16 PCs need to have windows 7

Recommended Posts

Hello,

Now it is time to upgrade the operating system for all computers we have.

The original DVD we have is not with sp1 but it is the maiin standard one.

I've tried to install every thing manually and do update and applications setup as well but it is over killing to do everything all over again with all 16 PCs.

Please if there is any way to facilitate the whole process that would be awesome.

Note: All computers will have exactly the same operating system, applications ...etc the only differences in between all of them is computer name.

Thans and much appreciated.

NU!

Please more info about how to add windows updates to .iso I will create.

Install the AIK and point it at the image then you can add/remove drivers and applications to the installation image. The documentation for the AIK explains how to integrate updates as well.

I need to integrate service pack 1 and latest updates into the DVD and then run it automatically unattended. No need for applications at this point but operating system is the big part.

If there is any thing around already had been made for the operating system included all of these that would be awesome to have and use it.

Thanks and much appreciated!

Done this myself. Install your first machine, updates / apps / settings (do not join domain). when complete sysprep the computer and shutdown. on another computer download a copy of clonezilla (burn onto disk) create a read/write share. Boot computer (first computer) with clone disk and create a image (save to share). When completed boot next computer with clonezilla and deploy image (it will ask for share and pull it down). This is the most simple way i found.

This sounds good.

But can I use it from a USB?

You can legally download windows 7 flava sp1 language here

Of course there are no serials.

This sounds good.

But can I use it from a USB?

yea, the clonezilla wiki has alot of help and easy to use. I have tried WAIK and it is great (cause it works as file base and not sector base). But i found the WAIK not very first timer user friendly.

how much time does it takes for clonezilla per one computer.

Yea I don't think downloading from Digital River or anywhere else when you have not purchased the download is going to be legal at all

But personally I don't see a problem with it if you own a licence for it in the first place

Instead of using clonezilla you could boot the computer into Windows PE, make an image of it using imagex, and then replace the install.wim in a windows installation disk with the image captured using imagex. That way you have a customized image you can install using the usual windows installer. Windows PE and imagex are included in the WAIK, and the help file included details how to do it. You can then install it on the other PCs using a memory stick or disc, or through the network using PXE boot.

Well yeah but what I mean is, I didn't even know they offered it!

Back in the XP days when I upgraded my PC and wasn't able to install using my media because it had SP1 and not SP2 or SP3 and lacked drivers, I had to torrent an ISO and use that, would have been easier if they had an ISO to download.

A technet guide to deploying a custom Windows 7 image using windows setup and WAIK http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd744521%28v=ws.10%29

For step 2 use a windows installation that has the latest updates and your apps installed, run sysprep /generalize on it, and shut it down.

If you wanted to really push the image, use clonezilla with pxe boot and multicast - push the image to all 16 machines at the same time ;)

I am not a geek to start deployment myself so I think clonezilla is the way to go.

But where exactly to start?

I did read the info in the clonezilla website but really do not know exactly where to start?

Right now I am on my laptop ... can I use it to create anything?

What I read in the above reply that I need to setup windows 7 in one of the 16 machine and do everything I want including applications and updates and ...etc then use another computer to prepare the usb stick for clone zilla then add aan image from the computer I setup to it then run it in all>

This is what I understand so far, but I am confused a bit for how to make it in the usb stick.

Thanks a lot

Please advise.

Wow, since when did MS allow you to download ISOs without a technet/MSDN account :s.

If it is just a Service Pack, since Windows NT - every Service Pack for NT has been freely (except for download charges from the connection provider) downloadable from Microsoft. This has held true since the size of the Service Packs themselves ballooned (Windows NT4 Service Pack 5, to be precise). For more *in-demand* Service Packs, Microsoft has, in fact, pressed CDs and DVDs specifically for distribution at trade shows, etc. - again, starting with Windows NT4's Service Pack 5; however, it has been true with Windows 2000's Service Pack 4, Windows XP's Service Packs 2 and 3, Windows Vista's Service Pack 2, and Windows 7's Service Pack 1. ISO images of these Service Packs (primarily aimed at network deployment; however, they are perfectly usable for single PCs or even VMs) are still available via Microsoft's Download Center
