You don't need an SSD to fix a 4 minute boot time. You probably need to reinstall Windows.

Both SSDs you have linked to are very good - I can vouch for the Crucial and the Samsung 830 (not the 840 that you have linked to) as both very good drives.

I'd get the Samsung 830 128GB. The 840 series has worse controllers (or something, I can remember) and the 830 will give you a longer durability.

If anything's wrong then feel free to correct me!

The 830 has faster write speeds than the 840 standard series, worse controllers? No, in fact Samsung's in house SSD controllers are notably the most reliable in the industry.

@OP go for either of those 2, the Crucial has slightly faster writes but the Samsungs are known for their reliability.

Im running windows 8 on a laptop so its not alien to me at all, just wanted to know which os makes better use of the SSD and doesn't thrash the hard drive with loads of writes and reads

I believe Vista, 7, and 8 are all optimized to handle SSDs properly, and I don't believe any 1 does it better than the others. A few services are turned off, and that's about it. You can also turn off the paging file to save some space if you want, since it's useless on a SSD.

Actually, I think 7 and 8 are. I don't think Vista is.

If you are going to spend that much, I would go with one of these:

http://eshop.macsale...ing/SSDEX6G120/

I have purchased two of them, one for a Macbook Pro and the other for a new desktop PC. They are lightning fast in both machines, and MacSales.com customer service is some of the best I have ever dealt with. I would not hesitate to purchase from them again. These drives are also rated faster than the ones you linked, and at about the same price. My opinion is that the build quality and component quality is much better than the drives you linked also.

About the OS to install, I would definitely go with Windows 8. It is faster than Windows 7, and all the "under-the-hood" improvements are worth the learning curve. I am not a huge fan of the "Metro" interface, but I am playing with it here and there, and it isn't so bad once you get used to it. That being said, when I installed Windows 8 I immediately purchased Start8 for $5, and it immediately gave me back the interface I am used to working with. All said and done, Windows 8 is a definite improvement over Windows 7, as long as you get Start8 or one of the free alternatives (Start8 is far better than any of the free ones IMO), and it lets you "future-proof" yourself by being able to play with and get used to the "Metro" interface on your own free time.

I hope this info helps!

Tim
