Processor help (AMD only)

Recommended Posts

Hey again Neowin,

Please read through before answering.

I'm a little confused, I'm building a new PC and have a question...

I was thinking of buying the amd bulldozer, there's one I've found on ebay quite cheap, 8 core...

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AMD-FX-4130-Quad-Core-X4-CPU-3-8GHz-AM3-Bulldozer-Black-Edition-/200848092343?pt=UK_Computing_CPUs_Processors&hash=item2ec37aacb7

I would like to make it clear, I consider myself a Novice at this, (I know HOW to build em, but that's about it)

This is where I found myself confused, out of my depth etc... I read somewhere that this chip isn't as good as older amd chips, for example..

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AMD-Phenom-II-Black-Edition-X6-Processor-1100T-Heatsink-/110976886121?pt=UK_Computing_CPUs_Processors&hash=item19d6bce569 (please note, links are purely for reference)

Can someone who knows what they are talking about spare some time to explain in simplified english whether the bulldozer or the phenom is the better processor?

I get lost in technical jargon, benchmarks are lost on me also, but if you understand them, could you spare a few minutes to explain which would be the better purchase?

(It's going into an asus crosshair v mobo, this is a personal preference and already purchased)

EDIT..

Thank you to the moderator who deleted my repost, I don't know what happened there

your better off betting the bulldozer range.. those little benchmark differences you see factor in many things like different hardware on the earlier processor and different on the bulldozer ones! but i have noticed while i was planning to build my own pc that bulldozers were way better. instead i still did end up buying the i7 2600k just because of that little more perofrmance it promises. but now that i have it and compare to wut the amd ones offered i feel like i kinda wasted my money. there almost the same when it comes to gaming or other things.

go for the bulldozer ones, thats what i would recommend.

I don't keep up with AMD, but if memory serves me this time around... The bulldozer is best run on Windows 8 due to the way Windows schedules threads not being optimized for that processor until the new scheduler added in Win8.

It will obviously work for Windows 7, but it would be slower than if run on 8.

I have the PII 965 BE

Reason I still have this? Because it still beats AMDs latest CPU range in certain benchmarks (bulldozer were sh**e)

Hold off, piledriver / steamroller, / I bought a CHVF board hoping to continue upgrading from DDR2 and AM2 to DDR3 to AM3+, so far I have managed to upgrade my RAM and Board, I wish the ?????? was in my pocket

My advice, if you have an AM3+ board, wait, see what Piledriver/ Steamroller offer over Phenom II's - So far, there is no reason to upgrade imo

Ok I don't mind waiting a little longer to see what those processors that were mentioned can do, but my current system is an old athlon dual core and it is showing signs of it's age.

The bulldozer impressed me mostly because of how cheap it was to buy, but if it's false economy then I'll wait.

Something I failed to mention in my OP was that I'll be staying with Win7 and not getting Win8, so my thanks go to both of you for taking the time to help me.

(Nothing against win8, I just am not interested for now)

definitely get the FX CPU, I used a Phenom II X4 Black Edition for like two months before switching to Intel 22nm Core i5. It was a good CPU, but noisy as hell. The FX series is much quieter and more efficient. I'd take and Athlon II X4 over a Phenom II.

    • I haven't paid for windows since windows 8. So I guess I would be happy to pay for a new version if it meant seeing fewer adverts (none) or product pushes. But that applies to _any_ service or OS.
    • Save 35% on Sony's SS-CS5M2 3-way high-res bookshelf speakers by Taras Buria Sony is currently offering a big discount on its SS-CS5M2 bookshelf speaker, saving you 35% on a set of high-quality audio equipment. The SS-CS5M2 is a passive 3-way bookshelf speaker with a 5.12-inch woofer, a 25 mm soft-dome tweeter, and a 19 mm super tweeter. This design allows different drivers to handle different parts of the sound spectrum for a clearer, more detailed audio when watching movies or listening to music. The compact cabinet size allows you to place these speakers on shelves, desks, or stands, making them a practical choice for apartments, bedrooms, and small living rooms. Despite its compact size, the SS-CS5M2 delivers up to 100 W of power. Note that since the speakers are passive, you will need an amplifier to drive them. However, if you do, you can use them for high-resolution music, thanks to a claimed frequency response of 53 Hz - 50 kHz. It is able to extend so far high in the spectrum as a result of those super tweeters. While they will work with most amplifiers and AV receivers, Sony says this pair is a perfect match for its AV receivers, such as STRDH190, 590, 790, or 1000. • So they somehow expect Apple to easily make it so that if I install say DeepSeek that DS can then handle all the tasks that Siri would be doing while integrated in the OS? That sounds like just rediculous.
    • For ray-tracing, the Radeon RX 9070 XT is better than the GeForce RTX 5070, but worse than the GeForce RTX 5070 Ti The Radeon RX 9070 XT is similar to the GeForce RTX 5070 Ti in rasterization Both AMD and NVIDIA have had serious issues with drivers in the past, so I can't say that one is better or worse than the other. Yes. AMD has better support Linux than does NVIDIA. Use Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) to uninstall NVIDIA's drivers before installing AMD's drivers. That's up to you. Supplies of memory is unpredictable because AI using up a lot of memory. As a result, there is a lot of volatility in video card prices.
