Registry Restore from System State

Recommended Posts

Hey Everyone,

I need a bit of guidance with something.

I have taken a system state backup of a users old laptop, but I need to recovery something from the Windows Registry.

Does anyone know if its possible to perform a system state restoration on another laptop in to a folder / files so I can use tools to pull back the information from the registry?

I think I've got no choice but to rebuild the existing laptop with Windows XP on and then restore the system state and reformat again after I'm finished, but if anyone knows if the above is possible, that would be super.

The backup was taken using Windows XP NTBackup.

Many thanks :)

Those instructions are a bit of crap, imho, and useless too: if you need to work (save&restore) with Windows Registry copies you just need ERUNT. Couple it with something like NTFS4DOS and you can manage to restore a good-working Registry in DOS even if the system becomes unbootable....
