Sharing Program Files across Dual Boot

Recommended Posts

I want to install Windows 8x64 as a dual boot option on my laptop that has Windows 7x64 already, and I want to share the already installed program files between both operating systems so I can switch back and forth without any issues.

My current setup is Windows 7 is installed on an 80GB SSD, with a 2nd 500GB HDD where the program files are installed. I plan to split the SSD into two partitions and install Windows 8 on the 2nd partition. I know registry entries need to be recreated, but I suppose you must reinstall the programs to add these entries to Windows 8.

I assume this will work if I just point the installation to the 2nd hard drive where programs are already installed, but is there any risk of causing issues by doing this between the two operating systems? Or is there a better way to do what I'm doing?

When I was first learning computers I had 2 copies of Windows sharing the program files directory. They screwed each other up very quickly. I'd advise strongly against doing this.

I would strongly advise not doing this, or at least be willing to have it blow up in your face..

You can for sure expect conflicts in permissions, as each site makes files under their own.. With chances of other conflicts showing up later..
