Your GOTY 2012?

Recommended Posts

None they were all garbage, Mass Effect, Far Cry, Assassins Creed, they all fell short in my estimation.

I enjoyed some games this year such as Kingdoms of Amalur and Sleeping Dogs but they are hardly GOTY quality.

Probably Skyrim...

Again... :-P

Skyrim was 2011.

I'd start with Mass Effect 3, because whether or not the ending was all that (I didn't really care anymore, it was too full of finding random crap in enemy occupied systems) the multiplayer stands out from the crowd. It's a bit of a money pit if you choose to spend on it, but it's still great.

Then I'd go with The Secret World, proving once again that the surest way to lose money is to make something unique. Hopefully they'll be able to make money with their new pricing plan.

Sleeping Dogs was great, aside from the weird vehicle handling. The DLC packs seem to be a bit overboard, but whatever works.

Max Payne 3 makes the list because it's nice to have a main character that human beings can actually identify with somewhat.

I'm going with the Walking Dead as well for my GOTY. I think I posted as such right after finishing Ep 5.

I'm holding off on my runner up until I play Dishonored, which I bought during Black Friday but have yet to open up.

Skyrim was 2011.

Hence, "Again".

For me it is Crusader Kings 2. Granted, its pretty much a niche-genre game and won't get the mass support but this is really a fantastic game, Paradox did a great job. Add the expansions and some of the community mods (AGoT!), I have literally sunk days and nights into this damn game.

Runner up for me would be XCom. Finally a turn-based game I could get into...but you have to play Ironman to really get the most of it. I enjoyed Spec Ops, really an underrated game in my opinion.

Walking Dead is a great game, i was really blown away by it, although it's hard to pick a winner this year as there has been some great games.

Unfinished Swan and Tokyo Jungle were good games as I Am Alive, i also loved Forza Horizon's as it was a great idea to expand the racer onto the streets.

For me it would have to be Max Payne 3, a series i already loved, coupled with great graphics and excellent gameplay and story, it was a real blast.

thanks for starting this Larry, bought so many games this year yet played so little of them hahaha. So it has to be something I actually finished...either Mass Effect 3 or Max Payne 3. Or Black Ops 2, for being so surprising and loaded with content. The Line was a huge surprise, as well, loved it so much for coming out of nowhere like that.

Bottom line: Mass Effect 3, it's just the most intricate of all of these so it wins by default, plus the MP was a surprisingly amazing addition, and the DLC so far has been good, not brilliant but memorable.

and there's so many negative people here...2012 sucked ass for me personally to the point where I basically don't really want to live anymore, but to say it was a bad year for gaming? give me a ****ing break, it was an incredible year for gaming, the best since 2007 for sure, maybe even better!

lol I thought ME3 was the biggest disappointment of 2012. It was terrible (IMO)

I am *positive* I posted here? Hmmm, maybe I was at work and closed the tab before posting - that's actually quite likely.

I don't have a flatout GOTY, but I have a list of highlights if that's any good. They are as follows:

Dishonored - For just being a little bit 'different' and enthrawling.

Natural Selection 2 - Because it was, and is fantastic... and gave me a nostalgia hard-on circa AvP '99.

Quantum Conundrum - I really enjoyed this one, it was like having Braid turned First-Person - loved all the different variables you needed to manipulate.

Borderlands 2 - Some nice little touches to spruce the gameplay up from the original, but the story? And the characters? And dialog? ****ing tremendous. Handsome Jack is easily villain of the year. Shame the DLC sucks.

Hotline Miami - Best ?5 I've ever spent. Cracking game, loved the music and it had an addictability similar to a hardcore platformer - so much about muscle-memory and reflexes.

Far Cry 3 - Crammed a fair few hours into this bad-boy. I haven't bothered with the multiplayer yet, but the singleplayer is fantastic. They've looked at FC2, saw what didn't work, and either fixed it or scrapped it.

The Walking Dead - I did not think i would enjoy this game at all - I haven't played a P+C since like Broken Sword 2 on the PSX, and even then I wasn't exactly enamoured with it. However, this game possessed a decent story and some interesting mini-games.

I have to disagree with everybody listing ME3 as a GOTY. I thought that was the biggest crock of **** I've played in a long time; graphically it was beautiful, but the gameplay was pure Copy + Paste garbage - which is a shame as I really enjoyed ME1 (due to it being identical to KOTOR/KOTOR 2/Jade Empire) and thought ME2 had a great balance of Combat vs RPG-lite vs Story.

Honourable Mentions:

Max Payne 3 - Actually smashed my expectations to pieces. I was quite skeptical about this release, but it served up the exact gameplay I was looking for from another MP title.

Planetside 2 - An incredibly ambitious and interesting game - very much one that needs an organised group of people for maximum enjoyment, but a good game nontheless.

Football Manager 2013 - The only reason this does not make the above list is because I have not played it. I can already see from screenshots and various videos that this game will devour my life and **** out a Job Seekers Allowance booklet.

Farcry 3 for sure

Can't agree with the max payne votes, loved the first 2 the third was too many cinematics not enough shooting. Then again rockstar seems to make a habit of killing games lately. Loved all gtas except 4 and dlcs, the game actually made me not pre-order gta5 in fear its gonna be the same trainwreck.

It should. But I'm increasingly hearing comments along the lines of "I don't care if the gameplay as bad as long as it has a good story, blah, blah..."

