Bad GPU or bad LCD

Recommended Posts

Hello. When I try to watch a video on youtube, be it full screen or not, or when I log to Windows Live Messenger, or just showing my desktop, I get some "objects" (I really don't know how to call them) all over my monitor. I checked the cable connection(VGA) and it's ok. I don't know if it's the cable's fault or not, but I will try when I find another.

My GPU is a radeon x600. Upgrading is not an option.

If it's displaying in the screenshot it's definitely not the LCD. What that screenshot shows is artifacts from the graphics card. It could either be bad graphic memory or a bad driver.

Deffo a bad card, nothing to do with drivers. make sure its seated correctly and has enough juice to power it, the only other times I have seen this happen and it wasn't power or installation it was due to over heating :(

If your capable enough, try a linux live cd of some kind such as ubuntu. That way you can rule out the current operating system/drivers/else. If it still occurs while using the live cd then its without a doubt the hardware videocard. Just boot off the disc and try the built in browser on youtube.

Thanks guys for the replies. :) Will try live cd. If it still occurs, I will have to replace the GPU. Again, thanks a lot!

Yeah at least with a Live CD you can verify its hardware related, then move on to checking its seating and making sure the fans or temps are clear and in range. If all else shows true then its just a failing gpu/card. In this scenerio replacing a bad gpu on a desktop isn't that difficult.

Make sure the fan is spinning on the card to keep it cool and there is enough ventilation in the case. Another way we could help is if you could possibly down clock the card and if you use any extra power cables to make the card work, try changing them. If all else fails, try changing drivers but I suspect that the card is dying and upgrading will be unfortunately the case.

The X600 is 6 years old so it's had a good life. :)

if you can take a print screen of it, then it's nothing to do with the monitor, it's the graphics card.

i have had a similar issue with software installed on my computer, mainly AVG free, which caused things to stick on screen, uninstalling it (for a totally different reason) sorted it out. try uninstalling your antivirus and see if it fix's the issue.
