Lowest cost CPU that is double the performance of Core i5-750?

I have a Core i5-750 and want to upgrade my processor (I'll need a new motherboard, but that's fine).

I only think it's worth upgrading if the performance is doubled.

I wish to spend as little money as possible.

Can someone help me find some of the lowest cost CPUs that doubles the performance compared to my Core i5-750?

I will keep looking myself also, and edit this post if I find anything.

Why do you need double the performance? I've always felt modern CPU's have a hell of a lot of overhead for normal every day use!

I'm still on a Core 2 Duo and the biggest performance upgrade I experienced was from more memory and an SSD.

So just curious where you feel your current i5 is coming up short?

I don't think you'll see ANY performance increase in PC games unless you get a better GPU as its almost totally dependant on that. There was an article a read which involved a budget gaming build vs a top end one and the only determining factor was pretty much the graphics card. Ill try dig it out for you later. As for video encoding, you talking on the fly stuff? My Core 2 duo e6600 can transcode 1080p on the fly with no issues. If it's film making stuff, is it worth the upgrade from what is consider a fairly modern system just to shave a few mins off the encoding time?

Haha. Okay got it. Just modern PC's seem to have so much power relative to the basic functions most of them perform these days. Even smart phones are getting that way! It's quite fascinating.

I've often looked in my bank account and thought about splashing out on an upgrade... but I can never find the justification!

The CPU is a few years old now. I thought (and was hoping) CPUs with double the performance would be around ?100-?125 these days.

Been wanting to upgrade my i5-750 as well but the CPU offerings today haven't exactly been great. SandyBridge was only a 20% improvement afaik, and IvyBridge is about the same or slightly better than SB (but at the cost of higher temps?).

I'll be waiting to see what the next generation is instead.

Hmmmm Farmvilled eh, I'm not any kind of computer wiz, but I've recently come across something myself that might aid your performance in this regard, but I can't be sure if your "issues" with the game are entirely due to your setup and not the game's limitations, coding, et cetera.

I don't play it or browser-based games, but I have made a tweak to my browser for a performance boost in general.

It's called a RAMDISK

What browser do you use?

It essentially utilizes your RAM (not Hard Disk) for, I hope this is correct, a cache for data in whatever browser you choose to employ it, which I guess more or less gives you the incredible access speed boost of RAM (memory) as opposed to spinning discs of your standard model-T hard drive.

Now, if you're rolling with an SSD then I can't say what the benefits will be when compared. But I believe using RAM is the fastest if you have RAM to spare.

Also, if the specific browser is set to utilize your video graphcis to speed up things may also help.. I don't REALLY know much about it all though, just ideas :)

Wow, 8-Core AMD would be nice. Been awhile since I've had anything with AMD in it which I used to be a big fan of.

I know there's an Intel i7 Extreme Edition, not sure what that is like though. I think that's what it's called.

I have the i7 860 (same generation/socket as your i5), and I was bit by the upgrade bug. I could upgrade to a Ivy Bridge i5 or i7, but it's really not worth getting new a CPU + motherboard. My next CPU, I want more power in a smaller power envelope. I built my computer fall '09, so it's been 3+ years, but it's still going strong. The only thing that's changed is an upgrade from GTX 260 to 560 Ti (free) + a newer SSD (since my POS OCZ Vertex failed 4 months in).

I would definitely look at OC'ing, if you can. It's easy, and if successful, it's a cheap alternative that'll make you keep your current setup. I had my setup tweaked to 3.8 - 4.2 GHz, and it ran stable.

Have you tried overclocking your current i5 ? You should be able to gain a considerable amount extra power from that alone, maybe not double but a fair bit

Free upgrades are cheaper than paid ones :)

Well, yeah, the i5 750 is on socket 1156 - if he were to get a significant CPU upgrade, you'd need to change sockets (hence another motherboard). You suggested a switch from an Intel CPU to an AMD CPU, of course that would require a new motherboard. AMD CPU's in their current state are not worth it, if all you're looking for is pure performance.

ive got a core i5-760 and a gtx470 8gigram and a normal hdd and still havent found anything that has slowed this puppy down

also video encoding is lightning fast, and lol if farmbill is lagging ur computer something is seriously wrong
