Fedora 18 Finally Released

I like it, that looks very smart and professional, I could live with a desktop like that, my grumble with Fedora is it seems to take a lot of effort to achieve the same things that are moderately easy to do in other distros

I know its all a learning thing, once you learn its easy enough, but not having options on right click such as 'Root menu' to open nautilus as root etc got on my nerves fairly quickly

Yeah fedora is a more intermediate distro, whilst ubuntu is aimed at being as beginner-friendly as possible. This, combined with the fact that red hat is completely against including any patent encumbered software makes some aspects of fedora less userfriendly than a distro like ubuntu. But it doesn't take *that* much work to get a setup like that in fedora.

For the font rendering, there's the infinality freetype packages, and they have a fedora repo making them easy to install: http://www.infinalit...ity-repository/ Infinality is also very customizable, and you can set it to have any style font rendering you wish (Windows style, OSX style, Ubuntu style etc...)

For media codecs and such, they can all be found in the rpmfusion repo: http://rpmfusion.org/

and the rest of my setup is just a gnome-shell theme and icons which are easy to install, copy icons to /usr/share/icons, copy themes to /usr/share/themes etc...

The default nautilus in fedora 18 does have some annoying omissions such as no "New Document" in the right click menu (known bug that's fixed upstream in gnome 3.7), but you can get that back by creating an empty text file in the "templates" folder. You can get right click "open in terminal" by installing the nautilus-open-terminal package from the repos, and there's probably a package for right click open as root too (I haven't checked though, but I *think* the beesu package in the repos has some optional nautilus scripts that can put this in the right click menu).

I've been unable to install the current AMD (ATI) drivers for me 7850 so I can then work on setting up Warcraft :(

after updating the kernel from 3.6 something to 3.7 something (via autouptade i guess), it still boots but then i try to start firefox and the whole system freezes (with graphical glitches). that happens only with firefox, i can start other apps normaly...

It's the icedtea-web plugin.

But disable it isn't enough. You must uninstall it. There is a bug in bugzilla.

Thanks for that, I might give F18 another shot in VMWare later today armed with the disable 3D Acceleration info and your tips and see how I get on

I don't mind intermediate as long as it eventually makes sense :)

Last time I checked fedora does not have gksu in its repos, but instead an alternative called beesu. so for fedora [b][font=Consolas, Monaco,]yum install beesu nautilus[/font][font=Consolas, Monaco,]-[/font][font=Consolas, Monaco,]beesu[/font][font=Consolas, Monaco,]-[/font][/b][font=Consolas, Monaco,][b]manager[/b] should do the trick.[/font]

twice now i have booted to the live cd in Virtual box and went to do an install and both times after an hour was only at 30% installed

hoping its not gonna do this when i install it on SSd in a few weeks

Got it installed, but when getting the ATI drivers installed it wont save my dual screen config and just keeps going back to mirror after a reboot - I also read there is an issue with security signing with alot of software atm, like Google Chome won't install

install downloaded packages via the terminal to workaround the gpg key issues: yum localinstall packagename.rpm, it should automatically prompt to import the gpg key (installing packages via double clicking on the rpm should do this too, but the bug you mentioned is a packagekit bug which is why its not working via the gui atm). To skip key check completely you can do: yum --nogpgcheck localinstall packagename.rpm.

And with google chrome its possible to add the chrome repo first and install it right from the repo: http://www.if-not-tr...a-red-hat-rhel/

extends by default for me in f18 (plugged it into my tv via hdmi last night to watch a movie and thats what it did, fresh install of f18). It also seems to remember the setting when I unplug/replag the hdmi cable, but I'm on intel graphics :) I've heard nvidia/ati's proprietary drivers tend to do weird things with dual monitors lol.

Fedora is the best tweak OS that is actually convenient out of the box. I love the concepts behind Slackware and such, but not having a package manager is uuugh... and I just can't be arsed to set up Arch every time I screw it up.

Working fine for me. Here's a screenshot that contains some of the details, but here's the basics of my setup.

Host OS: Ubuntu Linux 12.10 64 bit

VirtualBox 4.2.6 64 bit with exetnsion pack installed.

Used the Gnome Live disc from the Fedora website. Gnome 3 is a bit sluggish in this VM, probably something to do with me using the open source graphics drivers since AMD doesn't support my card on Linux any more, but it is functional enough to play around with it.

Got it done eventually

kept getting a grub error its a known bug so got it fixed

now working on my setup script so i can install F18 on SSD in a few weeks run the script and leave it to set itself up

Can't get it to boot into a GUI on my laptop. Throws up an error just after Plymouth has loaded.

On another note i just used FEDUP to upgrade from 17 to 18 and all went through fine :)
