Starting to get annoyed with my choices in PC games

Recommended Posts

After playing games for almost 18 years on the PC, I can agree with you on some levels but there are a few great games out there which you've yet to enjoy. Tribes: Ascendance is particularly good, and although has a few noobs, it's the same as the old days of Quake/QW where you'd always get the odd one.

Planetside 2 is worth checking out as well, I've not done myself but a few people have mentioned it. Mass Effect series is definitely worth a go, and I think it's worth you spending a little bit at the end of year sale in Steam where they'll be pretty cheap. I find that series quite similar in some ways to Fallout NV.

Well, I bought Afterfall: InSanity and Singularity. So I'm atleast broadening my gaming experience.

You want to broaden your horizon on games but have a really strict set of rules.

Nowadays games don't allow access to the dev console nor are they very moddable.

If you like the Gamebryo engine, get Morrowind GOTY. That should be on steam at a decent price too.

I agree with this. Your goal and guidelines contradict each other. To be honest, I dont know what you want. I will tell you some PC games I've enjoyed though. Quake 3 Arena and Unreal Tournament 3. Both of them have console access and plenty of people are still online for Quake 3. UT3 not some much but you can do some fun stuff with bots offline and find 1 or 2 games going out of the hundreds of empty servers.

The industry has pretty much switched primarily to (military) first person shooters. I dont really like all the copycats going on, I'd really just like an original variety of games that are just aiming and shooting at things. Those 2 are my recommendation though. If you don't like them, then honestly you're going to have to be more specific.

Try something totally different like Civ 5 or C&C (but not generals, that's terrible)

Man, everything but Generals is terrible. I'm still sad that the coming C&C game won't be Generals 2 (and hoping it'll have that content anyway.)

(Actually I take that back somewhat, the Red Alert series was good too.)

I bought a couple new games. Afterfall: InSanity and Singularity. Am good to go for awhile. Thanx.

Am playing Singularity and Afterfall: InSanity now.

Let me know if Afterfall is any good. I kept meaning to check on it but never did.

It's not bad from the little I have played of it. Mainly playing Singularity right now.

I loved Singularity, not many games hold my attention for more than a few minutes but I was waking up and loading up the game before checking my emails for that game until I clocked it

I'm actually stck in Singularity right now. I'm at the point where I have to click a button to raise a door and then hit the door with the TMD to hold the door up. I tried for over an hour last night and gave up. I know I will get it sooner or later.

I can vaguely remember having to do something like that, is it where there are 3 buttons on the floor you have to run across to open the doors and there are 3 castle gate type metal doors you have to sprint through (maybe only 1 door)?

Can sorta remember having to use a sprint ability to make it in time if I`m remembering right

iirc I got stuck there too for ages

This forum allow you do edit your posts? I made a typo in my last post and meant to say I like a variety of games that aren't just shooting things.

My next best recommendation would be to download a bunch of game demos and see which ones you like. Nothing like the old trial and error method to see which games you like.

Oh I see. It probably only lets me edit within like the first 5 minutes after posting.

Grrr! No, not that point. Spoilers! LOL! The spot I'm talking about, is where in one room you have 1 button, you have to click it, then run around a wall and set your TMD time bubble, to hold a door open, otherwise, then door slides back down. I can only get it to hold at a very low point. Too low to crawl under.

haha it might be a completely different game I`m remembering so maybe not spoilers lol

I don't remember that point exactly it was a while ago I played it last, but can't you set the TMD time bubble 'before' pressing the button ?

Tried that too. But not go. By the time I get back, the time dilation has ended.

I'm wondering if you've played old DOS RPGs like the Ultima series, and some other games I could recommend if you haven't. I like newer games like Skyrim but often I enjoy going back to playing the classics.

Yes I have. But I really don't want to go back to using dosbox or whatever is being used now. As for Skyrim, it's one of the ones I'm now bored with if you read the actual OP. But thanx Brian.

Try Black Ops II , Lo Tec. I know you don't FPS,s, but this game is great. Best COD game yet IMHO.

I would, but it's a bit over my price range right now Brother. I just purchased two games, plus an SSD and gcard. The hardware should be on it's way.

Ah, a small memory of having to use it on the button and not the door comes to mind, keeps the button pushed for longer

I will try that. But I was watching a walkthrough on youtube and they were using it on the door.

Have you checked out The Walking Dead series?

No. I can't afford the 5 episodes yet and I really don't want to just get one.

I also want to get DayZ standalone. But it's still in dev status. So I don't even know a price tag on it yet.

I will try that. But I was watching a walkthrough on youtube and they were using it on the door.

I think it's been too long since I played it so just guessing really, yea walkthroughs are a better idea

Can you post the link to that walkthrough? It might remind me

Here, this is a diff one. It starts at about the 5min mark. This one shows a better way. Will try it this way. Didn't know I could use the TMD time dilation through the window like that.

Yea I'd say that way looks like it should work :p

It definitely has been too long, I wouldn't have remembered that part ever

Might have to reinstall it, brings back fond memories :)

Wha?! Surely the only explanation for this comment is that you're much younger than me!

    • I like Tidal, but it still does not control devices from the mobile/app and still no surround support. And yeah re: above comment I still get a lot of network errors and I am on a 4/4 Gbit Fiber connection.
    • Aren`t "security features" and "AI model that can see your screen" a tad diametric!
    • Samsung, Amazon extend 990 PRO 2TB NVMe SSD deal beyond Prime Day 2026 by Sayan Sen Recently, we had Amazon's Prime Day 2026 sales wherein there were several great deals including on SSDs. One of those discounted components was the Samsung 990 PRO SSD as the 2TB variant of it was selling for $370, a very good price after a long time. Although that deal was supposed to expire today, Amazon has now extended that sale further (purchase link under the specs table down below). The 990 PRO is a PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSD and still one of the fastest drives available today for under $400. Speaking of fast, sequential reads and writes are rated at 7450 MB/s and 6900 MB/s, respectively. The random throughputs for reads and writes are 1400K IOPS and 1550K IOPS, respectively. The 990 PRO is based on Samsung's 7th Gen V-NAND flash, and it too is TLC. It packs 2 gigs of LPDDR4 DRAM cache, which helps the random performance. The endurance rating for this is 1200 TBW (terabytes written), which should be sufficient for most users. The Samsung 990 PRO is compatible with the PlayStation 5, but if you are going to use the 990 PRO on a PC, check out the Samsung Magician app that lets you track your drive's health, update its firmware, customize various settings, and more. The technical specs of the Samsung 990 PRO 2TB are given in the table below: Specification Value Form Factor M.2 2280 Interface PCIe Gen 4.0 x4, NVMe 2.0 NAND Flash Samsung V-NAND TLC Controller Samsung In-house Controller Cache Memory Samsung 2GB Low Power DDR4 SDRAM Sequential Read Speed Up to 7,450 MB/s Sequential Write Speed Up to 6,900 MB/s Random Read (4KB, QD32) Up to 1,400,000 IOPS Random Write (4KB, QD32) Up to 1,550,000 IOPS Random Read (4KB, QD1) Up to 22,000 IOPS Random Write (4KB, QD1) Up to 80,000 IOPS Operating Temperature 0°C to 70°C Reliability (MTBF) 1.5 Million Hours Endurance 1,200 TBW (Total Bytes Written) Get it at the link below: Samsung 990 PRO SSD 2TB NVMe SSD (MZ-V9P2T0B/AM): $369.99 (Sold and Shipped by Amazon US) Good to know This Amazon deal is U.S. specific, and not available in other regions unless specified.
