Half Life 3: A Linux Exclusive

Recommended Posts

If anyone had any doubt about the commitment of Valve for Linux, here is the answer, a warning to Microsoft and its latest Windows 8. The company has announced the exclusive launch of Half Life 3 for Linux .

This was announced during the Ubuntu Developer Summit by Drew Bliss, an employee of the company, later confirmed by Gabe Newell, head of Valve, who consolidates the position which I already had announced a few months ago, Valve commitment Linux expense of Windows 8.

...that is possibly the worst attempt at passing Engrish off as an "official statement."

Besides the absurdity of, oh I don't know, neglecting the many existing Windows Vista/7 users with this move. (Oh and OS X, can't forget those guys too)

And even then there's no smart reason they'd shoot themselves in the foot.

Foot? More like a bazooka in the face. I don't care what operating system you love, deliberately cutting yourself off of hundreds of millions of potential sales just for spite is an absolutely retarded decision from a financial standpoint. If they want to go Linux exclusive that's their right of course, just like its my right to toss Steam into the garbage.. I won't do business with a company that'll arbitrarily drop support for an entire range of an OS at the drop of a hat just because he has some inane outrage. Linux as an option sure, by all means, but exclusive? Highly doubtful.

This is a joke. Never going to happen. Just a blog trying to get views.

This x1000. Would not happen in a million years.

Yes, Gabe has made his disdain for the new Windows publicly known, but all that means if they will not be developing games for the Windows Store.

Steam itself still runs perfectly normal as a stand-alone app on Windows 8, so would they really not release it through Steam just because they dislike the Windows Store?

Absolutely not. This article is a classic example of someone purposely writing fiction in order to get some page views. Nothing more.

Maybe it will be a Linux exclusive for a certain period of time then come to Windows/OS X?

With that logic, Portal 2, Counter-strike Global Offensive, and Dota 2 would've been Mac exclusives if their disdain of Windows was that high.

They're doing this to punish Windows 8. All those games were released when Windows 7 was king.

You should of used you're brain.

Oh, so now your personally attacking me because you don't like what's on your screen. That makes so much sense. Nice English too. /s

Demanding the use of common sense is now considered personal attack. I guess you were offended?

Source? It's probably just a butt-hurt site that says it is...

You are asking for a source? The comments against your own source say that this is a hoax. Do you seriously think that if this was confirmed news (or even a realistic rumour), that this wouldn't be plastered all over every tech website in existence?

    • Hello, Christian Maas' XVI32 is a nice (and very small) hex editor. Speaking of hex editors, many years ago a colleague and I who both worked at Tribal Voice managed to edit a copy of the company's PowWow instant messaging client to make it behave better now that all of its lookup servers and other server-side tech was gone.  The program didn't support NAT (RFC-3022 was introduced in January 2001, the same time Tribal Voice was shuttered), but it still worked okay if you manually set up port-forwarding on your router.  The server at http://powwow.jazy.net/ hosts a copy (usual warnings about downloading and running untrusted code from random internet servers apply). I occasionally use some tools like Funduc Software's Search and Replace and Application Mover when I need to make mass-edits to text-based files or move programs with a hard-coded installation directories, respectively.  When I need to figure out the exact LCD panel inside of a laptop, EnTech Taiwan's Monitor Asset Manager is my go-to tool for that purpose. JD Design's website (now hosted on github.io) has a number of interesting freeware and shareware utilities.  I used to use their TouchPro utility to set the file timestamps on software I was mastering to match its version number (e.g., version 3.00 of a program had all of its files dates set to 3:00AM, and so forth). Karenware has a number of interesting freeware utilities, too. Regards, Aryeh Goretsky
    • I still use HexChat! Not really as ancient as the 1994 AutoCAD above my post, but I have never found anything better to replace it. Yes we still operate an IRC server https://www.neowin.net/irc/ 😛
    • At work we still have a couple of people that use a version of AutoCAD LT purchased in 1994. This predates Windows 95 and works fine on versions of Windows up to XP. Its long since run in an locked down isolated XP VM, accessible via RDP. I did install LibreCAD for them, however they said it was just too different to get to grips with. In all fairness one of them is now 75 and the other is almost 60.
    • On my music making (non internet) PC Sony Acid Pro 7.0 Adobe Audition 2015 Korg Legacy Collection Windows 7 SP1
    • Anyway to download these versions without being on the Experimental builds?
