Windows 8 RTM - What Works and What Doesn't (Apps, Devices etc)

Recommended Posts

Not a 'does Windows 8 work as a concept' thread, because like it or not those of us who work in IT are going to have to learn to use it

And broadly speaking I like it, I wish there was a bit more space to hit the corners on multi-monitors as its pretty easy to miss and shoot the mouse on to screen 2, but that's pretty much it.

From my various installs I've found that most things actually work fine, however there are a few exceptions, most of which I've found workarounds.

Microsoft Habu mouse drivers - DO NOT INSTALL!!! I did and it resulted in a BSOD and a no mouse on reboot. (Don't think you need them much anyway)

Asus XONAR - Works, but Control Panel does not launch and therefor input detection and SPDIF won't work. Guess we need a new driver from ASUS....

Lenovo Thinkpad X200s - Lenovo fingerprint software doesn't work, but built in windows does.

Lenovo Thinkpad X61 Tablet PC - Works fine apart tablet buttons and auto-rotate do not work, use Intel drivers to rotate the screen as required until a new driver appears.

Lenovo Update doesn't work yet - and don't try to force it via Win7 mode as it works and then breaks the install.

Cisco VPN client - Installs but can't bind to the VPN adapter - reg fix used in all the Win8 Betas still fixes this. http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/W8ITProPreRel/thread/fe19ec2e-d1f3-4ffd-b9a5-1fdf464fcd32

Cisco Configuration Pro - Install as normal, then set the App to run in 7 Compatibility Mode and as Admin, open it up and you'll see everything compressed up the top, make a note of the first part of URL (127.0.0.1:8600 as I recall) and then paste it into IE, it will show a tomcat error, that's fine - switch on compatibility view for this site and then restart CCP - should work now :)

Hope this helps someone and feel free to add your own :)

2 things I have noticed so far:

1.) Remote Desktop client from Windows 8 does not do Aero Remoting on Windows 7 host. This is an issue not because of the Glass, but because the rendering itself is impacted and no thumbnail previews, etc. Major disappointment on the RDP front as I am expecting many more sense they have all these great features but don't support them on all the platforms and editions.

2.) Windows Live Mail 2012 no longer works in "compatibility mode" to force the hide when minimize feature.

I need to research how I can get my company added to white-lists for the Adobe Flash to work in IE10 Modern/Metro.

I just put a desktop computer together a few hours ago to try Windows 8 on a live machine instead of VM's.

AirLink AWLH3028v2 150n PCI adapter didn't work. Windows didn't recognize it at all so I couldn't get it working.

As soon as I'm up again I will swap it for a D-Link DWA-525 PCI adapter to see if it works. Hopefully it will.

When I install more software and other peripherals, I will post any findings worth mentioning.

Wireshark. WinPCap isn't liking the version change. Run in Windows 7 compatibility mode and you'll be set.

Very true! I'd forgotten about WS.

You need to set the WinPCap installer in Win7 compatibility mode, not the Wireshark installer.

When using fullscreen with Flash on multi monitor system, both screens will show the video but it will be stuck and laggy. The secondary monitor will be a bit buggy.

Win8x64. Geforce 570 with 304.79 beta.

Haven't tested the latest stable Nvidia drivers though.

edit: It doesn't happen on all flash players btw. Have experienced it on Twitch.tv and Giantbomb.com

My Canon Pixma iP4600 Printer does not work ... auto install can't find proper drivers and software from Canon does not work.. Contacted Canon and they said to check back in October when Windows 8 is released....

    • Be sure to toss in a couple tacos to sweeten the deal, no one else sells better bridges!
    • Online didn't launch until October of 2013. So no one could play it. Even then there were issues.
    • Google Finance is now out of beta with improved portfolio tracking and a new Android app by Karthik Mudaliar Google is taking its redesigned Google Finance experience out of beta and adding several new features, including portfolio tracking, scheduled market briefings, and a dedicated Android app. The company says the updates are beginning to roll out globally this week, while an iOS app is planned for later in 2026. The most notable addition is the new portfolio feature. Instead of entering every investment manually, users can upload a screenshot, CSV file, or PDF containing their holdings. They can also tell Google Finance what they own using natural language, such as the number of shares held in a particular company or fund. Google Finance will then place those investments into a dashboard showing performance, asset allocation, concentration risk, and the holdings responsible for the biggest gains or losses. Existing portfolios created with the older version of Google Finance should appear automatically. The built-in AI research panel can use the portfolio as context when answering questions. For example, users can ask which sectors are underrepresented or how their fixed-income allocation could affect long-term growth. Google says portfolio data will remain private and that uploaded files and images will not be retained. Users will also be able to edit or delete their portfolio information after it has been imported. Google Finance is also getting scheduled tasks. These let users request recurring reports such as a daily summary of overnight cryptocurrency movements or a weekly update about newly announced initial public offerings. There is also a new Google Finance app for Android. It includes watchlists, interactive charts, real-time market data, a live news feed, and the same AI research panel available on the web. Google has been gradually expanding the AI-powered Finance redesign since it first entered testing. In April, the experience was expanded to more than 100 countries, bringing its research tools, advanced charts, and market news to a much larger audience. That was followed by a wider European rollout in May, which added features including live earnings calls, transcripts, and AI-generated summaries. The ability to import an entire portfolio from a screenshot or document should make Google Finance considerably easier to set up. However, Android users will have to wait for feature parity with the web version, and Google has yet to say exactly when the iOS app will arrive.
    • I now have a option to switch to 26h1 on my x86 system right in windows updates.
