What do you call Elizabeth (the Queen) ?

An anachronism?

But an excellent parachutist.

Kudos to Gary Connery for his performance as the Queen's stunt double.

Jobless scrounger

To be honest she does have a job, she's pretty good at showing the world how incredibly British Britain is. Oh and although I'm not a huge fan of the Queen, I cannot turn my head to the studies showing that she brings tons more money to Britain because of tourism compared to the amount of tax money that she actually uses.

I'd like to know how she's a waste of public money?

^ She collects money from the taxpayers, I believe.

Queen of England's income frozen until 2015

Queen Elizabeth II faces a freeze on her income through at least 2015 thanks to funding cuts for the royal household resulting from a recently passed law. Her income has already dropped in real terms since 2009 as she has joined the millions of others affected by the economic downturn.

The funding for the royal family has traditionally come from the civil list, a public fund controlled by the British Parliament. However, a law passed six weeks ago will replace the civil list with a single fund, the sovereign grant, in April 2013.

The sovereign grant will be 15 percent of the surplus money generated by the Crown Estate. The Crown Estate is a ?diverse property business valued at more than 7 billion,?? according to its website. It owns properties that include Regent Street and Great Windsor Park as well as ?almost all of the seabed around the UK.?? The Queen?s income will depend on how well the Crown Estate portfolio performs in a given year.

I call her a waste of public money, and a relic of a bygone era that needs to go away.

If you're British, this statement could be interpreted incorrectly as treason (a crime which still holds the death penalty in the UK).

Also, I think you'll find your statement is bent on a misconception; the Queen isn't a waste of public funds, her presence alone helps facilitate an awful lot of income for the country.

since the Olympic games opening "Ms. clinical". Absolute unemotional.

From the photos I've seen, she looked cranky rather than unemotional. I didn't like the games opening either, it was a silly and bizarre, even if well produced and well staged. So I can identify with the queen's reaction :)

A fact which reinforces the idea that the monarchy and some laws related to it are outdated.

The video I've embedded above explains how the UK could end up gaining more income, through tourism, if the monarchy was abolished. Perhaps the studies you've seen/read are incorrect? I don't know, but the video above sounds plausible.

Which would all involve confiscating the property that is currently owned by the royal family. And it also doesn't even mention the fact they also invite huge tourism at events like coronations, weddings, etc. Btw, who pays for maintenance of the property?

Not that you shouldn't abolish the monarchy, I just find that the video is kind of skirting the real issues, not addressing the heart of the matter.

Thanks for the points. I'll keep them in mind. It could well be that the video does that. I'm still not sure what to believe after seeing the video and after hearing about studies which have suggested otherwise.

I don't like the monarchy as an institution, but I'm not (yet) passionately for it being abolished. I'm always curious as to whether anyone can prove for sure that we will gain less income without it, though :)

I'm not sure who pays for the maintenance of the property. I'll have to find that out. It could well be us taxpayers, though.

They receive grants from the Gov. to pay for maintenance on various properties.

Well it just seems to me the real issue is not the money arguments -- since it shouldn't be decided on which way makes more profit -- but whether the property should be confiscated and made public, or the royal family kept as the conservators of the property, and as a part of Britains' historical institutions.

I'm an outsider so I can't argue that, of course. I have talked with some Swedish friends and they've basically given me the impression that in Sweden the monarchy isn't as controversial in Britain and they basically just see it as ceremonial and a somewhat of a celebration of Sweden's history.

    • For a guy who claims to hate Farage and the ignorant, gullible, rightwing racist skinheads sponsored by Putin that his lies represent, you sure are quoting them time and time and time again, mate. I guess you're conveniently ignoring the fact that your country and commonwealth just happened to work much better when it was still part of the E.U.? Denial isn't just a river in Egypt.
    • Do you live in the U.K? Do any of the people here that are against the UK leaving the E.U, live in the U.K? If not then why are you bothered? If you do live here then it is a different thing . Brexit was a good idea, should have done it years before, it was done badly, but the idea was good. You are saying the same thing as remainers do, oh we did what Putin wanted, we listened to the lies and Farage. I hate Farage and never believed most of what he said, certainly did not believe the £350m a week for the NHS. But we did pay a lot of money to the E.U and yes some of it came back, but what is the point of paying it out for only some of it to come back? Get out of the E.U, no money to them and in theory we can use the money to do things in the country. I said in theory, but our governments are a total and complete waste of space. No matter what colour rosette they wear. You and others say it was a mistake and yet the two main parties in the U.K are not looking at rejoining the EU, I wonder why that is? I was not tricked by anyone. Makes no odds now, we are out and have been for 10 years, what we need is a decent government to run the country. All they do is shout at each other like a load of kids and seems to do nothing and make this country more into a police and nanny state. Getting more like China all the time.

    • Yeah... The root of my comment, ostensibly, is how to spin the story via the actual technical merits of the solution! * Decentralized (aka federated) solution with built-in encrypted ephemeral message transport, * Transport via Relays (intermediary servers) with no message archival, * Second configurable pathway are actual email servers (if DNS records are programmed accordingly) via IMAP protocols carriage, * "Chat-over-Email" is the design pattern adopted; it can either leverage full-blown Email Server (must use the INBOX folder) to exchange all received messages/edits/reactions (so be weary of notifications overloads) [best practice is creating a separate email acct used explicitly for federated chat purposes!] or leverage its built-in Relay Server mechanism which actually resides on-device (by default but can be configured otherwise), * By virtue of be a decentralized/federated model, all other intermediary servers who may pass-along messages (while the recipient's final relay/device is inaccessible) cannot snoop on the messages due to the encrypted nature of contents. The intermediaries may, however, analyze the metadata due to the simple fact that routing mechanisms require hints for relay destinations. Unfortunately, whomever is posting about DeltaChat across socials are misleading with "zero metadata" claims -- especially when the Relays (according to their own technical documents) mandate the addition of chat-version metadata and other decorations in order to actually transport any message. -- Based on this summary, I'd prefer if they'd better dual-path message transport (email server add-in, federated relay engine) rather than patch-on email protocols to existing federated social media frameworks. They're frankensteining something rather than extending widely-deployed technology stacks.
