I can afford to buy a new video card but I can't afford to buy a new computer. It'd be pointless to upgrade my Radeon HD 4870 when I'm still using an Intel Core2Duo E6750 and a motherboard that doesn't support DDR3 RAM.

Other games that dropped support for DX9 can run on DX10 hardware (e.g. Black Ops 2, Battlefield 3, Need for Speed: Most Wanted). According to the Steam Hardware & Software Survey, 32% of Steam users have DX10 systems. It's not as big as the 53% that have DX11 systems but it's still big enough to warrant attention. I know that Crysis 3 won't be released on Steam but the survey is a good indication of the hardware that PC gamers use.

Anyway, it's unlikely that Crytek will add DX10 support to Crysis 3 so the only real hope that's left is for them to leave DX9 support in (since CryENGINE 3 supports it).

Anaron - are you saying that you don't have $400USD?

It would cost you no more than that to upgrade to an i5, apropos RAM (8 GB), supporting motherboard, *and* an AMD HD7770 from Newegg.

CPU - Intel i5-3330 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116781

RAM - Patriot Viper DDR3-1600 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220685

GPU - MSI R7770 AMD HF7770 GHz Edition - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127687

Try that parts list on for size.

(The motherboard and GPU are from my own build shortlist - as I refuse to recommend what I wouldn't normally use myself. I went to the Egg because I have no idea if you have a MicroCenter or ewquivalent nearby.)

No, that's not what I'm saying. It's a mix of waiting for new hardware (e.g. Radeon HD 8K series) and spending my money on things that I need now (like new glasses and a new smartphone). Plus, I'd rather buy a new computer because I want to pass down my current one to my younger brother. It's fine for playing games like Dota 2, League of Legends and Team Fortress 2. The parts you listed are very tempting. I'm sure I can get them at a similar price somewhere in Canada.

Far Cry 3 has raised the graphical bar, so I'm really interested to see what Crysis 3 will be like. The gameplay videos are pretty impressive but the levels look very linear and quite constrained. Oh, and I really hope it's released on Steam.

Far Cry 3 in-game:

Far Cry 3 is quite impressive. It's one of the best-looking games out right now. Crysis 3 looks impressive too. Judging by the screenshots, it's safe to say that it looks much better than the original Crysis. As for Crysis 3 and Steam, I highly doubt it would happen.

And they said that's alpha footage or was that alpha gameplay in the video demo? I'll be getting a new video card at some point next year to cap off my new psu, ram and ssd upgrades. I'm still rocking the same mobo and Core i7 920 though.

A 7770 now, and to run Crysis 3, is a terrible suggestion.

The rest, sure, fine, but the bottom end to run Farcry 3 on high is the 7870 / GTX 660 level, we can assume Crysis will be in that ballpark.

Crysis 3 Enlists Albert Hughes To Enumerate Its Seven Wonders

seven-wonders.jpg

Albert Hughes, co-director of Menace II Society and From Hell, is taking on the Crysis universe in a new series of live-action short films based on Crysis 3.

The shorts are centered around what's new to Crysis: Enemies, weapons, enviroments, and so on. Each short will focus on a specific aspect, explaining what makes them tick and how they fit into the larger story as our nano-suited hero takes on the Cell Corporation in a ruined New York City.

They're also promised to be action-heavy, demonstrating the gameplay as well as various points of the game.

I can hold off on playing Crysis 3 till after I get a new video card. I'm thinking a future HD 8870 would be nice, depending on price, 2nd option would be a 8850 just to save a bit of money.

  • 2 weeks later...

Crysis 3 has the most realistic vegetation I've ever seen in a video game. Also, it's a DX11-only title. Cevat Yerli confirmed it in an interview with GameTrailers (see here). He mentions Crysis 3 being DX11-only at around 5 minutes and 25 seconds.

While the idea of running through long grass sniping aliens (New design yet again) and CELL guys with exploding arrows makes me immensely happy, I'm still not sure if the game is going to be good, especially considering how much it changed from 1 to 2.

Basically, if NanosuitNinja is interested, I'll be interested.

Not only no, but HECK no.

CryENGINE3 is a known quantity, and the ONLY way you'd need an HD7870 *or* GTX660 is if you were running on Ultra *and* at 1920x1080 and maxed out the textures - that's not low-end in the slightest.

I'm not talking all-out high-end or extreme-end here.

By the by, what engine is FC3 using?

By the by, what engine is FC3 using?

I's using a modified version of Cryengine... I don't remember very well....the exact name.

Dunia, which is a heavily modified version of CryEngine. Far Cry 3 uses Dunia 2, to be specific.

Not only no, but HECK no.

The 7770 will run high at 1680, most likely. It's a dead card, at this point, especially for Crysis 3, when the 8000 series should be out by the time the game is out.

    • VidCoder 12.20 by Razvan Serea VidCoder is a DVD/Blu-ray ripping and video transcoding application for Windows. It uses HandBrake as its encoding engine. Calling directly into the HandBrake library gives it a more rich UI than the official HandBrake Windows GUI. VidCoder can rip DVDs but does not defeat the CSS encryption found in most commercial DVDs. You’ll need the NET 8 Desktop Runtime. If you don’t have it, VidCoder will prompt you to download and install it. The Portable version is self-contained and does not require any .NET Runtime to be installed. You do not need to install HandBrake for VidCoder to work. Feature list: Multi-threaded MP4, MKV containers Completely integrated encoding pipeline: everything is in one process and no huge intermediate temporary files H.264, H.265, MPEG-4, MPEG-2, VP8, Theora video Hardware-accelerated encoding with AMD VCE, Nvidia NVENC and Intel QuickSync AAC, MP3, Vorbis, AC3, FLAC audio encoding and AAC/AC3/MP3/DTS/DTS-HD passthrough Target bitrate, size or quality for video 2-pass encoding Decomb, detelecine, deinterlace, rotate, reflect, chroma smooth, colorspace filters Powerful batch encoding with simultaneous encodes Customizable Pickers to automatically pick audio and subtitle tracks, destination, titles and more Instant source previews Creates small encoded preview clips Pause, resume encoding VidCoder 12.20 changes: Updated HandBrake core to 1.11.2. • Too soon, I'm still not over this death!
    • Normally, I admit when a title is clickbait (unfortunately, it's become somewhat necessary to compete against AI-dominated news sections today), but in this case, all supported versions is implied and doesn't need to be spelled out in the title. Of course, I'm covering a Patch Tuesday update bug that is only available to supported Windows SKUs. All our coverage relates to supported Windows software and SKUs only unless we expressly state that it's "unsupported", "unofficial", or "third-party". I'm sorry, but supported/official SKUs don't need to be spelled out as such in every Neowin headline.
    • ALL versions or ALL SUPPORTED versions? Neowin does it again.
