Seriously, if I did not spend more time on a console these days, I would probably be ordering another graphics card right now, and hell, part of me is still incredibly tempted to do so. This game is beautiful, hell, I will even say gorgeous, and it almost reminds me of the original game by how demanding it actually is.

Something has to be up though, as I have this whole GeForce Experience thing on my PC, it is supposed to recommend the Optimal settings to run the game, and right now it is telling me I do not even meet the minimum system requirements for the game, and that everything should be set to low, and I should be running it at 1024 x 768. It HAS to be wrong. I am running everything at Medium, a few random things turned up higher then they defaulted, and I am getting about 50 FPS on average. It is definitely playable, but I have a feeling the action may dip the frame rates down something fierce, as I am now outdoors.

I get how this series may not be for everybody, but for myself, it is about as good as an FPS can get as far as gameplay. The Bow is Kick Ass. (Y)

DL - that is what happens when you break out of the DX9c lockbox.

I noticed the same thing comparing Crysis 2 before the DX11 1.9 patch series to after - and I have as hooptie a DX11 GPU as exists (AMD HD5450). However, *because* the GPU was so hooptie, the general assumption was that I needed a better drug supplier.

Crysis 2 was a first attempt by Crytek to break out of that feature lockbox that DX9c (and current-generation consoles, to be honest) represents. Where I am MOST curious is whether the version of the Original Crysis included with the DD package is still using the original engine, or did they completely redo the coding using CE3 - if the latter, it would make an interesting heads-up shootout! (If the FORMER, that should be Crytek's NEXT "freebie" project - a complete recoding of the Original Crysis using CE3.)

I'd think you would be able to run high settings fine with that card. I've been able to run it very smoothly on a similar powered card. I have it on all high settings at 1080p (with textures on "very high" and aa on SMAA 2x) on my amd 6950 2gb. I just had to turn vsync off (with it on my fps was extremely sporadic, but with it off its smooth sailing)

Yeah Larry, that sounds odd. My 7950 is averaging 50fps with almost everything set to very high. Use FXAA, and tone down post processing.

Also didn't get far into it, but gorgeous game, even if the story is quite...off..

I will play with my settings. Only thing I did put to High was post processing, sounded like something that should be high. :rofl: And I would see as high as mid 70's as well, just seemed like 50 was the average. That is everything on Medium, Post Processing on High, AA and AF pretty cranked up (I do not like jaggies whenever possible), so will see if I can get some High settings working. I think the whole Nvidia GeForce Experience thing is just broke, at least for Crysis 3.

It was actually 2 full disks. But in what can only be described as true irony, I think I got bum disks!!! :angry: My PC will not even register them as disks, and I just burned a DVD for my parents the other day, so know my drive works.

Fortunately I was able to plug in my serial number into Origin, and it recognized it right away. Currently at 30% complete with the download. Go figure.

I do not regret it at all though, got a $20 Amazon credit for getting it from them. (Y)

you know even though I only have a DVD drive on it, I had to install the AHCI drivers for my Intel chipset for it to read my Prototype 2 disc. I can't remember the last time something that dumb happened.

Sometimes is protected DVD's and some DVD-players can't handle those.

I know Plextor is kinda known for now playing protected (new) DVD's all the time....

Yes - remember to clean up your mess after your bowkills. (Have we forgotten "First Blood - Part II" already? His main weapon could easily the direct ancestor of Prophet's Predator Bow - from the bow itself to the arrows. By retrieving the shafts, it's a lot more nerve-racking (for the opposition) than policing your brass as a sniper, as all you are leaving are corpses.)

To all the moaners and groaners over Crysis 3 being a system melter, seriously consider dropping the settings down. What do you really lose - other than bragging rights - if your system can't run this beast of a game maxed out? (Yes; I installed the game myself a half-hour ago, and I already KNEW I would NEVER be able to max it out, even if I scored every upgrade from my Dream Sheet. However, the game STILL looks gorgeous, even at 1280x720, high-end textures, medium LOD, and no AA. (Q6600, AMD HD5450, Windows 8 Pro with Media Center x64, 4 GB DDR2-800. Basically floor-level. Still looks jaw-dropping gorgeous. And if you still have a DX10 GPU, friggin UPGRADE it already! Your eyeballs will thank you.)

