SSD Recommendations?

Recommended Posts

I am thinking of getting a SSD for my Mac Book Pro. I am looking for a 512gb SSD that's a good price and reliable. It does not have to be the fastest thing ever just reliable and cheap. Also if this works out well I might just do the same thing for my desktop. Is it ok to put a laptop SSD in a desktop system if you get the right mount for it?

You're going to spend close to $400, just so you know:

My recommendation would be the Vertex 4, but the Samsung and Corsair are also good choices.

And yes, most SSDs come with the mounting bracket for a desktop PC.

Hello,

I have been using a 512MB Crucial M4 SSD in my ThinkPad X220 as a secondary SSD for storage for a couple of months now. No problems noted so far. The model I purchased was the 7mm high one, which has the same price and performance as the 9.5mm high model, except uses the smaller casing to fit into my ThinkPad.

I would suggest getting a 7mm high drive even if the MacBook Pro has a 9.5mm high drive so that if you want to reuse it in a computer that only has a 7mm high drive bay you will be able to do so without having to remove the casing and void the warranty on the SSD.

Another vote for Samsung 830, or the newer 840 (although the 830 can be found on sale). If you're not getting Samsung, consider Intel, or Crucial. I just avoid OCZ, as I've now have 3 friends with failed OCZ's SSD (and also my 1st gen. Vertex died 4 months in). OCZ is a hit or miss, but some have good luck with them.

yeah, 840 has a little bit more interms of IOPs but with the 830 you won't even notice the difference personally...

    • That's just silly imo. The lengths that man goes to just to avoid W11 is just nuts. Very, very few home users would do that. I will say this though, he is committed. Btw, I note on askwoody that Woody Leonhard passed away March, 2025 aged 73. His site was one of my favorites back in the day. Belated yes but RIP Woody.
    • Because of the EU (a good thing) newer android devices been getting 5 years worth of security patches. Except some Motorola which found the loop hole, and offer ZERO updates. In addition, Google for years have been making where it can patch some stuff by updating the core Google Play Store itself.  As echoed earlier,  you take the security risk in to your own hand beyond supported.