Following this path the ideal game would just be mashing a button to advance cutscenes.

Worked for MGS4

Game of the year for me would be Dishonored. Good story, good gameplay, though it could've had better graphics.

I really want to play Far Cry 3 and ACIII but since I haven't I can't say anything about them.

Yeah I just got MP3 and I most of the time I'm playing all I can think of is I want to shoot something, not watch Max drink more.

1.Hitman Absolution (on PC)

Game of the Year 2012:

Hitman: Absolution

hitman absolution

You have to be high to even consider this NEAR GOTY. It was good but NOTHING GOTY material.

It's sad day for gaming when we've reached the point where people judge a game based on "story" and not gameplay.

Sorry but no; The story is WAY more important than the actual game play. I enjoy single player a lot better than multiplayer. As a matter of fact, its one of the reason Team Fortress 2 failed for me, it did not have any single player campaign. But I understand due to the target audience of the game.

Football Manager 2013 - The only reason this does not make the above list is because I have not played it. I can already see from screenshots and various videos that this game will devour my life and **** out a Job Seekers Allowance booklet.

Great game. I skipped 2012 but this '13 is a lot of fun. Add a few add-on packs (logos, kits, player pictures) and the game truly is addictive. Actually, FM2013 and Crusader Kings 2 could be the ultimate 'where the fuq did my life go" combo of games. Yikes.

Skyrim was 2011.

There was new DLC that came out this year though :D. And I think out of all the games I played this year, I played Skyrim the most so it gets my GOTY again ;).

Looking back, I've realised there's a hell of a lot of 2012 I still haven't got around to playing yet. So for now, my GOTY of 2012 is Borderlands 2, with Rocksmith coming in second. That'll probably change once I get around to playing Dishonored. And Sleeping Dogs. And Max Payne 3.

I'll also give an honourable mention to Tokyo Jungle, purely for being one of the most unique games in years (and also holding the rare accolade of being a download-only game that I've bought at full-price).

If you all fancy a laugh, Yahtzee's put out his top 5 best and worst of 2012. Quite a surprise what was his #1 best... http://www.escapistm...7-Top-5-of-2012

I'm not really feeling any game from 2012 was elite enough to warrant GOTY discussion.

Diablo 3 was one of the most anticipated games in a long time but failed to live up to half it's expectations (I still play it.)

Borderlands 2 was a lot of fun at the start with it's quirky writing and fresh fps + rpg style. However, I felt it lost momentum quickly, became repetitive, and I couldn't finish it.

NBA2K13 is nearly perfect as far as basketball/sport game goes. Sports games are never considered for GOTY though. The 2K sports team deserves a lot of credit. They never produce a bad game and would have easily taken over the NFL market by now if it wasn't for EA's ridiculous monopoly on the virtual NFL.

Dark Souls: Prepare to Die came out on PC in 2012. If I had to award, I'd probably go that route.

Coming into this year, I was really excited for ME3, Diablo 3, and Borderlands2. Diablo 3 was a huge let down for me. It was good, but not anywhere close to what it should have been. Borderlands 2 was great, but for some reason didn't hold my interest for very long. Since I have to pick one that came out THIS year, I guess I would say it's ME3. Even though the ending completely ruined the entire series for me, and I hate the thought of it winning an award, it was still the best game from this year that I've played.

However, I played both Skyrim and Dark Souls for the first time this year and they were both phenomenal. I think Dark Souls is the better game, because it had better gameplay. (better, proper progression). But Skyrim had better story. Each are more deserving of GOTY than anything that actually came out this year.

Actually, once I viewed that I did remember his review was glowing enough that I wanted to look at picking up the game. Once it got cheaper.

Which, if anyone cares, it's $7.50 for PC download through Amazon.

    • You pay just $100 per TB with this rare 4TB PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSD deal by Sayan Sen SSDs and GPUs are incredibly hard to get nowadays due to high pricing. Discounts are quite rare which is why we report on them as soon as we spot a good deal. For example AMD's new 9070 GRE was finally up for sale at a very good price of just $500 thanks to a special coupon. Sadly that deal is gone but if you happen to be looking for a 4TB NVMe SSD and can spend around $400 there is a really good offer on sale that you should not miss out on as TeamGroup's 4TB G50 model is on sale for that that price which means you are only paying $100 per TB, a very good deal in the current market (purchase link under the specs table down below). The TeamGroup T-FORCE G50 NVMe SSD is a PCIe Gen4 drive and as such it promises to deliver sequential read speeds of up to 5,000 MB/s, helping accelerate game loading, file transfers, and everyday computing tasks. Since this is a 4TB drive you can use it for a gaming library to take advantage of things like DirectStorage. The SSD features an InnoGrit controller and SLC caching technology to support consistent performance. An ultra-thin, patented graphene heatsink is included to aid in heat dissipation. Get it at the link below: Team Group T-FORCE G50 4TB Internal SSD (TM8FFE004T0C129): $449.99 + $50 off w/ promo code SSF69668, limited offer => $39.99 (Sold and Shipped by Newegg US) Good to know This Amazon deal is U.S. specific, and not available in other regions unless specified. • I agree. I also think Phil stayed too long. They should definitely fire whoever thought all a console platform needed was Call of Duty, Elder Scrolls, and Fallout to survive. Asha and crew are still saying they need more Elder Scrolls and Fallout games. They simply don't get it.
    • Macbook Air is an appealing option, as are plethora of Windows devices with various different CPU's
