Windows 8 Apps Nightmare

Recommended Posts

Well Windows Update just installed the cumulative update and now my App Store says I'm not connected to the internet. Also Windows Update no longer works.

I don't recommend anyone install the update just yet.

UPDATE:

"WindowsUpdate_8024A000 OR WindowsUpdate_dt000"

Ran the Troubleshooter and it resolved the problem. Seems a bunch of services didn't start when the computer restarted. What a mess!

Yeah, something is really wrong with your system. There's something fundamentally wrong somewhere. I honestly recommend backing up, flatten it, and reinstall.

I've had none of these issues doing the same things you've described doing, so there's something installed or changed at some point that has screwed with the system.

You wouldn't by chance by using any of the fun bypass apps to avoid the start screen, add back the start button, or allow for customization would you?

So, I bought Technet and have been using Windows 8 from a clean install for about a month now.

All of a sudden, I wasn't able to update or install some Apps.

I found a solution to the problem by using...

Now, it seems there is another problem. I'm looking at the Games App and it says "sorry this app can't be installed because your system doesn't meet the system requirements." It is installed though, and aren't the system requirements simply Windows 8? Luckily I had this in my "purchased apps" so I was able to install it from there without issue.

I'm beginning to think that Windows 8 is going to be a huge disaster when it comes to the App Store. It randomly stops working and tells you that you can't install apps. WTF was Microsoft thinking?

Also...I have 2 Updates to be installed...but where?

P.S. - The MAPS App is gone from the Store.

windows 8 will go down in history as worst windows OS ever.

I updated around 10 hours ago and never really had any problems. Been running it the whole time. The 'invisible' update is nothing new. I had been experiencing that since RP. I also had that 2 updates on the Store with nothing showing up even if I manually look for updates until a Travel update comes up when I manually check just a while ago. 1 more left. I don't have an idea with how Store updates work, but is it possible that somehow, an update is "scheduled" but not necessarily pushed through right away?

Exactly what happens to me and exactly how it works at least so far. An update may be shown up on the Store tile and within the Store App inidicating that there is an update but it is not yet available and you cant know for which app the update is.Maybe this will change with general availability but this is what happens so far so if you wait 1 day the update(s) will eventualy be available for installation.

Well I've been too busy playing Dishonored to mess around with my system. Everything seems to be working again. Games in App Store still says I don't meet the requirements, though it's installed and working fine.

I'll do a clean format in the middle of November when Office 2013 hits Technet. Hopefully Creative will update their drivers by then, and that Diskeeper will be updated as well.

Only other thing I can think of that screwed something up is CCleaner. I'm just never going to use the registry cleaner again, though I do like to clean out old MUI references from time to time.

I having huge issue with Apps. Some just shutdown or I can't even connect to the "Store" keeps telling me that my PC isn't connected to the internet. Mail, SkyDrive, Weather, and everything else that requires an internet connection have no issues. I ran the App diag and it found nothing. You should be allowed to adjust your APPS settings. How would I know what e-mail account the Store is trying to connect with. I have my gmail account for my XboxLive, Gaming For Windows, and I have a .hotmail account for my skydrive. I don't know which one is trying to connect.

MSCONFIG shows Windows 7 and Vista Ultimate which has never been installed on this computer under the O/S's and each time I reboot it "Selected Services" are ticked and this is after I choose "normal". I also delete Vista and that comes back saying it's found under my G drive. My G drive is empty.

How would I know what e-mail account the Store is trying to connect with. I have my gmail account for my XboxLive, Gaming For Windows, and I have a .hotmail account for my skydrive. I don't know which one is trying to connect.

It uses the same email address you use to login to Windows...

I noticed that you cannot update your metro apps without having Windows Firewall enabled.

What the hell does Windows Firewall have to do with software updates, I have no clue.

Why force users to use Windows Firewall, effectively barring other firewalls, I have no clue.

I fully agree with you there, a system cleaner for a yet to be released OS, where nobody really has any experience yet of the nuances and inner workings of, to safely tweak and optimize the OS....

I'm using local. I did try Microsoft account as well and got the same results.

I created another local account and that worked. That fixed the issue, but I don't like that fix. Everything is setup on this account. I just need to figure out what it holding back the "store" from connecting.

I have no problems updating apps with the built-in firewall enabled :/

Crap, maybe that's where my issues lie? I turned off the firewall a few days ago and have had occasional issues with the store (but it doesn't bother me that much as I rarely use the store as I find most of the apps in there rubbish)

Just a guess, but it sounds like the other firewall software you were using doesn't properly manage ports on your actual firewall/router (i.e. via uPnP).

None here. Just eventually figured out that you need Windows Firewall Service running to update metro apps for some reason.

Turned it on and whola I can update my Metro apps.

What do you mean? You're not behind a router?

Well I have this basic DSL modem box thing and it has a Firewall.

I disabled Windows Firewall service in services.msc and I was unable to update Metro Applications.

Turned it back on I was able to do so again. I am not sure what else I can say here.

I just checked, Windows Firewall is disabled and I cannot update things through the store.

Normal updates work - those rely on other networking services.

You Windows dev guys really have WAAAAY too complicated update systems, just update using like port 80 https..

Also...I have 2 Updates to be installed...but where?

