Have any games actually been made from crowd funding money? I see plenty of games getting funding but I can't think of one that has actually been made.

We have to wait some time for the bigger ones, as they have long development times (well, not Blizzard-long, but probably 1-2 years at least).

Project CARS is a good example of a nicely progressing game that has been playable for a while. :)

I guess time will tell whether crowd funding is great for devs or if it all fizzles and turns out to be a waste of time, energy, and effort.

It is great for devs since it cuts out the middlemen.

The question of whether or not it's great for users remains. This is the only project I'm going to pay for before it's close to release.

It's now past $4.1 million totally.

Yup! I supported them on Kickstarter on day 1 and have been following them since.. hopefully it turns out well!

For anyone interested, keep in mind that this game probably won't be done for another 2 years at least

Yeah, that's something of a problem. It'll probably take 2 years for a system that can run it well to be affordable too.

As for stuff actually getting produced. I've backed some RPGs on kickstarter (the real ones, not computer versions) and got them delivered, although some have also totally crashed.

The Ouya looks to be well on track to being delivered, so I don't think we have to worry too much. Star Citizen was also based on if they can get $2million then investors will throw another $10million at them. Since they're well over $5million now the investors might be willing to up that amount (even if it's only to $15million that's double what they were originally expecting, and they'll be able to do a lot with it).

It's at $5.27M now. Surely that must be a record.

I just pledged $35 USD for the digital Early Adopter package. I figured I'd regret it if I didn't pledge and I'm glad I did it. There's just under 4 hours left on the main site and 3 hours on Kickstarter. I can't wait to try out the alpha and beta versions. :)

Man me too I wonder how long we have to wait

I'm sure the alpha will suck, just like with Miner Wars...

Haha. I hope it doesn't suck. I'm watching the following live streams:

http://www.ustream.tv/channel/mci66

The first link has audio + video and the second link only has video. They're very close to $6M ($5.98M as of this post).

I don't have my DSL yet (this week! Woo!) so I'm not up for videos.

They were just talking to Chris Robert's brother (Aaron Roberts) on Skype. They also reached $6M which is truly remarkable. $2M on Kickstarter and $4M on the main site (Robert Space Industries).

Funded!

The battle is over and we - PC gamers, space sim fans, WingNuts, Lancers and the rest - have won. You've not only met every goal we set, you've exceeded them. Star Citizen will be released because of your dedication and your willingness to put your money where our mouths are. Our gratitude is immeasurable; we owe you our livelihoods and will not soon forget it.

The question is: what happens next?

Our intention has always been to make Roberts Space Industries YOUR site. It's not a public advertisement for the game; it's a private community for those who are making the game happen. We want your input on what we're doing and we want to share our plans with you; the occasional passer-by doesn't concern us. The plan was initially to immediately switch on a wall that would allow only you, our backers, to access features like the Comm-Link and the Spectrum Dispatches. Kickstarter has thrown something of a wrench in this plan: we can't change the site until the Kickstarter backers are integrated, which may take up to two weeks, otherwise we would be blocking thousands of backers from participating.

Updates and features will continue, returning to a regular schedule in the next few days. The team needs a few days to collect ourselves and reform before jumping into the immense task ahead (after the last month, our husbands, wives, children and yes, pets, miss us!) We will also be launching new sections which have been in the works for some time: the Galactapedia will tell you more about the Star Citizen world, Engineering will introduce you to game mechanics that are being planned and Holovids will offer you video footage from the game as it takes shape.

What about pledges? Good news: those of you who got in on the ground floor are covered. Your ships have lifetime insurance policies and for the next year you will have the ability to purchase further tiers or upgrade existing ones at the initial prices. That's not true of everyone else: if you want to back Star Citizen and participate in this amazing community, you still can. but it's going to cost you a little extra as of now, and you aren't going to have as many extras (no lifetime insurance, for example.)

One issue which concerns us is what to do with the funding tracker. So we're going to throw the issue up to you: in two weeks, when the wall goes up, what do you want to see done with the tracker? Without the 'push' of the campaign it probably won't update very dramatically. but it's always possible it will go up enough to reach future stretch goals anyway. Should we keep it, remove it or put it somewhere else? We'll let the community decide.

We also have previously outlined the 'behind the screens' subscription plans available now. They're designed for users who simply want to give us a little extra support during the development - you're getting the whole story, regardless - but we will have some extra fun for our monthly contributors.

We can't thank you enough for everything you've done for this project. Please see the next update on 'The Pledge' for our promise to you. The next two years are going to be incredible for all involved and we're thoroughly happy that all of you are along for this exciting ride.

RSI: $4,098,056 (55,184 backers)

Kickstarter: $2,134,374 (34,397 backers)

Total: $6,232,430

I'm confident in saying that this is the most crowd-funded game to date. It's a testament to the continued survival of PC gaming. I look forward to playing the alpha and beta versions and I hope they offer something special for people that support the game (leading up to release). For early supports, we get lifetime insurance for the ships we're entitled to. In addition, we have the option of upgrading our packages (for a year).

Anyway, here's an early look at a space port:

Since everyone is a backer and gets a free game (including me), who is going to buy the game when it comes out? All the people who cared enough about it already kiccstarted it.

Was there a minimum amount you had to donate in order to get a copy of the game? If not, that seems mad stupid.

30 bucks. Actually, on the kickstarter site it says that only 34,397 people pledge, so I guess it's not that many after all!

$30 but that was limited to "first respondents". Once those filled up, the minimum price was $35.

Take a look at this ship. The cheapest package it comes in is "Come Fly With Me" for $250 USD. Current backers can upgrade their pledge ships and still get lifetime insurance for up to a year so I'll upgrade to it eventually. Right now, I have the RSI Aurora ("Early Adopter [Digital]"). I'm going to upgrade to the Origin 300i ("Make Mine A Double").

I plan on being a pirate in Star Citizen so I would have loved to get this ship instead. The Drake Cutlass is a $100 add-on ship that comes with a tractor beam and a docking collar. But it's only available for a limited time. Once the grace period ends on Monday, the ship will no longer be available for purchase.

They've raised over $12.2M so far. The main site has been redesigned. Also, ships purchased after July 6th will not come with lifetime insurance (LTI). This means you'll have to use in-game credits to purchase insurance for one, three, or six months.

Now is the time to make a pledge. If you do it before July 6th, you'll become a veteran backer. You get some rewards as well as lifetime insurance for your ship. The cheapest package is the Digital Scout for $30 USD.

Anyway, I finally got the ship I wanted from the beginning (Origin 300i upgraded to 325A):

If you've already backed them do you still only have until the 6th to get other ships with LTI or is it extended until the game is at some sort of release stage? I took a Colonel package last year and am interested in the bombers but they haven't revealed them yet, I don't want to buy something that's a POC when released like the Avenger!

From what I understand the July 6th date relates to a specific set of limited edition ships but you'll still be able to upgrade to other ships after that if you're already a backer. It's all a bit convoluted.

They made a post a few hours ago regarding this very thing - https://robertsspaceindustries.com/comm-link/transmission/13126-Grace-Period-Update

    • It sounds like you’re trying to rewrite a narrative to align this layoff with your political beliefs. Games can be horrible, whatever backwards notions you have don’t change that bungie has problems, mostly with just bad games, and arrogance. When they pushed Microsoft to let them be independent they lost their way. They hired on a bunch of people and they couldn’t justify the employee count consistent with their revenue.
