Fish
I hope that with next gen consoles, we get developers who are able to put more into the worlds, animations, and behavior of items/npc's in the games. I fully expect to see next-gen versions of all the current popular titles, which imo is reason enough not to jump too early. To be frank, I'm sick to death of sequals. I realise it's an easy cash-cow for developers, so why wouldn't they, and it's almost a given that we'll see the usual suspects line-up on PS4. I'll give PS4 time to mature before I make a decision. The new hardware could (or at least should) promise a more in-depth experience, and I too am looking forward to that, but I want to see the boundries of "gaming" pushed forward, not just the same old, same old but with better graphics. Yogurtmaster
But as others have said, why not just put the disk in your PS3 instead? Where does it say that you have to get rid of your PS3 in order to buy a PS4? Not saying that your idea doesn't have merit - it does - just don't see why you would want backwards compatibilty tbh, when you've already got real actual hardware that can play your games without any of the issues concerning additional cost of hardware, bandwidth or quality of experience. Well, because you can sell your current console and use that money to buy the next generation. I would do it with my xbox but my wife won't let me. Second, it takes up a lot of space that could be used for other things.

Or because you never owned the other hardware and want to take advantage of the games now being cheaper. I never owned a Wii, so a Wii U's BC is a selling point for me. I never owned a DS, so the 3ds' BC was a selling point for me.
soniqstylz
I think this will be the first console I do not buy for a good ~6 months after release - Wanting to break away from the constant early adopters beta testing role, and lack of games. I have a fairly big PS3 backlog, and next year will only add more (Last of Us, Beyond, and whatever else is to come). Bioshock God of War Dead Space 3 Sly Cooper 4 GTA 5 etc. etc.

neoadorable
backwards compatibility is nearly assured on both new consoles, don't worry. games won't be 15GB. more like 50GB. this will keep physical media alive a little longer, but i'm downloading 20GB-30GB games from Steam (Max Payne 3, AC3, etc.) and it only takes about 30-40 mins. That's very acceptable. And Shakey the next consoles will make your PS3 look/feel like a PS2 at best...I doubt you'll be able to resist for very long
+Eternal Tempest MVC Posted December 2, 2012 MVC Share Posted December 2, 2012 Wait, what? Are you saying the removal of hardware emulation on the PS3 didn't reduce the manufacturing cost of the PS3? :s Removed to push PS3 sales, cost saving minor - http://kotaku.com/31...r-cost-measures According to the Wall Street Journal's paraphrasing of SCEA boss Jack Tretton, the removal of PS2 backward compatibility and other components isn't "dramatically reducing Sony's cost of manufacturing" on Sony's behemoth console.Instead, the handicapping of the PS3 was part of an effort to "encourage buyers of the entry-level PlayStation 3 to purchase more games designed specifically for the new system." If only there were some other ways of doing that outside of ripping out the PS3's ability to play PS2 games better than an actual PS2 in so many cases. neoadorable
Yogurt, no link and no proof per se, just common sense and hearing things from people in the industry. common sense because this time it will be even easier to implement, i believe. Plus what T said is the perfect answer. when PS4 comes out your PS3 won't mysteriously stop working. Unless Sony remote brick them all somehow... Plus what T said is the perfect answer. when PS4 comes out your PS3 won't mysteriously stop working. Unless Sony remote brick them all somehow... backwards compatibility is most likely not going to happen with the PS4 because of the fact that Sony's pretty much confirmed that their switching to a x86 cpu over the custom cell processor used in the ps3ps3 support would have to be emulated unless they included both CPUs and that would drive the price up quite a bit because the cell processor that Sony used was custom Am I the only one that really doesn't consider backwards compatibility a key feature? If I have old games to play, I have the old console too quite a few people consider it a key feature because they'll trade in their old system (at a limited time higher value) in order to not have to pay as much for the new system (aka college students and others that don't have the most money)
AnotherITguy
The problem with different Generation consoles is that they have been flip flopping architectures, it happened with the XBOX too, now there are rumors the xbox is going back to X86 as well! Motoko.
This is funny, Sony won't be calling it the "Playstation 4". The number 4 has a negative connotation in Japan associated death. There most likely won't be any PPC BC support.

I always thought the Japanese, while respecting their heritage, weren't superstious. Perhaps it won't influence the naming convention of the next PlayStation? Or are you talking about the superstitious bit? It was just something I read somewhere. Still, not exactly speculation as much as it is reputation. Who said anything about ditching the PlayStation branding. Were were talking about the next iteration and whether it will be "4" or if it'll be something else. It will still be "Playstation", but it mightn't be "Playstation 4" for the exact reason you mentioned. Four is pronounced "shi" which is the same pronunciation as death. Nine is pronounced "ku" which has the same pronunciation as agony or torture. http://japanese.about.com/blqow7.htm
D. S. Veteran Posted December 10, 2012 Veteran Share Posted December 10, 2012 Sony would certainly ditch one of the most powerful and recognizable brands in the world just because of a anumber it chooses to append to each console generation. They'll just call it PlayStation Life to go along with Vita and be done with it. Fish
It would be commercial suicide to drop the Playstation brand. I wouldnt be surprised to see it named Playstation 4 everywhere except in Japan.
