About

Why Colorwheel?

Colorwheel is the answer for migrating your system from Windows to? anything else! After the changes to Windows with Windows 8, there were calls for a system that is as easy to use as Windows, without a steep learning curve. Colorwheel is to be as easy to use as the Windows family of operating systems without forcing the user into an uncomfortable interface. After all, it?s your computer, not your software company?s!

Will I still be able to use my programs and files?

Most of the time the answer is: ?Sure!? While there are a few cases of incompatibility between the two, thanks to the years of effort of the folks behind the installed WINE codebase, the majority of Windows programs work just fine on Colorwheel. Meanwhile, some programs like LibreOffice are meant to? and successfully do? replace things like Microsoft Office, while the users files remain intact, and even in their native format if needed.

So how much does Colorwheel really cost?

It really costs nothing except the time to install it! Just download it, and install. If you want free support, go to the forum. The pricing on the support page is for paid phone and email support.

What are the hardware requirements?

Colorwheel was designed to be usable with older-spec computers (2000 and up) and can be run comfortably on a system with as little as 512 MB of RAM and at least 10 GB of hard drive space. On a 1GB RAM machine with a 40 GB hard drive, your computer will run at a great speed. On a bigger desktop or laptop, Colorwheel is blindingly quick.

What is Colorwheel?

Colorwheel is an independent distrubution of GNU/Linux using Ubuntu/Debian as its base. It has underlying Ubuntu 12.04 technology, which is the latest Long-Term-Support (until 2015) version. However, Colorwheel?s been designed to make the change from Windows easier.

How many programs are available for Colorwheel?

Thousands. Literally anything that runs on Ubuntu instantly runs on Colorwheel. Anything that runs on Linux or Debian Linux runs on Colorwheel in a minute or two. And thousands of Windows programs run just fine on Colorwheel.

It's built right on top of Xubuntu 12.04. Just another Xubuntu clone. Plus it's slow. I still had to use "nomodeset" to get to the Live desktop. So it isn't configured very well. If a Windows user tries this, it will be like they are lost in a dark cave without a torch.

Nice review right from the About page, congrats. Just like any other distro, a repeat of Debian/Ubuntu. Seen it, pass on.

Plus I wasn't reviewing it. I was posting about that they released it. If I were to review it, I would put [Review] in the title. But there is nothing to review about this OS. It's just a Xubuntu clone but slower and Thunar doesn't work well. I couldn't even get print screen to work, I had to install gnome-screenshot. That also didn't work well. The first screens I took with it I had to modify in Gimp, just to get them to be viewable. This clone needs shelving or at the very least taken back to the drawing board and reworked from the ground up.

Not saying it is or isn't. If we post every distro update on here, then we might become distrowatch...

Well, I don't post every distro update. But, I will stop posting about anything unless I have an OS issue or am replying to other peoples threads. That alone will keep the peace.

I think it would be a little annoying if someone posted about every distro update, especially when it comes to the obscure ones, but I don't have a problem with people posting about distro releases if they bring something new and interesting to the table. While I agree with your ultimate conclusion that this particular distro isn't very well implemented, thanks for posting about it; I had never heard of it before! We want (or, at least, I want) Neowin's Linux section to be inclusive and informative, even if the other OS sections don't share the same ethos. Thanks for your contribution!

Yeah i like hearing about and trying out new distros too

I tried to go to the homepage at work and got this though :(
