The notorious action series is getting a reboot by the same developer who brought you Heavenly Sword and Enslaved: Odyssey to the West.


Plot:


DmC: Devil May Cry is an alternate universe, having no connection to the current/canon of the original series while starting from the beginning of Dante's exploits as a demon hunter, and showing his growth into something similar to the classic counterpart.

The story takes place in Limbo City, a contemporary town secretly controlled from the shadows by powerful demons, manipulating humanity through the comforts of life. Living on the fringes of the brainwashed society is Dante, a disenfranchised youth at odds with the demons who constantly hunt him, and have made his life a living hell for as long as he could remember. Over the course of his battles through the twisted streets of Limbo, Dante is contacted by The Order, a rogue group led by his long-lost brother Vergil, hell-bent on exposing the demons to the world and releasing Limbo City from their clutches. However, as The Order's principle reason for recruiting Dante is because he alone possesses a particular gene that can be used to combat the demons, he remains wary of Vergil and questions his intentions. While Dante fights alongside The Order, he will learn of his past and the family he never knew, while coming to grips with the incredible powers that come with being a Son of Sparda.

Despite my initial and immediate hatred for the re-designed Dante, I have to say I grew to like the new direction in which Ninja Theory went. I pre-ordered the game, it arrived on Tuesday this week, and I am SO glad I didn't let the reboot scare me away from trying it. This game is definitely a Devil May Cry game. It is as good, if not better than the all of the previous entries in the series.

The combat is phenomenal. The writing/story is much, much better this time around, and it still has that DMC ridiculousness to it. It is a ton of fun. I highly recommend the game for anyone that likes action games.

So the game's title is redundant?

I don't know if including the acronym's full text can be considered redundant, but I think the idea was to re-brand the series and make "DMC" the new name.

Tried the demo. It was horrible. Don't know why it's getting high reviews. Probably paid for by Crapcom. User review average is at 3.5.

As always, metacritic users scores are something you should take with a huge grain (pile?) of salt. I've read some of the 5 and under user reviews. Most all complain that Dante looks like a "douche" and that the writing story isn't as over-the-top as the originals. To this I say, "So what?" The game still doesn't take itself too seriously in terms of attitude/action. It's not as cheesy as the originals true, but I consider that plus. The story is derivative, but it is sooooooooo much better and told sooooooo much better than the originals. As I said before, the gameplay is exactly the same as the originals, and the combat is as-good too. (I think it's better) All of the user reviews on Metacritic read as if the people never played any of the originals.

Lets be honest. If you're playing a DMC game, you're in it for the combat, not the story. DMC completely succeeds in that regard.

I have the 360 version and I have yet to run into any of the technical issues that people are complaining about. Perhaps it's only happening on the PS3 version?

I wasn't directing any of my statements at you. I was merely commenting on the metacritic user reviews in regards to your post. Much of what they are complaining about is a matter of opinion.

I don't think DMC has cheesier dialog than any of the originals. Don't get me wrong, the dialog IS cheesy. But the originals were pretty bad.

The omission of a lock-on feature didn't and hasn't stopped me from enjoying the game or performing exactly what I want to do. And the fact that you and others complain that it's "too easy" to get SSS ratings only furthers the point that a lock-on feature isn't as necessary as you think it is.

You can switch weapons by holding down a button and can switch targets mid combo without having to do anything other than point the stick in another direction. Those two things alone make combat much smoother than it used to be. And I never had trouble targeting what I wanted to target.

Difficulty is a hugely subjective topic, and as such everyone is going to have wildly different opinions. DMC was never really that hard. Especially when compared to truly hard games like Ninja Gaiden.

This game is a lot of fun, the amount of moves is a bit mental. I would say it's the most enjoyable entry in the series in terms of the plot and combat.

I think they did a good job with Dante this time around. He had the danger of having a personality like Duke Nukem which they've avoided.. thank god.

Also, Limbo looks beautiful. I love the over-saturated, grainy look. Amongst the other things. Graphics are ace.

How is the replayability of this game though? Is it a long story, and if not, is there plenty to keep on replaying it for?

If you like getting high scores and going back and finding everything, then yeah, plenty of replayability.

Well you unlock them with stat points, and it looks like you can remove them if you want, although I have not done so, so I would say yes you can.

Just played the first mission and a bit of the second. Really digging it so far. I have no allegiance to the series, tried out the last one but never beat it, and I recently became a fan of the genre a few years back with the last God Of War and Darksiders. So I cannot compare it to the older games. Just on its own it seems like a damn well made game, and I love the visuals as well.

Not saying this game is bad, but certainly it isn't much like previous DMC games.

DMC1-4 had a sort of combat that no other third person beat-em-ups had. DMC: Devil May Cry itself doesn't have the same essence.

This. This is what people are disliking. The combat is not DMC.

Also I think the user reviews on metacritic can be thrown out. This game is getting so much blind hate for the Dante change, something I think is good and needed for a reboot.

The "professional" reviews can be thrown out as well. Most of them are giving 9-10, yet if you read the reviews, they point out several problems. The score and the review are severely disjointed.

The white-haired Japanimation inspired character never appealed to me, this one, I'm going to give a try.
