GNU / Linux November 2012 Desktops - Posting Guidelines

* Embedded images should be smaller than or equal to 1440x900 (preferably 1024x768)

The file size for image previews should be no larger than 500 KB

Images linked externally should be no larger than 3 MB

* If you plan to img-embed your desktop, please try to keep it under 100k (It's recommended that you link it, externally).

* Stay within the board rules, no matter how yummy you may believe it to be.

* If you are going to quote, there isn't a need to quote an img-embeded picture - Just don't do it. Please just reference the post by page number/page link/etc.

* Off Topic Posts will be edited or removed.

* The desktops thread is not to be used as a means to post images of a pornographic or otherwise provocative nature. We do not support a babes forum and neither will we in an unofficial capacity. Please help to keep the thread relevant and safe to browse for everyone.

* The moderators of this forum reserve the right to edit or remove your posts as necessary so they may comply with our Community Rules.

* In the interests of keeping the thread on topic it is strongly urged that you format your posts in the following order:

Themes: Name/where you got it (with link would be nice).

Wallpaper: Name/where you got it (with link would be nice).

Icons: Name/where you got it (with link would be nice).

Programs: Name/where you got it (with link would be nice).

* Please use reduced-size thumbnails, where possible, out of respect for people running on lower bandwidth or screen resolutions.

I heard so many of my friends bashing it to hell. :/

I find it to be pretty good, currently my favorite interface to use on a laptop. You can find plenty of people bashing every DE/shell out there, just use whichever one you like best. Plenty of people use it and like it, but the loud minority would have you think its the worst desktop ever and that no one uses it :D I hear the same complaints about gnome-shell, but plenty of screenshots of people running that too!

I didn't use it on my old laptop purely due to performance issues, but now that it runs smooth as butter I love using it.

Would you mind sharing details on this please (background, icons, theme etc) ? It looks fantastic; simple yet stylish and functional. Also how do you get the terminal to display those details, what do I need to type?

That proves it. People do use Unity. :laugh: I heard so many of my friends bashing it to hell. :/

It's as bad as OSX if not worse when it comes to productivity in my view. I find it totally obtrusive to work flow, gets in the way, clumsy and just plain awkward. I'm only putting up with it for the moment because the programming book I have uses ubuntu (and therefore uses ubutnu conventions) and I haven't had time to see if I can get a standard desktop back or be bothered to get what I need from the book using another distros specific commands.

Visually though Unity does look quite nice.

Sure. :) The wall is Minimal Stripes. The theme is Zukitwo by fellow Neowin member lassekongo83. The icons, though they are not seen here are Faenza. That app is called alsi, I got it from the AUR. Not sure if it exists for other distros, but it can probably be ported. If you happen to be using Arch, check it out. Here is the configuration page. I am fairly sure in this example I used, "alsi -l -c1=purple -c2=black -u -s".

I've been growing surprisingly fond of cinnamon. Moved my laptop over from ubuntu to mint 14 rc. I really like unity, but silly compiz bugs cropping up all over push me over the deep end :/. I'm amazed at how stable and bug free mint 14/cinnamon 1.6 is.

      Because Chrome is doing it. And no one said anyone had to update immediately. That's silly. They could update every day for all I care as long as it's fast, and the next time the browser restarts, you're good. And the basic point is not to tee it up for bigger updates. As it is right now, all the windows I had open reopen anyway except inprivate.

      Why? Does anybody actually want this? The constant need to close all browser sessions and wait for a new version to install, just so that there’s a integrated coupon manager feels like a waste of everyone’s time

      Microsoft about to radically change how often your Edge browser updates by Paul Hill Microsoft has just announced that starting with Edge 152, it will be moving to a two-week release cycle for faster, smaller updates. This faster release cadence will begin on August 27. This change comes just several months after Microsoft switched Visual Studio Code to weekly updates. The company said that the Extended Stable releases will remain on an eight-week cycle and that no admin changes are needed to experience the faster release cycle on the Stable channel. The new two-week release cycle will enable the faster delivery of security updates and platform improvements, all while reducing the size and complexity of individual updates. Microsoft claims that organizations will benefit from this change as it offers predictable validation cycles. For organizations that prefer a “more deliberate pace”, the Extended Stable channel remains an option. This change will affect Edge Stable releases on Windows, macOS, Linux, and mobile. The Extended Stable channel will continue to be updated every eight weeks, or every fourth Stable release, for example: versions 152, 156, 160, and 164. The Extended Stable could be a good option for organizations that don’t want the latest updates twice a month and don’t want as much hassle constantly updating browsers. In the case of Visual Studio Code, many of the updates being pushed by Microsoft are AI-related. As we all know, Microsoft Edge has a lot of AI features, so we could see Microsoft pushing more AI, thanks to the faster cycles. On the flip side, quicker releases could mean faster security updates, which is beneficial in a world where AI systems are hunting for software exploits. What do you think?
