Computer cutting off, need help troubleshooting.

Recommended Posts

My computer has been cutting off with no warning at random intervals. It seems to happen most when I am doing something intensive, but has also happened when all the only thing running is Chrome and I am actually away from the computer.

I don't get a blue screen, or any errors. It just powers off, then turns back on.

When it boots back up I get the Windows shut down unexpectedly prompt, but other then that no errors.

Sometimes it cuts off again while booting up. This can happen several times before it gets through the boot successfully.

I have monitored CPU and GPU temps with a log, and there are no spikes or other anomalies.

Some days this will happen very frequently, other days go by without an incident.

I am pretty much stumped so I need help. It might be the PSU, but I have no way to know for sure.

Here are my system specs:

Motherboard: ASUS P8Z68-V LE

CPU: i5-2500K Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz

Memory: F3-10666CL9D-8GBRL

Video Card: GeForce GTX 560 Ti

HDD: SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 ST1000DM005

PSU: TX650 V2 650W ATX12V v2.31

OS: Windows 7 64bit

Thank you in advance for your help.

CPU overheating seems the likely culprit. I had the *exact* same thing happen to me a couple months ago.

I removed the heatsink and saw the existing thermal paste had all dried up and solidified flat stone-hard. Just smeared some more and the problem went away immediately after.

Do a RAM test, use MemTest86+

Even if you say you don't get BSOD it might happen so quickly that you don't see it. To disable the auto restart go to "Control Panel->System->Advanced System Settings->Advanced Tab->click Settings on "Startup and Recovery and uncheck "Automatically restart".

Another thing you could do a system scan : hit Start menu and type cmd, on result right click on it and choose "run as administrator" then type the command: sfc /scannow

You will get an idea if it tells you you have errors or problems.

I had this same issue with Windows 7 64-bit. Never happened when I was running 32-bit, and now that I've switched to Windows 8 Pro 64-bit I've yet to get one random "restart". It used to happen at random times and would go days and sometimes weeks without it happening. Then, out of nowhere it'd get 'em back-to-back.

He did mention that he check the temps for the cpu so I dont think that could be the reason.

Your best bet is to buy a new PSU and try it out. If the issue still occurs just return it so you can get your money back. However, I really think it could be the PSU and if not, than the GPU.

    • Keep in mind Intuit has lobbied like crazy to keep taxes complicated so they can continue to sell tax software. They also got caught hiding their legally mandated free version so they could release a second one that pushed countless people into charges they didn't need to pay to file. Intuit leads the charge on inventing problems so they can sell you the solution and disrespecting you in the process.
    • Oddly, there was a time that UFC games were culturally relevant, largely because of the graphics and gameplay that was different than the norm. But it seems like as the sport grew in popularity, gaming outlets stopped talking about the games.
