So did anyone figure out how to get this half assed WIndows 8 to show white text on a dark title bars on windows?

Not that I'm surprised, but releasing Windows where you can read window titles only on light themes is completely idiotic. I've tried every single thing and it's simply impossible to change the text to white so I can have dark window caption bar and dark theme?

Also, are there any other AERO like simple themes that are not butt ugly to replace this Windows 8 disaster default theme?

Use the Windows 8 Release Preview theme. It gives you the "glow" effect, where the window title text is dark against a light background, regardless of the rest of the theme colours.

Whew! At this stage in my drunkenness, I didn't tink I could type a coherent sentence.

Anyway, see here for details.

While you shouldn't HAVE to do this, grab UltraUXTheme Patcher and Windows 8 Default theme, patch the files and install the theme. You will then have the default theme with white text, for when you want a dark theme and the original for when you want dark text on a light theme.

I went one step further and made the min/max/restore buttons white as well, for that, grab Resource Hacker, open the .msstyle file, extract "STREAM -> 986 -> 0" as a .png. Use what ever image editor you like and then look for the black min/max/restore button and make paint them white, remember to save as a .png. Once saved, go back to Resource Hacker, click on the "0" and select replace resource, select your png, the RESOURCE TYPE should be "STREAM", the RESOURCE NAME is "986" and then save. Replace the original .msstyle file with the edited one and enjoy white text and white min/max buttons.

I don't know what they were thinking, not giving us the option to change the text color. Guess we desktop users better get used to getting the short end of the stick from Microsoft.

Anyway hope that helps.

Well, considering they also removed the ability to change the fonts anywhere in the system, I guess it's understandable that they'd remove the other customization abilities. It's kind of sad.

Wow, I didn't know they did that! What are they thinking? I like Windows 8 but some of this stuff is just stupid, and makes me sad that I have to edit the registry to change a font... how stupid is that? Yes, I had to search the web to find out how to do it, guess I'm lucky they didn't remove the font sizing as well.

Many thanks for this. Much appreciated. I used it and it works extremely well. I now have almost glass look black borders and title bars not to mention the start menu with readable white text.Look at my new taskbar!! :D

    • Meta explains how EU's "unlawful" ad-free choice ruling hurts users and businesses by Paul Hill Meta has decided to appeal a European Commission (EC) decision announced back on April 23 that saw the firm hit with a €200 million fine for violating the Digital Markets Act (DMA). The decision from the Commission was about the binary choice the social media firm was offering to users in the bloc - that they either see personalized ads, or pay a subscription fee to go ad-free. The EC said it wanted Meta to offer an ad-supported version with less personalization. Now, Meta has hit back at the decision, calling it incorrect and unlawful. Under the Digital Markets Act rules, big companies like Meta with significant platforms were labeled as Gatekeepers (large digital platforms with significant market power) and given specific rules to follow, including requiring GDPR consent in relation to DMA-specific personal data use for showing ads to users. Meta believes that the Commission’s April decision against Meta ignored a Grand Chamber of the European Court of Justice (CJEU) ruling from July 2023, which, according to Meta, supports offering users the choice between a subscription or receiving a free service supported by personalized ads. The social media giant believes that the EC’s decision flies in the face of the CJEU judgment and precedents and makes Meta the only company in Europe that is not allowed to use the business model in question. The company says that if it was forced to show ads with reduced personalization, then users, advertisers, and platforms would get “poorer outcomes” - it would also likely hurt Meta’s revenues. While Meta may believe what it says, it’s not the only company operating as a Gatekeeper under the Digital Market Act, many other big tech firms are coming under increasing scrutiny as the EC tries to establish a more level playing field so that big firms don’t take advantage of smaller competitors. Meta says that the mandated Less Personalized Ads service from the EC is unviable and ignores commercial realities. It said that the LPA uses around 90% less data than personalized ads resulting in less user engagements and less sales. While users may say they do not want their data used for personalized ads, Meta believes that without personalization, user experience declines with an almost 800% rise in ads being marked as “irrelevant” or “repetitive”. It is important to note that Meta has not provided an actual number for the amount of complaints it receives. Meta also said that the LPA also leads to worse outcomes for EU advertisers with small and medium-sized enterprises most impacted. It said: Meta has called on the EC to “return to a better system of regulation” after expressing concern about a lack of consistent feedback and the shifting of “goalposts” by the Commission while Meta has tried to comply. It has called on the EC to stick to the text of the DMA and not make it about fines.

    • KB5060829: Microsoft confirms new upcoming Windows 11 24H2 feature is triggering Firewall by Sayan Sen At the end of June, Microsoft released Windows 11 setup and recovery updates (KB5062233/ KB5060843/ KB5062197/ KB5061090) following the month's non-security previews for 24H2 (KB5060829) and 23H2/22H2 (KB5060826). Today, the company has confirmed that KB5060829 is causing some troubles for systems in regards to Firewall. Microsoft says that IT admins and system admins may notice a recurring error entry in the Security event log related to Windows Firewall With Advanced Security wherein the Event Viewer records event ID 2042, labeled “Config Read Failed” with the message “More data is available” each time the device restarts. Although logged as an error, the tech giant notes that this entry does not indicate a malfunction of the Windows Firewall and as such it can be "safely ignored and disregarded," and that Windows Firewall continues to enforce rules and filter network traffic normally as intended. Microsoft assures that "there is no impact to Windows processes associated to this event." IT support teams and even general users often rely on error-level event entries to detect misconfiguration and other issues (Microsoft itself recommends you do so), so unexpected log noise can trigger unnecessary alerts like these. Interestingly, in this case, the logged event stems from an upcoming feature as Microsoft notes that the "event is related to a feature that is currently under development and not fully implemented." No additional information regarding this new feature has been provided at this time. For those who prefer a cleaner log, administrators can filter out event 2042 in Event Viewer or via PowerShell. In Event Viewer, create a custom view filtering out ID 2042 under the Security log and in PowerShell, use the Get-WinEvent -FilterHashtable parameter. Microsoft says that the team is currently working on a fix and an update will be released later. However, no ETA has been shared today. You can find the issue entry here on Microsoft's official Windows Health dashboard website.
    • Concerning the situation at XBOX (title cancellations, studio closures and firing employees): The management at MS gaming division (Booty, Spencer etc.) has to go. Money and time has been wasted in such amounts that those people have to be held accountable and better managers can take the lead. In most other businesses this would have happened ten years or so ago.