All that post did (and thanks for it) is re-prove my point - if you have a DX11 GPU, the game runs well to extremely well. For me specifically, the boggle factor is that I'm actually at slightly HIGHER (not lower) settings compared to a fully-upgraded (1.9 plus DX11 patch and texture set) Crysis 2 on the same hardware. For that reason, I seriously suspect some jiggering got done SOMEWHERE, as it runs largely better - not worse. Not even CLOSE to being worse. Even the hiccups I AM having are easily explained by background I/O tasks (most HDD-related, and my HDD isn't exactly the fastest of even SATA-3.0g drives). The original Crysis was a system stressor of the first order - Crysis 2 showed (with the 1.9 patch series) a taste of what DX11 can do. Crysis 3, however, is a different sort of cat from either (performance and graphically speaking) - not that it won't push the high-end GPU hardware (which tests are showing that it's perfectly capable of doing) but thanks to all the fiddley options, even low-end GPUs can still run this game shockingly well.

Crysis 3 on max settings with dual GTX580s in SLI still lags a bit and the framerate is really not great..

BUT, if you turn down settings like shadows, and other effects that you really won't even notice in the game to high you get fantastic performance even on 1 GTX 580 and you really don't see the difference at all..

Boz - that was largely the same sort of thing I said about the 1.9 DX11 patch series with Crysis 2.

One thing those patches for DX11 did was add the option for DX11 modes to some of the effects that are shared with DX9c - depending, naturally, on how well the GPU is structured to take advantage of them, DX11 can perform much better than DX9. (This was, in fact, something that Microsoft and, amazingly, AMD, had been trying to point out when the first DX11 runtimes wound up in the hands of developers and end-users. However, between end-user kvetching and nVidia kvetching, most game developers and publishers basically went into stall mode.)

Between Crytek (Crysis 2 and Crysis 3) and Firaxis (Civilization V) not to mention EA/Maxis (Sim City 2013), there should be PLENTY of evidence to get other developers (and the end-users) off the DX9 fence - once and for all.

There's something in Crysis 3 that I'm now rather upset that the first two games (especially the original) should have had - a frigging TUTORIAL! It covers everything except the bow; while (apparently) geared toward CELL, unless you see CELL operatives in single-player with nanosuits, I would think that the tutorial would be of use more for the campaign (and CELL MP). In Crysis 2 the DX11 effects were added in a patch and were implemented pretty poorly, as evidenced by the excessive tessellation. Crysis 3 was built around DX11, which means they didn't have to worry about DX9 support. Don't forget that Crysis 2 was better optimised than the original Crysis and looked better (at least in my opinion). I think it helps that they're licencing the engine to other developers and will be improving it and adding new features based upon their feedback.

If I understand correctly to play the game at 1900x1200 at max detail I need 680 SLI or 690? Um, another title I'll play in about 2-3 years it seems...

I don't know how the singleplayer performs but I have a 680 SLI setup and in the multiplayer beta I was getting 60fps at 2560x1600, with maximum settings and anti-aliasing (SMAA). Therefore I think it's safe to assume it won't need

According to this benchmark a single HD7970 or GTX680 will get you 60fps for high quality mode at 1200p; performance drops when it comes to very high quality mode but it's a demanding game, so that's to be expected.

Well I played around a lot with my graphics settings today while playing, and ironically, turning some options up to High actually gives me better performance (I forget which ones off hand, on my mac laptop now, I can report back if people are that interested), which is just kind of odd, but hey I will take it. And while I could run High on most settings, I did not like the performance dips at all while outdoors. I could definitely keep everything on High and get 30 FPS, but I would rather get a consitent 60 FPS and have decent graphics then amazing graphics and 30 FPS, but that is just my preference on things.

Trying to play the game as most stealth, but finding it pretty challenging to get through a whole area while doing so, so it always winds up me going Rambo.

I've always enjoyed stealthing my way through, and Crytek have made that path pretty easy this time around (In 1/2 you can't fire weapons while cloaked, in 3 you can if they have a silencer, so a SCAR + optical sight is fine, lol OP), but one of the best improvements is how the AI gets "scared" when you whittle down the team. When there's 10 guys in a room and you kill 9, the last dude freaks out, screams into his radio, runs around, etc.

It's hilarious and I love it.

Edit: And I quite like how the nanosuit upgrades are based on a feedback model, so the more you use them the better they get. I've only completed the first 2 missions and I already have half the hacking things done automatically and can hear things through the binoculars from a huge distance (And really loud, too loud actually)

Edit 2: And you can sprint + power slide while cloaked too, it's kinda strange.

Core i5-750, 7870 "Tahiti LE" and 8 GB RAM.

This game still isn't 60 FPS @ Low (everything) details @ 1680x1050. Some scenes hover at 45-50 FPS.

It still looks fine, but having to use Low on a very decent system is quite ridiculous.

    • Nah. For every indie dev that needs to create code for "stuff" or textures, it's a godsend enabler to possibly tackle a project that you may not otherwise. The end result and testing will tell the truth if everything works or doesn't, or a game is just mediocre slop, but now these tools are now there and it's the developer's duty to judge the outcome, and even more so for pro studios. And you gotta remember that they will be at an early stage.
