What Applications do you HAVE to have after a fresh Linux install?

Recommended Posts

The first thing I do after updating a new install is get the applications I really 'need' to complete the install.

Unless already installed by default, I make sure to install the following...

AWN

Cairo Dock (If AWN is not available)

Docky (If AWN and Cairo Dock are not available)

Rar/Unrar

7Zip

gThumb

GIMP

Firefox

Google Chrome

Qbittorrent

Gnomebaker

VLC

SMplayer

Openshot

PiTiVi (If Openshot is not available)

DeaDBeeF

Clementine

Soundconverter

EasyTag

Audacity

LibreOffice

Abiword (If LibreOffice is not available)

I don't keep a list, but from the top of my head:

Firefox

VLC

7Zip

Gimp

GParted

VirtualBox

Gimp

Blender

RecordMyDesktop

Pidgin

OpenJDK

TweakTool

This is a terminal bit (of course) on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, after adding the medibuntu.org repo.

sudo apt-get install w64codecs libdvdcss2 non-free-codecs keepassx kmymoney audacity vlc wine ubuntu-restricted-extras solfege scribus scribus-doc scribus-template xaralx xaralx-examples xaralx-svg p7zip-full arj lha unace ncompress pdfsam rar gimp gimp-data gimp-data-extras cabextract aptitude basket tofrodos dos2unix inkscape picard gftp mencoder soundconverter convertall emacs23 gftp-gtk planner mencoder dia-gnome fontforge mscore inkscape agave granule ntp lbreakout2 audacity gramps antiword brightside potrace dvdrip dvdrip-doc gparted cheese mp3splt ardour vlc mozilla-plugin-vlc freemind rawstudio bibus pspp avidemux wordplay asunder devede wordnet-base wordnet-sense-index wordnet glabels acidrip bluefish disc-cover winff artha flashplugin-installer rednotebook tuxguitar transmageddon fontforge-extras mp3splt-gtk acetoneiso gedit-plugins fotoxx qalculate-gtk fortune-mod fortunes fortunes-es fortunes-es-off fortunes-debian-hints gnome-games pingus chromium-browser ogmrip gnome-alsamixer gnote bsdgames bsdgames-nonfree emacs-goodies-el gnome-games-extra-data recordmydesktop gtk-recordmydesktop rakarrack gtans tetzle jhead bleachbit libreoffice-base glom lyx jokosher pyrenamer gbrainy gnome-hearts pinta hydrogen hydrogen-drumkits lmms rosegarden praat album chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra libgnome-speech7 mplayer-doc pdfmod screenruler gtkorphan openclipart-libreoffice k3b cups-pdf krecipes numlockx kolourpaint4 stellarium guake dosbox easytag playitslowly gxine icedax tagtool id3tool mpg321 synaptic preload gdebi samba libpam-smbpass meld verbiste freeplane v4l2ucp patchage mesa-utils compizconfig-settings-manager pokerth beneath-a-steel-sky flight-of-the-amazon-queen gimp-plugin-registry lsb-core kbounce gnome-schedule ekiga abiword gnumeric prboom luckybackup smplayer

:)

I run all my "linuxes" in virtualbox, so I don't need that many apps. Just need stuff for designing themes, icons and stuff.

After an install of Gnome it's basically just this:

pacman -Sy gedit file-roller unrar p7zip unzip gnome-terminal gimp inkscape eog opera yaourt gtk-engines gtk-engine-murrine

And then some packages from AUR:

freetype2-infinality, fontconfig-infinality, awf

Chromium

MusicBrainz Picard (Use this first to tag and then EasyTag for manual/custom changes)

Htop

Calibre

Inkscape (Also GIMP, has been mentioned in other posts)

Handbrake

VIM (vi improved)

projectM

XBMC (If your PC is used for everything!)

BleachBit

Banshee (Has been causing a few problems in ARCH Linux of late, but can be fixed. It still has the best layout of all Linux Music Players, for me anyway!)

That's my list. :)

I build my packages and they are as follows:

Openbox + all the goodies (obconf, obapps, obmenu, obshutdown, tint2, etc...)

VLC

Geany + plugins

Dropbox

Claws Mail + extra plugins

Evince

Unrar

P7zip

Conky + Lua

scrot

tp_smapi

Thinkfan

sbopkg

src2pkg

I'm sure I missed a few.

