having a 1.5 year old kid, need some tech advice

I have a 1.5 year old boy and likes to watch cartoons and stuff, but a lot on tv aren't that great. Do you guys recommend any cartoons, episodes, learning that I can play from my computer to tv anytime I want?

The Sprout channel, nick toons, boomerang, even Disney JR all have great programming that will help the young ones learn and be entertained

The old Disney stuff is great. Old episodes of Mickey Mouse/Donald Duck etc. They're mostly public domain and all over Youtube.

Nickjr.com I personally like bubble guppies and Umi Zumi. She is 2 now but been watching those shows for a while. FN hate Dora, but my daughter loves it.............want to shank that character so bad!

I guess this depends on your location.

In the UK, my 1 and 2 year old love the Cbeebies channel. The iPad also has some great educational and story time type apps.

Turn the TV off and let them do something creative. All kids love to watch television but should you let them? It was more work to keep them entertained but I'm much happier that I limited both my son's television when they were younger.

But, if you are going to allow them to watch it, stick to more learning-centric programming. As listed above, NickJr is a good place. Also public television. Check out things like Blues Clues, Dora, Diego, etc..

my daughter loved pbskids.com and disneyjunior.com at that age (and still does) -- she was using the trackpad pretty early and interacting with those learning games.

I would be more inclined to find the classics that you you grew up with. Anything you don't know I suggest you watch a few episodes first and be critical about the content, it is surprising how many shows marketed to kids actually have adult themes in it that you may not like (one cartoon I used to watch in the kids time slot growing up actually had a group sex scene which the TV network didn't know was coming until parents complained after it aired) and a lot of kids shows these days are just outright annoying and portrays kids getting everything they want, only teaches kids how to be annoying ****s who get everything their way.

I presume you can get them on DVD, but there are many now on YouTube.

I preferred building things, riding my bike, and playing games on a Macintosh LC II over TV. I'm glad now I didn't grow up being a couch potato. Limit TV and video games to about one hour (or even half that) a day to kids - it's more important they run around outside (in the backyard).
