Microsoft sells more 360s on Black Friday than Wii U sells at Launch

Wow, a console that costs less than the Wii U which was probably heavily discounted for BF sells more than a brand new expensive console with a limited amount of units available for sale, who'd have thunk.......

The 360 is also 7 years old. A new console should be out selling something that old.

a) Heavily discounted old console with massive back catalogue

b) Limited stock Wii U, just like any console launch they don't have enough to go around.

Wii U is hardly limited stock. I see it everywhere and so do my friends in other parts of the country.

Here in Austin I see WiiU's on the shelf... to be honest, I don't think all the parents really know that the Wii U is even out. (compared to the fanaticism of the wii a few years ago)

Also, the 360 itself isn't really that heavily discounted for how old it is. You're still looking at 249.00 + for new retail packages and heck, a lot of the holiday bundles cost the same price as the Wii U - 349.

There are plenty of them at all the stores around here. Craigslist is also filled with a million and a half people that are trying to make a few $ reselling them, but won't.

Nintendo is just doing a horrible time advertising it. I see commercials for Wii games, but the console itself is an afterthought at the very end.

this is obviously YMMV type of deal. Here on the east coast (specifically NJ) is very hard to come by. Toys R Us, Gamestop, Walmart, Target and Best Buy rarely have any in store (when they do its 2 or 3 of the basic console). Getting them online isnt as difficult but still a crap shoot (feel free to head over to bestbuy.com where both versions are sold out online - which I assume is nationwide)

edit - walmart.com also sold out

toysrus.com - only selling basic online or deluxe with 2 game bundles (scam)

target.com - appears to be in stock

gamestop.com - sold out

That's convenient, there could be any number of reasons, maybe pre orders didn't come to pick them up, etc...

Gamestop has completely sold out and are cancelling people on the waiting list, WiiU has also sold out in the UK a week before its even due out in the shops, just because there are a few on a shelf somewhere doesn't mean they aren't selling.

Didn't say they aren't selling. I just mentioned the Xbox still sold a ton more and "has legs" :)

It's good to see things aren't working out for the scalpers. Prices on eBay are the same as retail and when you figure in eBay's cut from the sale they aren't making anything from it.

They seem to be keeping supply up better this time. Walmart was sold out here last week but yesterday they had 3-4 of each model back in stock again.

Yeah it seems to be that all the good deals on Black Friday and big Christmas items get bought by people looking to make a profit. Sadly. Strange amount of unopened TVs showed up on there this weekend. I bet I could email one of the people trying to sell the Wii U and offer them a $10-20 profit and they'd probably accept it. I do wish Craigslist and Ebay would monitor for those and remove the ads.

Maybe they were out of stock a while ago at launch, but that simply isn't true. If you head on over to www.neogaf.com you will see that people are saying (all over the nation) that it's easy to go anywhere and find them.

You might think this is anecdotal evidence, but with so many people all in different locations being able to find one easily. At launch this is true. Now this isn't a problem.

I dont care much.. I already have mine as I pre-ordered a month before launch. I JUST checked (meaning TODAY, not at launch) the online sites for the largest retailers and as you saw, only 1 actually had the deluxe model in stock. so if you would rather take people's word on what they saw in store over actual proof, then so be it. I dont have a horse in this race. The websites I provided are nationwide... if stock was so easily available... stores like walmart/bestbuy/toysrus would have the option to pick up in store.

back on topic - I find it amazing that 750k 360s can still be sold... who doesnt have one at this point?

a) Heavily discounted old console with massive back catalogue

b) Limited stock Wii U, just like any console launch they don't have enough to go around.

And an economy that isn't what it was when 360 was first released.

However I suspect many of those 360 buyer's were also previous owner's and buying again for a lot of various reasons. Probably any new consumer's were the kids who got old enough to finally talk mom into getting it for xmas.

So by that comparison the Wii U will out sell the new Xbox on launch week?

It's amazing numbers anyway you look at it and means a **** load more software sales for them.

    • Linux 7.2's first release candidate gets off to a good start by Paul Hill Credit: Larry Ewing It has been a few weeks since the release of Linux 7.1, and in that time, the Linux 7.2 merge window has been open, where developers can submit their features and patches ready for the upcoming release. That window is now shut, and the release candidate phase has begun so that new features can be tested and further fixes applied. According to the founder of Linux, Linus Torvalds, this week’s release candidate looks “reasonably normal”. Although we are super early in the release candidates, this is a good sign as it makes it more likely that an eighth release candidate will not be needed. Torvalds even mentioned that the update’s stats are only larger than they really are because there was another AMD header drop with a third of the patch just being AMD GPU register definitions, which aren’t big changes but make the code contributed look larger overall. In addition to this, he noted that just over half the patch is drivers, even when excluding the AMD register dump. The rest of the changes are spread out over architecture updates, tooling, documentation, and core kernel updates. In the next week, Torvalds says that he will be chilling out, taking the week “mostly off”. Despite this, he will be reading emails and keeping up with things, so if he is slow responding, now you know why. He said he is hoping for a calm week, but we will just have to see if the second release candidate is actually like that. We should expect seven or eight release candidates before Linux 7.2 is released, so expect it around the end of August. If you missed it a few weeks ago, be sure to check out our coverage of Linux 7.1's release.
