Need to convert Dynamic to Basic Disk without reinstalling, losing data

Question

Sorry if this has been asked before, I don't have time to search for it. Could someone suggest a working program for this. Thank you.

I tried a few free off of Cnet, by googling. But many are shareware really. They want you to buy to have the function, which I don't know if it works or not. I managed to convert one of my laptops but haven't gotten the other to convert. suggestions would help.

It would be difficult to do, and even if you find a tool, who knows if it will do a good job. Better off just manually rebuilding... Back up on a file level, format, reinstall the OS/Apps, restore the files.

as I stated I did it with partition wizard on one laptop but won't work on the other for some reason

The reason is that something is probably wrong. I would do what Simon- suggested.

Have you looked at: http://www.partition-tool.com/personal.htm (Easus Partition Manager Home Edition)

Yeah but it doesn't do conversion without purchase. I don't want to purchase and then it not be able to do what I want. I had this same problem before on my other laptop that I recently converted. Strange.

oK, Yes I tried one program to fix things and now it's not bootable. Anyone know of a good free data recovery program? I'm just going to recover data and reinstall Windows.

Yeah I found several "free" programs that have limited functions, they allude they can convert but attempt to get you to pay if you want that feature.

please boot your system with "Hiren's Boot CD" and select for "run mini xp". it will allow you to explore your hard disk and allow you to copy your data to other storage device. Hiren Boot CD is free.

Download:

for how to burn it please read here:

I have done this successfully in the past. It doesn't require conversion. You need to change the partition type ID (cannot remember what it is from the top of my head) to NTFS (which I am assuming that you are using. I believe the ID for NTFS is 07.

I have had success in doing this using CFDISK and FDISK on SystemRescueCD.

Boot to your windows install cd. Once at the first screen, press shift+f10. Now you'll be at a command prompt. Attach an external hard drive, then manually copy all the files you need to keep. Something like Robocopy /e c:\users\MyUserDirectory E:\Backup

Yes I followed a guide changing 42 to 07 although the picture and the actual looked a bit different. So here I am looking to reinstall windows cause it won't boot due to some blue screeen that flashes. I wanted to install Win8 dual booted with Win7. Dynamic disk preventing me from this and no software to convert. So at least I'm getting all my data back and will reformat reinstall following. I'll leave off the HP Ware as much as possible.

I managed to copy over some really important files so far, just waiting on the larger save. Most of it I probably won't need but we'll see.

Do you think you suggestion will fix what I discribed? so I don't have to reinstall?

What utility were you using to change the ID type? Ideally, FDISK under linux appears to be the *safest* option IMO. Changing the partition ID doesn't alter the contents of the HDD, or the MFT. If you are receiving a BSOD as a result of changing the ID I would be inclined to think there is something else more to it.

When backing up client data in the past with dynamic volumes, changing the ID has always allowed me to backup the volume as well as continue to use the OS as normal if left set. I cannot think of any other varying factors that may be causing it to BSOD.

Yeah I'm not sure. Just I know I changed that value and rebooted like the instructions said to find it not boot. I don't have much options at this point. Data is still being copied over however slowly. Got a few hours til it's done. If anyone suggests something that may fix it I'm open. But beyond that I'm looking to reformat/reinstall. oh well.

Well I'll look at what options were provided so far before I start to reinstall. I don't want to due to the software I will lose in this will have to repurchase. Unless MS cuts me more slack.

You can use Testdisk off some Linux LiveCDs to at least get your install back to working. Bleh. :/

Think I've found a solution. USB bootable Win7 install. I'm currently working on setting that up. Once it's done I can boot to it and install a program to fix the invalid disk and then use a imaging program to clone the partition once it's up. Then put the clone on this laptop with my good old Win8. Problem solved.

If it doesn't work like that, then I got MS tech in the morning which could help. Otherwise reformat/reinstall after making sure I've saved the data I want off of both laptops. :(

Currently my win8 install is doing me good at least.

Ok, so nothing I've tried worked to fix either of my situations. It came down to a clean install on both. Currenlty working that issue.

I will note that I used GPARTED to handle the invalid disk issue. deleting the partitions and formatting.

    • Microsoft AI boss no longer believes that AI will replace human workers by David Uzondu Mustafa Suleyman, the head of Microsoft AI, recently took back his statements concerning white-collar jobs that he gave to the Financial Times in an interview made back in February, where he claimed that AI would replace office workers within 12 to 18 months. On Monday's episode of The Verge's Decoder, Suleyman recast the technology as more like a helpmate than a tool designed to take over your job. He explained that smaller office duties will "increasingly become digitized, automated" as people generate more digital materials. During the discussion, Suleyman emphasized a "very important distinction" between "tasks" and "jobs" to clarify his previous claims. He argued that his earlier comments only referred to individual actions that people perform at their desks. Suleyman used to work for DeepMind, the research lab he co-founded in 2010 alongside Demis Hassabis and Shane Legg, before he left in 2022 to establish Inflection AI and build an empathetic digital assistant. Microsoft hired him in March 2024 to lead its newly formed "Microsoft AI" division, placing him in charge of consumer products like Copilot, Bing, and Edge. His February comments also detailed plans for Microsoft to achieve self-sufficiency with a $140 billion infrastructure budget to train frontier models, predicting that creating a customized AI will soon feel like creating a podcast or a new blog: The 41-year-old is not the only AI executive who's softened his "AI will replace you" stance. OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, last month used X to push back against employment panic by arguing that his startup builds tools to assist humans rather than build replacements. He had previously garnered backlash by suggesting that many modern office roles that AI might replace did not qualify as "real work" in the first place, at least when you compare desk jobs to physical, historical labor like farming.

    • Meta will now use data from outside businesses to personalize AI responses by David Uzondu In an update that's rolling out globally (except in a handful of countries), Meta will use your data from outside businesses to personalize your AI responses and your primary feeds. Meta already utilizes your shopping activity to target ads, but the company now plans to expand this tracking to personalize other "parts of your experience" like feed algorithms and AI assistant chats. The company is replacing the two settings ("Your activity off Meta technologies" and "Activity from other businesses") that currently let you disconnect off-platform activity with a single, renamed setting called Activity from other businesses. If you don't want Meta to manipulate your feed and AI responses using your outside history, you can just turn the Activity from other businesses setting off in your account settings. This toggle resides within your Accounts Center, applying your choice to every connected profile. Turning this off will not stop companies from sending your data to Meta. The company will still collect your web interactions, but it only uses them to train products, while still accessing external accounts you connect. When The Verge spoke to Meta spokesperson Emil Vazquez, the representative said that this update will exclude several locations at launch, including the European region, the UK, Brazil, Thailand, South Africa, Turkey, South Korea, Ecuador, Nigeria, and Kenya. The new update comes at a time when the social media giant is recovering from a major PR disaster involving generative AI. Last week, there was a huge security issue on Instagram where attackers figured out a way to trick Meta AI into handing over account ownership (even if the victim had 2FA enabled). Some of the affected accounts include the dormant Obama White House profile, cosmetics brand Sephora, the Chief Master Sergeant of the Space Force, and security researcher Jane Manchun Wong. Internally, the company also had to scale back plans on its Model Capability Initiative (MCI), an employee-monitoring program designed to train corporate AI models by recording worker keystrokes and screen activity, after employees raised privacy concerns and complained about severe battery life drain.
