I'm a really big fan of the new iTunes design, especially the overlay that appears with album tracks and artist details. But for Apple to convince me to switch to their products, I think they might have to think of a whole new design philosophy for all of their operating systems that removes the skeuomorphism and is fully consistent no matter which formfactor the operating system is running on. I would love to see a design overhaul for their products.

It would help if OS X was more limited, too, like the new Windows 8 experience, so that apps could not overlap and Windows could not be moved about.

Their development platform would have to become much better, too. Microsoft have innovated greatly with WinRT, especially the idea of app contracts, so that there is a consistent place for options such as Search, Share, Settings, and Devices.

You don't hear that very often...

You don't :p But that's one of the beauties of Windows 8. It's one of the features that leads to the user experience being much better than their previous operating systems, and I would love to see something similar from OS X :)

I'm hoping for the Windows version to look somewhat more native than the current version of iTunes/Windows does.

Personally i don't really care if it looks native or not. Steam is not native. Creative Suite is not native. Lot of sortwares these days on Windows feature a not native black theme. Power DVD. Xara.

The problem is it looks Mac native on Windows. A black theme sorta like Songbird would be cool.

Non native looking apps on any OS are horrible and I always try my best not to use them (sometimes you just can't though :()

You already seem to be very happy with the Windows 8 experience though. So why would you not simply stay with that? I don't expect Apple to limit OS X in the ways that you're hoping for.

I hope it's a complete rewrite and not just a GUI update.

there is no such thing. Complete rewrites don't exist. even the jump from OS9 to OSX it wasn't a complete rewrite.old code was reused where appropriate. Noone rewrites from scratch, technically it's not even possibly, even if you where to start from complete scratcha nd not even reference old code, it'd be in your memory or you'd have learned about it and you'd use it.

I agree with you. Not sure the step specifically from OS 9 to OS X is a good example though, because most of OS 9's code actually did get left behind, simply because OS X architecturally continued NeXTStep's legacy much more than it did OS 9's.

Most yes, but a lot was kept, there's no reason to rewrite code that does what it needs to and rewriting it won't change anything and you'll just rewrite it the same anyway.

:p

I've never cared for iTunes...it really needs to be 3 different apps...the all-in-one player, manager, store doesn't appeal to me. That and it mismanages files like mad, duplicates them, forgets where they're stored.

I'm not completely happy with Microsoft, and even if I was, I would still hope another company would endeavor to come along with something even better (Apple probably are trying to, but Tim Cook has indicated he doesn't follow the same beliefs as Microsoft and I do regarding what PCs should be capable of). I will probably stick with Windows 8 while I deem it better than OS X (depending on whether I deem Windows Phone 8 better than iOS 6), but not also hoping Apple start to make better products seems silly to me.

I've been using iTunes since it was released for PC.. and I've never had it duplicate files or lose them.

You're fortunate. Good heavens, if I could pick from a Windows app to use iTunes would be way down the list. When you build a feature into the app to look for said duplicates, you know somethings wrong.

    • Oddly, there was a time that UFC games were culturally relevant, largely because of the graphics and gameplay that was different than the norm. But it seems like as the sport grew in popularity, gaming outlets stopped talking about the games.
