iTunes errors 21, 1603, 1604 when updating 4S from 5.0.1 to 5.1.1

Recommended Posts

I am attempting to update my jailbroken iPhone 4S from 5.0.1 to 5.1.1.

If I click the Restore button, I get error 1604.

If I shift-click on the Restore button (then use iPhone4,1_5.1.1_9B206_Restore), I get error 1603.

I have:

  • Ensured I am running the latest version of iTunes
  • Restarted my PC (Windows 7 x64)
  • Tried to use a different USB port
  • Restarted the Apple Mobile Device service
  • Reset the iPhone sync history in iTunes
  • Booted into DFU mode before trying update

Also, sometimes I get error 21.

Any ideas?

Sounds like your host file is checked to point to cydia in TinyUmbrella.

Uncheck to do a clean restore from iTunes.

I have formatted since I jailbroke 5.0.1.

My hosts file is clean.

I see you're on Windows...

You are running iTunes 10.6.1, correct? I tried doing OTA updates on my iPhone 4 from 5.0.1 -> 5.1.1 and it wouldn't let me (stupid Apple patches are not all that great)

You shouldn't have to use the shirt+restore in iTunes for this, it should just update via "download and update" / "update" over the apple USB cable. You're not using some crappy fake Apple USB cable are you? That will give you a headache.

You can also try resetting your phone settings (via your phone) to default before updating.

It's an original cable.

I have also tried to use a different computer, still get error 1604.