I had this occur as well and managed to clear it.

2 things came together when this went away for me, so I'm still not sure which one did it or if it was a combo.

  1. Item #1: Run Windows update and install KB2756872.
  2. Item #2: Sync licenses

    1. Go in to the Windows Store
    2. Go to Settings
    3. Go to App Updates
    4. Click Sync licenses
    5. Click Check for Updates
    6. It took a reboot for it to clear

Either way, my issues with the app store have been resolved and I'm a happy user at the moment. I had the one you mentioned originally and then the phantom updates.

I have 11 updates it seams, well only on the tile, when i open the App store it dosent say updates anywhere...

Not even in the top right corner? Did you try what I posted earlier?

I am really curious if it resolves this or if it was perfect timing on my end when the issue resolved itself.

Already had that installed. It's working now, but it took some troubleshooting.

Everything is working now, so I'll just continue to enjoy Windows 8.

And is it just me, or do the Windows 8 Apps still suck? Haven't found one useful app yet. It's easier for me to go to eBay with Chrome rather than with the App.

I've un-installed every Windows 8 app except for Netflix and One Note. All the rest are next to useless IMO.

I keep on checking the app store every week or so for new additions but generally if I do install something it's gone within a few minutes.

    • Hello, It would appear so, according to https://finance.yahoo.com/news/how-to-hide-your-home-on-google-maps-apple-maps-204146687.html. Regards, Aryeh Goretsky
    • Hello, The Nvidia Founders Edition 3080 video card is approximately six years old, correct? Have you looked into whether replacement fans are available for it? Perhaps replacing those will improve cooling, especially when combined with cleaning the card's heatsink and replacing the thermal interface materials. Regards, Aryeh Goretsky
    • Hello, While ~104 GB of space may seem generous (at least compared to other e-readers which have 8-32GB), I feel at this price point the device should have a Micro SDXC card slot for expansion, particularly if it allows audio books to be installed and played. I hope to see more reviews of 6" phone-sized e-readers on Neowin in the future. It will be interesting to see how they compare. Regards, Aryeh Goretsky
    • Sandboxie Plus 1.17.8 / Classic 5.72.8 by Razvan Serea Run programs in a sandbox to prevent malware from making permanent changes to your PC. Sandboxie allows you to run your browser, or any other program, so that all changes that result from the usage are kept in a sandbox environment, which can then be deleted later. Sandboxie is a sandbox-based isolation software for 32- and 64-bit Windows NT-based operating systems. It is being developed by David Xanatos since it became open source, before that it was developed by Sophos (which acquired it from Invincea, which acquired it earlier from the original author Ronen Tzur). It creates a sandbox-like isolated operating environment in which applications can be run or installed without permanently modifying the local or mapped drive. An isolated virtual environment allows controlled testing of untrusted programs and web surfing. Sandboxie is available in two flavors Plus and Classic. Both have the same core components, this means they have the same level of security and compatibility. What's different is the user interface the Plus build has a modern Qt based UI which supports all new features that have been added since the project went open source. The Classic build has the old no longer developed MFC based UI, hence it lacks support for modern features, these features can however still be used when manually configured in the Sandboxie.ini. Sandboxie Plus 1.17.8 / Classic 5.72.8 release notes: Added added DisableCustomTitleOpt=[process,][y|n] to allow [#] sandboxie title markers on custom-titlebar windows (Delphi VCL, Qt, Electron) that were previously skipped to prevent DWM repaint CPU loops #5387 Changed updated bundled ImDisk driver to 3.0.2 #5419 Fixed fix Suppress logs for expected non-user SIDs #5422 SbieSvc.exe: SBIE2218/2219 error when run program as administrator #5417 fixed explorer.exe crashes in Application Compartment when Huorong Security is installed #5423 Download: Sandboxie Plus (64-bit) | 23.5 MB (Open Source) Download: Sandboxie Classic (64-bit) | 3.0 MB Links: Sandboxie Website | GitHub | ARM64 | Screenshot Get alerted to all of our Software updates on Twitter at @NeowinSoftware
    • Hello, Christian Maas' XVI32 is a nice (and very small) hex editor. Speaking of hex editors, many years ago a colleague and I who both worked at Tribal Voice managed to edit a copy of the company's PowWow instant messaging client to make it behave better now that all of its lookup servers and other server-side tech was gone.  The program didn't support NAT (RFC-3022 was introduced in January 2001, the same time Tribal Voice was shuttered), but it still worked okay if you manually set up port-forwarding on your router.  The server at http://powwow.jazy.net/ hosts a copy (usual warnings about downloading and running untrusted code from random internet servers apply). I occasionally use some tools like Funduc Software's Search and Replace and Application Mover when I need to make mass-edits to text-based files or move programs with a hard-coded installation directories, respectively.  When I need to figure out the exact LCD panel inside of a laptop, EnTech Taiwan's Monitor Asset Manager is my go-to tool for that purpose. JD Design's website (now hosted on github.io) has a number of interesting freeware and shareware utilities.  I used to use their TouchPro utility to set the file timestamps on software I was mastering to match its version number (e.g., version 3.00 of a program had all of its files dates set to 3:00AM, and so forth). Karenware has a number of interesting freeware utilities, too. Regards, Aryeh Goretsky
