of Diablo 1. Torchlight 2 though has much more room to expand on, between great looking biomes, diverse dungeons and enemies, and quite a lot of work on more of the subtle things that create such a great atmosphere, like I found myself in love with the lighting for one. The music is also fantastic, and has me sitting here all giddy as hell hahah.

I've only played up to level 14 so far as an engineer. Decided to stick with cannons and blast everything down with a healbot to keep my life up. Currently just playing on Normal to enjoy myself and get a feel for everything. I've had little use for potions so far though. Mana potions I make use of mostly on boss fights, but I've got like 75 health pots currently since I'm pretty good about keeping guys off my tail. Will probably have to bump it up to Veteran or Elite when I try it with the next character.

For those of you considering buying the game, don't be shy: get with friends or people within the community to pitch in for a 4-pack for $60, so you all can save $5. lol, at least, that's what I'll be doing. I'm still having a hard time believing it's releasing at that price. So damn cheap to have something comparable to Diablo 3. Watching the Something Awful community, they seem to like both but have varying opinions on which is better. The general consensus seems to be that they both have certain details that one does better than the other, but overall: great games. There doesn't appear to be anyone saying that the games suck...

Well, aside from Diablo's errors, lag, etc., and Blizzard's actions being labeled as "greedy", but I'm just talking about the game content within itself and the general arguments I've seen for both sides.

I know deciding whether or not to buy into D3 is much more of a risk, but considering TL2 is comparable down to arguing minor details, there's not much to lose in picking up TL2 for $15-20, especially considering you won't be left high and dry with an unplayable game should the online servers go down.

Hope that helps!

Torchlight 1 was a snoozefest, so not going to bother trying 2.

Bad comparison. That'd be like not buying D3 because of D1 to be honest. :\

Like I said, many who've played both argue small details of which game does better at certain things, but the general consensus is that they're both great. It's just a matter of TL2 needing to be released and D3 overcoming launch issues. That's about it. Not trying to get you to buy into this or whatever, but my point is that you're talking about small differences (like how some say TL2 has more fast paced action, or D3 having more detailed deaths with ragdolls) for a big price difference.

Man, this game is fantastic, it's all Diablo 3 didn't deliver. It's like a re-incarnation of D2 but with a different theme and much more fun IMO. Well worth it, I'm buying and playing over D3 any day.

I have the complete opposite views of what you said. I feel as if it is the other way around for me.

I didn't even notice I had an email for a beta invite until I saw this thread and decided to check. Though, I doubt I would have played much anyway. Diablo 3 is my main focus right now, and I spent most of the weekend going through normal mode and starting nightmare.

I'm downloading the beta now though, I'll give it a shot when I have a chance.

    • That's just silly imo. The lengths that man goes to just to avoid W11 is just nuts. Very, very few home users would do that. I will say this though, he is committed. Btw, I note on askwoody that Woody Leonhard passed away March, 2025 aged 73. His site was one of my favorites back in the day. Belated yes but RIP Woody.
    • Because of the EU (a good thing) newer android devices been getting 5 years worth of security patches. Except some Motorola which found the loop hole, and offer ZERO updates. In addition, Google for years have been making where it can patch some stuff by updating the core Google Play Store itself.  As echoed earlier,  you take the security risk in to your own hand beyond supported.