  • 2 weeks later...

Terminator

Google Chrome

Pidgin

VLC

Eclipse

Then I immediately uninstall LibreOffice and GIMP because they're so awful and just take up space

If those are part of the default install then why remove them? you could break something.

Most people covered 90% of what I install only addition is--

TEAMVIEWER

http://www.teamviewer.com/en/download/linux.aspx

Since now they have a Linux version- Which allows me to connect to my desktop remotely -- as well as work on other peoples computers while still in Linux instead of having to boot into Windows.

(In no order)

gufw

preload

ttf-droid

openjdk-7-jre

icedtea7-plugin

compizconfig-settings-manager

ubuntu-tweak

google-chrome-stable

libvdpau1

libdvdcss2

p7zip-full

xfonts-terminus

Firefox

Gimp + DDS plugin

Blender

nifSkope + niftools

PlayonLinux

winetricks to install Steam > New Vegas > Skyrim > Fallout 3

Steam for Linux

Adobe Flash

w32codecs or w64codecs depending.

Openbox

Firefox

aMSN

XChat

Flash (although I didn't last time, and haven't missed it yet...)

VLC

gedit

7Zip

Gimp

Rhythmbox (although I'm almost on the Banshee bandwagon )

Hmm... I feel like I'm forgetting something, may edit this list later.

    • The only reason I want to know where you from is because if you are not from the U.K, then why should you care what we in the U.K do or don't do? Racist I am not, I am fed up with the amount coming over here and feel they can come over here and think we need to support them. Do you know how much it costs this country to support these people coming over here? Even when we give them a place to live it is not good enough. We had a barge that was being used to house immigrants, oh but that was not good enough. A mate said to me at the time, when he was homeless, he would have been happy to live on the barge, instead of ending up sleeping on a bench on the beach. I am not scared to say what my family heritage is, unlike you who is scared to say where they are from or where they live. Father side U.S, mother side Wales, still have family living in the U.S. A mate who sadly died a few years ago, had a load of people from different races recording in his studio, I got on with all of them. Skin colour don't bother me, where they are from don't bother me. Religion don't bother me as long as they don't push it onto me and it is not crazy stuff. I am not religious. But if you are not living in the U.K, then why should you care if we are in the E.U or not? This the problem, too many people poking their noses into where it don't belong. But you believe what you believe, if you think I am racist, then be it, I really do not care. Just grow a pair
    • If he hasn't been able to figure that out, then why is he obsessed with tariffs? Because that's one of the most prominent tools to level the playing field when you have high cost of labor.
    • Microsoft released Windows 11 KB5102558, KB5095615 Setup and Recovery updates by Sayan Sen This past week Microsoft released the newest preview update (C-release) under KB5095093. Alongside those, Microsoft also released new dynamic updates. For those who may not know, dynamic updates bring improvements to the Windows Recovery process in the form of Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) updates, which are also called Safe OS updates. The dynamic updates also affect the Setup file binaries in the form of Setup updates. These Dynamic Update packages are meant to be applied to existing Windows images prior to their deployment. Dynamic Updates also help preserve Language Pack (LP) and Features on Demand (FODs) content during the upgrade process. VBScript, for example, is currently an FOD on Windows 11 24H2. This time both recovery and setup updates were released for Windows 11. The company writes: "KB5095186: Safe OS Dynamic Update for Windows 11, version 26H1: June 23, 2026 This update makes improvements to the Windows recovery environment (WinRE). After installing this update, the WinRE version installed on the device should be 10.0.28000.2335. KB5102558: Setup Dynamic Update for Windows 11, versions 24H2 and 25H2: June 23, 2026 This update makes improvements to Windows setup binaries or any files that setup uses for feature updates in Windows 11, version 24H2 and Windows 11, version 25H2. KB5095615: Safe OS Dynamic Update for Windows 11, versions 24H2 and 25H2: June 23, 2026 This update makes improvements to the Windows recovery environment (WinRE). After installing this update, the WinRE version installed on the device should be 10.0.26100.8737." Microsoft notes that both the Recovery and Setup updates will be downloaded and installed automatically via the Windows Update channel.
    • The high cost of labor and operating within the US. Donald hasn't been able to figure that out--pathetic.
