What is a video's maximum framerate that an iPhone can play?

Recommended Posts

Hi all

Sorry for the confusing title its a difficult question to put in to words and i can't seem to find my answer in google.

Anyway, I know that the iphone can only record at 30fps, but can it play a video at 60fps or more? and what version of iphone can play what...

Also, if it is able to play 60fps video, is it just downscaling to 30? or would it just give an error that it cant be played.

Cheers :)

It can play video up to the refresh rate of the display. Since the iPhone uses an LCD I'll assume that it has a refresh rate of 60Hz. If that is the case, it can't go any faster than 60FPS as anything faster than the screen refreshed rate is wasted.

From http://www.apple.com/iphone/specs.html

Video formats supported: H.264 video up to 1080p, 30 frames per second, High Profile level 4.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format

CPU/GPU-wise, it can play videos at hundreds of FPS, but the screen likely limits it physically to 60 FPS. However, I believe iOS caps videos at 30 FPS no matter what.

the human eye sees things at 29.97fps or some silly **** cant rember where i read it so it would be pointless to do video higher

 29.97, what a coincidence! :woot: I don't even...

hahaha... are you sure its not 23.976 :p

For the record, the whole 'why bother with higher framerate due to your eyes seeing x amount of fps' is wrong.

Your eyes are used to seeing the real world which is run at infinity fps, Assuming that you are not on drugs, everything you look at will be very smooth. Electronic displays are limited to the amount of fps it can dish out. Because you can not sync your eyes to capture 29.97 frames per second with an electronic display, you will sometimes see half a drawn frame or even the same frame twice, or skip one frame out of 3 etc.... depending on how good your eyesight is, the amount of fps can vary quite a bit. So to compensate, the closer to 'real life' an electronic display is, the smoother it is. Play a game at 60fps with 60hz, then play a game at 120fps at 120hz, you will notice a huge difference.

I guess the new movie "The Hobbit" being filmed in 48FPS is a lie lol

    • draw.io Desktop 30.2.6 by Razvan Serea draw.io desktop is a downloadable security-first diagramming application that runs on Windows, MacOS and Linux. Creating diagrams in the desktop app doesn’t need an internet connection. This is useful when you are disconnected or when you must create diagrams in a highly secure environment, where data protection is of the utmost importance. When you use the draw.io desktop app, your diagrams will be stored on your local device. Because this is a stand-alone application, also designed to run offline, there are no interfaces to cloud storage platforms available. Of course, you can still store your diagrams in folders that are synchronised to your cloud storage if you wish. Easy-to-use diagram editor The draw.io apps work just like the office and drawing tools you are used to using. Drag and drop shapes from the shape libraries and drag to draw connectors between them. Drag connectors to add waypoints and set a precise shape and position, or let them reroute automatically. Double click and start typing to add a label to anything. Create tables and swimlane flows with a familiar tool. Style shapes and connectors with customisable palettes, sketch options, fonts and text formatting tools. Search for shapes, including in open-source icon libraries. Use our vast libraries of shapes and templates, organised into logical categories, to create a range of diagrams and infographics.
