Windows X: If you like my sidebar when it is finished, could you include it in LTP 4.1? It is supposed to be authentic to the original as much as possible, with just one change: each module has a title section.

What I need to do is:

1. Add Preferences... and Add/Remove Modules... functionality

2. Allow user to disable modules and enable them

3. Add Host commands for persisting settings

4. Add lots more modules

5. Add hands to the clock

Here's how it's coming so far:

Some question please...

1. What's for the reason to hide if there's nothing much to hide

2. How'bout resources it's consuming?

3. What if I resize this bar?

4. Does it require .NET Framework? I hope it doesn't

5. Is it better than this one?

three questions for you Windows X :)

Is the Longhorn 4 transformation pack out yet or is 4.1 the next release ?

The side bar in your slate PDC vs, Windows X .. how do I activate it ?

(I currently use smartbar XP ... still configuring it though ...)

Can I add stuff to your sidebar like I can with smartbarXP such as news tickers ..etc ?

:D

1. 4.0 is not release yet so no 4.1

2. You can do it by install Longhorn SideBar 3.0 which release before Longhorn Transformation Pack 4.0

3. It doesn't meant anything to hide because it already fit with 800x600 and SmartBar XP consume so much for RAM so I make the smallest SideBar consuming.

1. The idea is there would be a lot of stuff to hide. I'm working on Clock and Weather modules and have finished a Notepad module.

2. Taskman says 30 MB, but .NET Framework programs are always reported incorrectly - it uses far much less.

3. I will add some code to let the user scroll up and down if there are too many modules to fit vertically.

4. Yes. People don't like downloading the .NET Framework, but they'll be better off overall, since more and more apps are using it.

5. Yes. :)

Your sidebar is great, it's just that this is somewhat more functional. Each module is a DLL and third-party modules can be dropped in the Modules folder and appear the next time the bar is started. The sidebar provides a HostServices object to all modules which lets them save preferences (for example, the Notepad saves it's text everytime the sidebar is quit, so that when the sidebar is started again your text is still there).

i have some questions of my own for you windows x

in the longhorn sidebar how do u change the pictures in the slidshow?

are there any ways to add/remove elements?

is there going to be a new version of the longhorn sidebar separate from any other packs?

1. You can change slideshow in preferences by read notes.txt and do what it told you.

2. For what? I use task link instead add/remove Much easier and more useful.

3. Longhorn SideBar 3.0 will release before Longhorn Transformation Pack 4.0 For new version, it's up to you guys about web authoring skills.

1. Hope you will done soon :)

2. Too bad. Mine use just 5-6 MB integrated in explorer.exe .NET Framework doesn't mean to everyone that will be installed on most of machine.

3. Mine doesn't need it because it was fit.

4. Can't you make it without .NET?

5. You can edit memo by run pack to edit memo and there's nothing much I can expect from you for now.

Doesn't seem to work with uxtheme patch. The style/theme doesn't show up in themes, right click -> properties -> themes, after you use the installer. I know you said about stle xp, but uxtheme is free....

If I navagate to /windows/resourcesthemes I can use it, but that it a bit of a pain in the ass... Also I can't work out how to get the task pane/clock to work. How do I do that?

    • Nothing is stopping you from continuing with your testing cadence. If updates are released every 2 weeks instead of 4, and you test once every 4 weeks, the exact same amount of patches will still be available for you in those 4 weeks. For example: Before 4th week - patch 1, 2, 3, 4 After 2nd week - patch 1 and 2 4th week - patch 3 and 4 Still the same amount after 4.
    • Everyone else has said it. I'm gonna say it - you don't know what you're talking about. I do. I have two laptops. One work, one personal. I have access to two more laptops - both personal. At home I manually update my personal laptop when I see on Neowin that there is an update - I carry on and only apply the updates when I am ready. My work one only updates when my workplace decides to send it - I carry on and only apply the updates (when they actually arrive, which is usually days after the release) when I switch off the laptop at the end of the day as usual. The two other personal laptops only get updated when I get to it which is rarely - the people who own them carry on using them until I get to it and update them. All of the browsers on all laptops are configured to restore the tabs when launched. Google and Microsoft have changed from 6 weeks to 4, and it looks like it's going to move to 2. None of these changes affect how any of these browsers on the laptops are used. Not one jot. My advice to you is stop panicking whenever you see an update. Just carry on with what you're doing. This even benefits you in a way - from your comment you sound like you don't like the changes or the frivolous new features - great - then carry on as before!
    • AMAZON needs to take total accountability for this.
    • Server Summit had a heap of announcements, ADCS changes are baller.
    • Nice, hope they *finally* fixed the issue with the NTFS driver where the system would completely brick during large file copies using the built in driver. It's been broken for years requiring me to use the older, slower, NTFS-3G FUSE driver.
