Repairing an LCD monitor

Recommended Posts

I got an LCD monitor for free from my neighbours and the problem with it is I don't get a picture. It is an LG Flatron L2010P. When I turn the screen on the backlight lights up but I don't see any OSD and if plugged into a video card there's no picture. I've seen a bunch of videos on youtube about fixing monitors and they all say most problems are the capacitor and it's an easy fix. I'm just wondering if anyone could give me advice with my situation and if there are any other potential problems it could be.

Might be a bad backlight. Can you see the Windows desktop if you shine a flashlight at it?

It helps to actually read the post.

Honestly if it had been the backlight I could see it eing fixable, with the actual panel being "dead" there's so much that could be bad.

Have a quick look over caps if any of them are leaking or building and see if they're resil replaceable, but I fear it might be a lot more than that.

But this one turns on. Usually the problem fixed with the caps is the back light.

In the video I posted the Acer logo showed which means the backlight in that monitor worked too. I should also mention we recently had a power outage this month. I'm still gonna check the capacitors but I was hoping someone would have a better idea for sure of what the problem could be.

Actually that video could indicate a typical fault where the backlight dies immediately after trying to fire up. or an input error as the OSD and actual screen obviously works on that, which it doesn't on yours.

Without a proper diagram and tools for the job, there's no way to tell what is wrong with the screen.

Ok, so I took it apart and looking at the power supply it doesn't look like any of the capacitors are blown from the top view. If I look underneath there is a little bit of flux residue under two of the capacitors. The bottom of the capacitors is slightly caved in. I'm not sure if that's normal... The brand of the capacitors are KMG/Sam Young, 2200uf @ 16v and 2200uf @ 10v.

EDIT: There is also a big capacitor which I didn't even notice that's 400v 150uf that's a dome shape. It doesn't have the typical three slits in it like the others.
