The Secret World MMO drops subscription model

Recommended Posts

Just a heads up: The Secret World MMO has dropped the subscription model from the game.

So now you buy the game and you can play all you want. Conversely players who have already purchased the game can now return for free (should have received an email).

FunCom will continue to make money from the game via purchasable in game items and content packs.

I actually quite liked the story and some of the gameplay mechanics so am looking forward to being able to finish the main story. It is pretty amazing how quickly new mmos are dropping off though, can't help but wonder if people are just fatigued of them.

I really wanted to try this, but as I was playing SWTOR and The Secret World was a very different game system and unproven IP, their marketing materials just couldn't sway me. I ended up switching to Rift and have been having a blast with that.

But now that TSW is no longer sub-based, I'll probably look a little harder at trying it out. The story and setting do interest me very much and the gameplay is very different compared to the traditional MMOs I play.

It's still $15 on Amazon I think. A friend just bought it a few hours ago.

There are times the gameplay is frustrating and one of the factions seems excessively goofy, but the overall package is fantastic.

I'm sure it's a good game, but I just can't afford to spend $30 right now, not to mention I just don't have it. And I don't get my SS until the beginning of the month next month. Meh, I wish they had a 10 day trial or friend invite system so I could at least play it longer than 3 days.

Steam has it on sale right now for 25% off, so I picked it up for $22.49 yesterday (18 GB download :| ) so I left it on overnight.

It finished this morning so I'll get some time in once I get home from work today.

Nice! Definitely wouldn't mind giving it a shot - was just turned off by the subscription so went with GW2 instead. Still think I'll wait for another sale at $20 or below though. Seems like the story wasn't what I perceived it to be (from watching playthroughs on youtube).

My friend bought me the game since it was on sale. But my download is 40 gigs (holy schmoley!) so uh, yeah! Either way, got my account set up and linked to Steam and I'm ready to go once it's done downloading. Though I assume there will be some patching to do once I launch the game client itself.

That was what I saw in Steam before I went to bed, so there could have been more (different chunks), but it was only a small patch once I launched the game (only a few hundred MB) so hopefully that's all you had as well.

Been playing the hell out of it over the holiday break and am really loving it. The story and the world are just fantastic. And I really love the investigation missions, so much fun trying to decipher the clues and solve each tier. I started as a Templar which has been quite interesting. I've recently gone back and created a character for Illuminati and Dragon, but haven't gone much beyond getting to Kingsmouth with them.

I've struggled a bit with the concept of the "deck-building" for a build. I'm a longtime CCG player, so I get the concept, but trying to apply it to a video game is giving me fits for some reason. Part of that I think is just not being able to get what I need/want for the build without more SP. I think I've figured out a progression though and am running along nicely now on an AR/Blade build for soloing. I've just hit Transylvania. Luckily at this point, I'm gaining SP and AP at a much higher rate (though of course, you need a higher rate later in the game) and with the free points, I've been eye-ing some of the AP/SP boosts in the item shop as well. According to what I've read, they basically double your gain rate.

My character's name is Texa on Daemon, so look me up sometime :D

    • Ridiculous claim that the labor cost difference of $6000 annually would increase cost per phone by $200. The employees produce 3 phones per month or what?
