travel New York's New Years celebrations

Me and three friends are going to New York this December and we will be staying in Manhattan a couple of blocks away from Times Square. Was wondering if someone could recommend a good place / event to go on New Year's eve. I did some research already but the right information is scarce and since this is my first time there it's a little bit difficult choosing a venue. Some people suggested Times Square but after reading a little bit about it it's rather overcrowded and everything ends by midnight.

These sites have a list of the various events taking place near Times Square. Most of the restaurants off of Times Square will offer an open bar and appetizers for about four hours. There are also clubs/lounges that you could go to. One thing to keep in mind is that If you go to a restaurant or bar/lounge that is off of Times Square, you most likely won't be able to go outside to see the ball drop and then come back inside. Just look through the descriptions of the events and find something that is of interest.
